MUSIC PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Dave Carbone, Bluffton, SC Mr. David Carbone has over 30 years of experience in the marching and pageantry arts as a performer, educator, designer, and adjudicator. His teaching experience includes a 23-year career as a band director at the high school and collegiate levels in the states of Florida, Ohio, and Texas. He holds a Master’s Degree in Music/Wind Band Conducting from the University of South Florida, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Miami. As a Director of Bands at the high school level, Mr. Carbone’s marching bands in Ohio and Texas advanced to (BOA) Regional and Super Regional Championship Finals competitions 15 times. While at Bellbrook HS in Ohio, Mr. Carbone led the Marching Eagles to five consecutive BOA Semifinals appearances and two BOA Grand National Class Championships. Mr. Carbone has extensive involvement with Drum Corps International. He was a member of and/or instructor for ten DCI World Championship Finalist Drum Corps, including membership in the renown DCI World Champion Star of Drum and Bugle Corps. As an adjudicator for DCI, Mr. Carbone has been invited to judge the DCI World Championships multiple times. Outside of his busy judging schedule, Mr. Carbone enjoys serving as a guest conductor, program coordinator, designer, and consultant for band programs across the country. He resides in the Hilton Head Island area of South Carolina where he lives with his wife Carrie and two children Beckett and Jordan.

Wayne Dillon, Crawford, NJ Wayne Dillon holds a Masters degree in Jazz performance/pedagogy from The University of Miami (Fl). He completed both his Honors Fine Arts and Education degrees from York University in Toronto Canada. Wayne is currently the Director of Bands at the Frank J. Ciccarell Academy in Elizabeth N.J. His teaching responsibilities include Music Technology, along with Jazz, Symphonic and . The Elizabeth HS Symphonic and Jazz bands have consistently earned superior ratings during Wayne’s tenure. The Marching Band was awarded three consecutive State Championships from 2005-2007. In 2011,2012 and 2013 the marching band was named USSBA State and National Champions in group VA. Wayne is an active adjudicator for Drum Corps International, Bands of America and Winter Guard International. He has judged the prestigious National championships for all three organizations over the past thirty years. He is currently a judge liaison for DCI, responsible for judge assignments and training. He is currently an educational clinician for the Conn-Selmer music Corporation. Wayne has served as the brass caption head with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps from Boston Mass. He has also worked on the music staff of the ten- time world champion Cadets of Bergen County NJ, serving as the music supervisor in 2002. In 2010-2011, Wayne served as a staff member for the US Army All American Marching Band. As a performer, Wayne has played with The Studio Jazz band and the Art Blakey jazz ensemble from the University of Miami. Outside of school, Wayne has performed and recorded with; Jeff Healey, Albert Collins, KC and the Sunshine Band, Al Chez (from the Dave Letterman band), Steve Brosky, The Meteors, Jay and the Technics, Don Mayer and The Hamilton Philharmonic. He currently plays with Tower Suite. In 2008, Wayne was awarded the State of New Jersey Governor’s teacher recognition award for his work with the music program at Elizabeth High School.

Scott Koter, Delmont, PA Scott Koter retired as assistant superintendent for the Kiski Area SD in 2016 and previ- ously served as a Page 1 of 6 principal and band director in the same district beginning in 1982. His ensembles received numerous honors including appearances at the Midwest Clinic, MENC, IAJE and PMEA conventions and captured numerous state and BOA regional titles while being named BOA Grand National finalist seven times and a Grand National class champion two times. Scott received citations for teaching excellence from PMEA, NBA, IAJE as well as Duquesne University, St.Vincent College and California University of PA. During Scott’s teaching and administrative tenure, Kiski HS was named as a Grammy Signature School and the district was named as a Best Community in Music by the NAMM Foundation. Scott presently serves as program coordinator for the 2018 DCI World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard of Santa Clara, CA. and previously served in that same role for The Cavaliers of Rosemont, IL winning five DCI world championships during that time. He also serves as a creative consultant for Fannin Musical Productions. Scott was inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame in 2015.

Steve Meyer, Flagstaff, AZ Stephen Meyer is currently the director of bands and assistant professor of music at Northern Arizona University. He previously served on the faculties of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and the University of South Carolina. As director of bands at Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, the Clear Creek Wind Ensemble was a featured performer at the 2013 Midwest Clinic, was a three-time National Winner in the National Wind Band Honors project, a two-time national finalist for American Prize in Wind Ensemble Performance, and the Grand Champion of the 2013 Dallas Wind Symphony Invitational.

