Successful charities should pay well enough to attract excellent executives The issue of charity chief executive pay will remain difficult until the sector explains itself, says Borge Andreassen Following last summer's focus on senior executive pay in the charity sector, NCVO has recently published its findings in the Report of the Inquiry into Charity Senior Executive Pay. It is commendable that NCVO has tackled this difficult issue head on, and the report makes a number of sensible recommendations, particularly in relation to increased transparency around senior executive pay and how charities can report their practice. Reading some of the comments and opinions about charity pay, it is evident that many people still think charities should largely be run by volunteers, a view reinforced in a recent New Philanthropy Capital publication Mind the Gap: What the public thinks about charities. It shows that 16% of the public believe charity chief executives should not be paid at all. The reality is that most charities are wholly run by volunteers. According to the NCVO report fewer than one in 10 charities employ any staff at all, and only 1% of charity staff are paid more than £60,000. http://www.theguardian.com/voluntary-sector-network/2014/may/13/successful-charities- should-pay-executives-well

Events

Reminder: Preston Social Media Surgery - 20 May 2014 Are you a community organisation or voluntary group that would like to learn more about how Social Media can help you? If you are interested in learning more about how Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, online sharing and storytelling can benefit your organisation or community group, then this is definitely for you. Preston Social Media Surgery is a bi-monthly event which takes place at Disability Equality North West on Church Street. This month’s event will be on the 20th May at 5.30pm and lasts until 7.30pm. The concept is simple. Lancashire based Digital Training Company DigiEnable have teamed up with other Social Media practitioners from Preston and surrounding areas to provide a space in which you can bring your questions and put them to Social Media Experts. You will then have up to two hours to sit with someone and work through any questions, issues or concerns that you have. We will not stand at the front of the room and lecture you, we will not set an agenda for what can be discussed; this is your opportunity to raise issues specific to your organisation and together find a solution. The Preston Social Media Surgery is for charities, community groups, residents groups and anyone with an interest in making Preston’s third sector a stronger and more digitally engaged community. The surgeons are experienced, enthusiastic, and will not baffle you with jargon and terminology. Their role is to make Social Media easy to understand and accessible to everyone. The initiative is supported by Disability Equality North West who provide the venue and WI-FI. Places are free but limited, so if you would like to come along please let the organisers know by registering on the Social Media Surgery website http://socialmediasurgery.com/surgeries/preston Any questions or problems, email [email protected]

Public Notices

Tories vote to stick with colourful leader Preston’s Geoff Driver has survived a rumoured rebellion to be re-elected as leader of the Conservatives on Lancashire County Council. The authority’s 35-strong Tory group voted to back the colourful politician despite a turbulent year in opposition at County Hall. Coun Driver got the go-ahead to continue in the top job at the group’s annual general meeting on Thursday. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/local/tories-vote-to-stick-with-colourful-leader-1-6608746

Shining new sculpture installed at Ribble Link A statue to replace the controversial ‘Ribble Piddler’ has finally been installed. The £30,000 boat sculpture was driven to Preston from Derbyshire on the back of a lorry, before being unloaded at the Ribble Link. And waterway campaigners now hope the new statue will be even more iconic than the previous piece of public art. Cliff Fazackerley, chairman of the Ribble Link Trust, said: “We are thrilled, we are over the moon". http://www.lep.co.uk/news/shining-new-sculpture-installed-at-ribble-link-1-660637 1

Chorley: Calls to reopen ‘vital’ information centre Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle has called on Lancashire County Council to reconsider its decision to close a bus station information centre. LCC has withdrawn its funding for the information centre at Chorley bus station, which costs around £14,000 a year to run, as part of a cost cutting drive. Information will now be available to passengers from the station manager’s office on the concourse. But Chorley MP Mr Hoyle has hit out at the move and claims Chorley has been singled out after centres in Preston and Burnley have remained open. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/traffic-travel/calls-to-reopen-vital-information-centre-1-6610596

