Current Research:

Working on a project titled “Synthesis of Liquid Crystals ” at Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, India under the guidance of Prof. Sandeep Kumar , as a Visiting Student Fellow under the Visiting Student Program. Under this title, presently am carrying out different reactions like coupling reactions, alkylation, hydrogenation and also synthesis of many chiral compounds. These compounds are purified by Column Chromatography and characterized by different techniques like UV, IR, NMR, X-ray studies. The synthesized compounds are then studied for their different electrical properties. The main aim of my work is to synthesize some liquid crystalline compounds which exhibit blue phase over a wide range and preferably at room temperature.

Additional Qualifications:

Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, India

Skills Developed and Equipments Handled:

Computer skills – Basics in Computer Application and use of softwares like Chemsketch. Spectroscopy methods involving UV. IR, NMR, Mass spectroscopy, Microwave and X-ray methods have been taught as part of syllabus at N.I.T.K. Also hands on experience in handling Cyclic voltammetry, Chromatographic techniques, TLC, POM, DSC.

Instruments Handled during summer project at AstraZeneca India Pvt Ltd:

TLC, HPLC, IR, LCMS, UPLC, Miniclave for Hydrogenation, AAS and Rotavapor.

Thesis towards Masters Degree:

Title : “Synthesis, characterisation and antimicrobial studies of some Nitrogen containing Heterocyclic compounds ”. Description: The project under the guidance of Dr. Arun M. Isloor involved literature survey followed by synthesis of various nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds and their derivatives. These compounds were characterised using techniques such as IR, NMR, MS, TLC, Chromatography. Once confirmed these compounds were analysed for their antimicrobial activities against various micro organisms using a standard drug and then the results obtained were analysed and compared with that of the standard drug.

Projects Accomplished:

• Undertaken a summer project at AstraZeneca India Pvt Ltd , Bangalore, India in the PR&D section titled “Multistage Synthesis of Substituted Lactum ” in first year of M.Sc from May 2009 – July 2009. Description: In the first stage SNAr reaction and only ortho substitution for Substituted Nitrobenzene was carried out to get Nitro carboxylic acid .In the Second stage Reduction of Nitro group to Amino group was carried out to get Amino carboxylic acid. In the third stage Cyclisation of Amino carboxylic acid was carried out to get Substituted Lactum. For all the three stages reactions where monitored using TLC, HPLC and LCMS and products where confirmed by C-13 and Proton NMR.

• Undertaken a project on “Biofertilizers” during B.Sc from December 1 st - March 10 th 2007. Description: The project involved the types and analysis of various biofertilizers and their effect on yield and resistance in plants. Also comparison of biofertilizers and Chemical fertilizers was carried out and their effect on soil and plants was studied.

• Undertaken a project on “Protein Analysis and Homology Modelling” as a part of Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics during B.Sc from December 1 st – March 15 th 2006. Description: Analysis of proteins particularly rennin and its primary, secondary structure using GOR, nn Predict, SOPMA and tertiary structure using Swiss Prot Server and prediction of possible tertiary structure using Swiss Model. And the structure was visualized using Swiss PDB Viewer.