Prior to Clear Creek, Dr. Meyer taught at Harrison High School in Cobb County, Georgia, where he assisted with performances at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and the University of Georgia. As co-director of the marching band, the ensemble was a consistent Bands of America Regional and Super-Regional Finalist, a Bands of America Grand National Finalist in 2007, and a featured ensemble in the 2009 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Dr. Meyer graduated magna cum laude from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a bachelor of music education degree and earned both a master's and a doctorate from the University of Michigan. He is the author of Rehearsing the High School Band and Rehearsing the Middle School Band, published by Meredith Music/Hal Leonard.

John Phillips, Cape Coral, FL In demand as a clinician and consultant across the globe, John Phillips shares his unique brand of music education through workshops with State and Provincial Music Educators’ Associations, the National Association for Music Education, and as a presenter at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous initiatives with Music For All including the National Concert Festival, the annual Summer Symposium, and the Bands of America Grand Nationals.

Phillips is the Artistic Coordinator for the Southwest Florida Symphony in Fort Myers. Prior to moving to the U.S., he conducted ensembles and taught music education classes at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto, and York University.

Since 2000 he has served as judge administrator for Drum Corps International and was inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame class of 2015. Mr. Phillips also serves in the capacity as Senior Advisor for Music Mentors International leading professional development programs to promote critical and creative thinking.

Page 2 of 6 Caleb Rothe, Fontana, CA Caleb Rothe is the Percussion Education Coordinator for Winter Guard International (WGI) Sport of the Arts. He has previously served as a program director, arranger, and instructor for numerous programs including Ayala H.S., Pulse Percussion, Upland H.S., Rancho Cucamonga H.S., and Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Rothe is an internationally sought-after adjudicator and clinician, and has written for numerous groups across the and Japan. Caleb has served as an adjudicator at events across the United States, Europe, and Asia. His judging experience includes work with WGI Sport of the Arts, Drum Corps International (DCI), Bands of America (BOA), the Malaysia World Band Competition, and a number of local and regional marching arts organizations and events across the United States. On the field, his groups have previously been named DCI Division III World Champions, BOA Grand National Finalists, BOA Regional Champions, and Western Band Association Finalists 23 times. In indoor competition, his ensembles have collectively won nine WGI World Championship medals and have been WGI World Championship Finalists 25 times. Mr. Rothe received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in the spring of 2003 and his teaching credential from the University of Redlands in the winter of 2007. After teaching math and percussion, and serving as mathematics department chair for many years, he now serves as an Instructional Technology Coach for the Redlands Unified School District. Caleb lives with his wife Kelly and sons Cameron and Carter in Fontana, California.

Dale Warren, Fayetteville, AR W. Dale Warren is Senior Wind Band Conductor and Professor of Music in the University of Arkansas’ Department of Music. Professor Warren’s primary responsibility is conducting the UA Wind Symphony. He also teaches music education courses and is actively engaged in the Graduate Instrumental Conducting Program. Professor Warren is also the director of the highly successful UA Summer Music Camps. Under Professor Warren’s direction, the UA Razorback Marching Band (1991-2000) and UA Wind Symphony have seen great success. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Austin Peay State University and a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Kentucky. He also served on the music department faculty as Associate Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Kentucky from 1986-1991. Professor Warren taught at Kentucky high schools Bremen and North Hardin from 1980-1986, where his bands saw great success. He has also guest conducted all- district, all-region, and all-state honor bands, as well as university bands in 35 states. Professor Warren is a computer clinician/designer for Advantage Showare, Inc. and Arrangers' Publishing Company. For 20 years he served as an adjudicator/clinician for Musicfest Orlando. During Mr. Warren’s affiliation with Music for All/Bands of America (BOA), he served as a member of the Educational Advisory Board and for the past 30 years as an adjudicator and chief judge. In addition to serving as chairman of the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Shield Award Committee, Mr. Warren is a John Philip Sousa Foundation Board Member, and a Past President of the Southeastern Conference Band Directors Association. Professor Warren's affiliations include: National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, Music Educators National Conference, College Band Directors National Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Conductors Guild, Arkansas Bandmasters Association, Arkansas Music Educators Association, Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