Mind: Workfare and Volunteering Support for people with mental health problems who want to return to work is vital. As part of our broader campaigning on benefits and welfare reform we want to see individuals treated with understanding and respect. Mind, the national charity, does not have, has never had and will never have any coerced volunteer placements. As a charity, we depend upon volunteers to help us continue our work. Mind has a volunteering policy that states that volunteer roles should never be used in place of paid roles. Volunteers are usually recruited on a time limited basis to work on specific projects. Local Minds are independent charities, so we do not have immediate access to information about their staff and volunteers. We have written to all local Minds to ask that, if they are involved in any Workfare schemes, they withdraw from them immediately. At present, we have not been notified of any local Minds involved in such schemes. We have told managers in our charity shops to check the status of their volunteers and end any placements that are not in line with our position. http://www.mind.org.uk/news-campaigns/campaigns/benefits/welfare-reform-and-employment/

Stop the corporatisation of charities We musn't lose our heart in the bid to quash public perceptions of us as 'amateur do-gooders', says Gemma Borwick The charitable sector exists for the public good, yet it is a billion pound "industry" with ambitious goals and agendas. Our far-reaching sector, not public or private, has undergone significant change over the last 30 years as state reliance on charities has become greater and the operating environment more competitive. Richard Cooper believes the term "voluntary" still conjures up visions of "well-meaning amateurs attempting to do good". This old, damaging stereotype is just the tip of the iceberg. When the public were asked about their perceptions of charities providing specific services, only 7% thought they were the best providers of "professional" services over the private and public sectors. This rose to 47% when asked which sector is best at providing a "caring approach". Bad news. http://www.theguardian.com/voluntary-sector-network/2014/may/12/stop-corporatisation-of- charities

What is cloud computing? (Video) There has been a lot of talk about charities moving to the cloud, but what does it really mean? Appeals

Preston: Appeal launched for new school minibus Youngsters from a school for deaf children have launched an appeal for a new minibus. Following a spate of vandalism, Royal Cross Primary School was overwhelmed with offers of help from the community to keep their bus on the road. The school is aiming to raise about £40,000 over the next 12 months, and will be hosting events to help raise the money. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/education/appeal-launched-for-new-school-minibus-1-6617489

Health

Mental Health Awareness Week 2014: Nearly a quarter of women feel anxious all or a lot of the time The figures, released by the Mental Health Foundation, showed that one in five people suffer from constant anxiety in everyday life Nearly a quarter of women suffer from constant anxiety, according to new figures on the state of the UK’s mental health. 22 per cent of women feel anxious a lot or all of the time, compared to 15 per cent of men. Worries concerning financial issues, the welfare of children and loved ones, and work issues are the main factors contributing to high levels of anxiety in everyday life, the Mental Health Foundation revealed in its Living With Anxiety report. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/mental-health- awareness-week-2014-nearly-a-quarter-of-women-feel-anxious-all-or-a-lot-of-the-time- 9354125.html

UK coeliac disease diagnoses 'up fourfold' over 20 years The number of people diagnosed in the UK with coeliac disease has increased fourfold between 1990 and 2011, a study suggests. The autoimmune disease, triggered by a reaction to gluten - found in wheat, barley and rye - can cause severe symptoms. It is treated by following a lifelong gluten-free diet. Experts say they believe the increase is due to better diagnosis, rather than more people developing the condition. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-27339919

Anti-depressants 'could slow onset of Alzheimer's disease' An anti-depressant drug could be used to slow the onset of Alzheimer's disease, say scientists in the US. Research into 23 people, and transgenic mice, found citalopram hampered a protein which helps to build destructive plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Scientists said they hoped the study could help prevent the disease. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-27409135

End-of-life care 'deeply concerning' The care given to people dying in hospital is "deeply concerning", according to doctors who have carried out a review of standards in England. The audit found only a fifth of hospitals provided specialist end-of-life care seven days a week - 10 years after this was recommended. Communication was also particularly poor, the joint Royal of Physicians and Marie Curie review said. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-27406258