Jay Webb, Avon, IN Jay Webb has been the Director of Bands at Avon High School in Avon Indiana since 1993. In that time the Avon Band has consistently been at the forefront of the scholastic pageantry activity. Their many successes include multiple state and national championships, including the Bands of America Grand National Championship in 2008,09, and 10. The Avon Marching Black and Gold was awarded the Sudler Shield in 2007. Avon is recognized as one of the premier band programs in the United States. All aspects of the Band program strive to achieve at the highest national levels with participation in Winter guard International, Bands of America, and Indiana State School Music Association events. Mr. Webb brings a variety of experiences ranging from performances with the award-winning drumline of the Bridge men Drum and Bugle Corps from Bayonne New Jersey to the Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Webb is a

(B.M.E. 1991) Mr. Webb has memberships that include Pi Kappa Lambda, Indiana Bandmasters Association, Indiana Music Educators Association, and as the founding member of Indiana Percussion Association, Currently Mr. Webb serves on the Percussion Task Force for Winter guard International and as an adjudicator for Drum Corps International. Mr. Webb was inducted into the Winter guard International Hall of Fame in 2008. Jay shares his passion for life and music with his Boston Terrier, Ellie and his French Bulldog, Howard.

VISUAL PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Lee Carlson, Palm Springs, CA Lee Carlson is an adjudicator for Bands of America, Drum Corps International, and winter guard circuits throughout the United States. He was Visual Caption Head for DCI for three years and served an additional two years as one of the Visual Judge Liaisons. Currently, Carlson is serving as the Judge Recruiting and Training coordinator for DCI. He has been on panels for the British Marching Band Championship, Drum Corps Japan, Marching Band Japan, and both winter guard and marching band shows in the Netherlands. He has been drill designer for the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band for the last 31 years. Carlson lives in Palm Springs, California, where he owns and operates his pottery studio.

Bruce Jones, Fleming Island, FL Bruce Jones is currently living in Fleming Island, Florida. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in education, Mr. Jones has been involved in the pageantry arts for 35 years. His experience includes being a performer, designer, instructor, and consultant for many national programs in drum and bugle corps, marching bands and winter color guard, many of which have been finalists in Drum Corps International (DCI), , Bands of America (BOA), and Winter Guard International (WGI) as well as state champions and state finalists. He has also been involved as a clinician at many national marching band and color guard workshops throughout the United States. Bruce’s judging background spans 25 years in which he has been involved in judging local, regional, and international events. He has adjudicated in such prestigious events as DCI Championships, Drum Corps Japan Championships, Drum Corps Europe Championships, Drum Corps Indonesia, and BOA along with numerous state and regional marching band, color guard, and percussion competitions across the United States.

Greg Llacer, Boxborough, MA Greg Llacer has been a pageantry arts adjudicator and clinician since 1989, judging field show, winter guard, and percussion competitions nationwide, most recently affiliated with regional/state organizations in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, and Texas. He has taught color guards and has written field show drill for large high school and university programs such as Vista and Poway High Schools in north San Diego County, California, San Diego State University, and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He also has served in leadership roles across the pageantry arts, as a member of the Board of Directors for the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (from which he is recipient of the Order of Excellence and Hall of Fame honors), Chief Judge for the Texas Color Guard Circuit Judges Association, and member of the Field Adjudication Steering Committee for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association.

Greg lives in the New England town of Boxborough, MA and works at Harvard University where he is the director of undergraduate research and prestigious academic fellowships, as well as the global director for the Amgen Foundation's undergraduate research programs in biotechnology across 24 premier universities in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. He is also member of the Dean of Harvard College's Senior Staff.

Kyle Miller, Van Nuys, CA Currently teaching Language Arts in Las Vegas, Nevada, Kyle Miller’s pageantry experience begins with high school marching band. While studying music at University of Iowa, he began teaching and designing. This progressed into judging, consulting, and teaching nationwide. He continues to place high value on his experience and opportunities to judge Bands of America / Music For All events. Also evaluating DCI and WGI programs, he works to develop a broad range of pageantry arts in addition to his everyday position as a classroom educator. He has served as Judge Liaison and Chief Judge in Illinois and Texas and is fortunate to have additional experience judging internationally, evaluating performances in Europe, Thailand, and Japan.

Jim Sturgeon, Henderson, NV Jim Sturgeon has enjoyed over 25 year’s in the pageantry arts. He serves as an adjudicator for Drum Corps International, Bands of America, Winter Guard International, Gulf Coast Judges Association, Florida Federation of Color Guard, and various marching band and color guard circuits. Jim was a member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps and Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard. He has served as a designer/clinician for the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps as well as for several high school band and color guard programs. Outside of the pageantry arts, Jim has spent his professional career in the field of human resources. He possesses a BSBA and an MBA in business from the University of Louisville. Currently, Jim is the Vice President of People Services for HealthCare Partners of Nevada, a DaVita Medical Group company. Jim resides in Henderson, NV.

Michael Turner, San Francisco, CA Mr. Michael Turner began his career in the pageantry arts as a member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. Trained in ballet, jazz and modern dance, Michael was one of the early color guard pioneers to introduce dance and movement to the marching arena. While in Madison, Mr. Turner performed with Kanopy Dance Theatre, PresenTense, Children’s Theatre of Madison, Madison Opera, and Ballet Madison. With such a diversified background, Michael developed an artistically strong and original teaching style. For 18 years, Michael worked with the two-time World Champion Madison Scouts, serving as Color Guard Choreographer and Visual Coordinator. In the San Francisco Bay Area, Mr. Turner served as Dance Master and Choreographer for the six-time World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Turner has judged for Winter Guard International (WGI), Bands of America (BOA), and Drum Corps International (DCI), and continues freelance judging for marching bands, drum corps, and color guard throughout the world.

CHIEF JUDGE Gary Markham, Dallas, GA Mr. Gary Markham is recently retired Supervisor of Instrumental Music for the Cobb County School District in Marietta, GA. He is the former Director of Bands at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax County, VA. He has over four decades of experience in music education, with 25 years as a high school band director and 20 years as a music supervisor. He currently serves internationally as clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator, and consultant. The Cobb County Music program has been named one of the “BEST Communities for Music Education in America, 12 times. Mr. Markham received his B. S. degree from Mansfield State University, M. Ed. degree from Penn State University, and studied for Ph. D. (ABD) in conducting and music supervision at George Mason University with Tony Maiello and Arnald Gabriel. His leadership experience includes membership on several state and national music education executive boards including the Mid-West Clinic Advisory Committee. He is currently the Senior Education Consultant and Chief Judge for Bands of America (BOA), Executive Director of the Music Administration Collaborative, and Judge Education Director for Drum Corps International (DCI). He is a 1992 recipient of Page 5 of 6 the John Philip Sousa Foundation's "Sudler Order of Merit" and the Robinson Symphonic Band is the 1992 recipient of the "Sudler Flag of Honor.” In 2006, Mr. Markham was presented with the Georgia Music Educators Administrative Leadership award and was inducted into the BOA “Hall of Fame.” In 2007, Mr. Markham received the DCI & Coltrin & Associates “Excellence in Music Education Award.” In 2009, NAfME presented the first “Excellence in Marching Music Education” to Mr. Markham for serving as chairman of the Blue Ribbon Commission for writing National Standards and a lifetime devoted to marching music excellence.

Richard Saucedo, Fishers, IN Richard L. Saucedo retired in 2013 as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Chairman at the William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts at Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana. During his 31-year tenure, Carmel bands received numerous state, regional and national honors in the areas of concert band, jazz band and marching band. Under his direction, Carmel’s Wind Symphony I performed at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival three times (1992, 1999, and 2004) and was named the Indiana State Champion Concert Band under his baton most recently in 2013. The group also performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago during December of 2005. Carmel Jazz Ensembles won numerous awards at jazz festivals in Indiana and throughout the Midwest. The Carmel Marching Greyhounds finished in the top ten at the Bands of America Grand National Championship for 17 years under Saucedo and were named BOA National Champions in the fall of 2005 and again in 2012. The Marching Band was the Indiana Class A State Champion four times. The Indiana Bandmasters Association named Mr. Saucedo Indiana’s “Bandmaster of the Year” for 1998-99 and he was named the “Outstanding Music Educator” in the state of Indiana for 2010 by the Indiana Music Educators Association. Mr. Saucedo’s accomplishments have been highlighted in articles by HALFTIME and SCHOOL BAND AND ORCHESTRA Magazines. He was inducted into the Music for All “Hall of Fame” in 2015.
