Colavita USA Expands Menu of Italian Specialty Products Colavita Acquires US Distribution Rights for Leading Italian Tomato and Rice Brands Edison, NJ (January 10, 2013) -- Colavita, credited with introducing Americans to genuine Italian extra virgin olive oil, is bringing more authentic Italian ingredients to home and professional kitchens. Cirio, a leading brand of preserved tomatoes, and Riso Scotti, the top producer of Arborio rice in Italy, are now available through Colavita USA for retail and foodservice accounts. “We are honored to market the Cirio and Riso Scotti brands in the US,” said Giovanni Colavita, CEO of Colavita USA. “Italian cuisine is our heritage. It is also the foundation for a healthy lifestyle, as research into the Mediterranean diet has established. We are committed to bringing the best of Italy so that Americans can enjoy the unparalleled taste, quality, and yes, romance, of our great tradition.” Cirio is a leading tomato brand in Italy, where preserved tomatoes are integral to the cuisine. Prized by chefs worldwide, the richness, sweetness, and consistency of Italian tomatoes set the benchmark for taste and are ideal for sauces. Company lore credits founder Francesco Cirio with the creation of the Margherita Pizza, which he dedicated to the Italian queen in 1912. (The pizza was designed to incorporate the three colors of Italy: tomatoes for red, basil for green, and mozzarella cheese for white.) Cirio joined Conserve Italia, one of the largest agricultural cooperatives in Europe, in 2004. “Francesco Cirio began preserving tomatoes in cans in 1856 and we are proud to continue his legacy here in the US,” said Colavita. “We have exciting initiatives planned for 2013 to carry out his tradition of quality and innovation.” All Cirio products are made with 100% Italian tomatoes, grown in highly fertile volcanic soil from seeds cultivated by Conserve Italia. Cirio tomatoes are harvested and processed the same day and available in peeled and chopped varieties for retail and foodservice. Colavita also carries the Cirio line of jarred Italian beans. In addition, Colavita has assumed US distribution for Riso Scotti products, the leading rice producer in Italy. Since 1860, the Scotti family has produced the finest quality rice harvested from their farms in the heart of Italy’s Po Valley. Quality and innovation are hallmarks of the brand. Riso Scotti was the first Italian rice factory to produce and sell packaged rice and later pioneered the use of vacuum packaging. Riso Scotti is the #1 producer of Arborio rice in Italy and a top seller in more than 70 countries. “We are very excited to extend the reach of Scotti rice products to the US market,” said Colavita. “Like our company, Riso Scotti is family-owned and shares our commitment to supplying the best Italian ingredients to home and professional kitchens.” “Riso Scotti offers authentic Italian foods for those who prefer gluten-free options,” Colavita continued. “We also look forward to introducing new Riso Scotti products to serve the needs of time-pressed US consumers.” Riso Scotti products are available for retail and foodservice. Retail offerings include easy-to- prepare Riso Scotti Risotto, available in original Milanese and Asparagus, Porcini, and Truffle flavored varieties, and vacuum packed Arborio and Carnaroli rice (known as the “King” of Italian rice for its high starch content). Riso Scotti’s foodservice lineup includes vacuum packed Arborio and Carnaroli rice as well as Riso Scotti’s famed 2-minute risotto in traditional and flavored varieties in portioned packages. Colavita also manages distribution for San Benedetto, Italy’s #1 brand of bottled water, to retail accounts, restaurants, and other foodservice outlets. Distinguished among mineral waters for its superior natural taste, San Benedetto was the first Italian company to bottle water in recyclable PET bottles. The San Benedetto line includes natural and sparkling waters as well as flavored teas and Bellini bases. Colavita continues to import and distribute the legendary Perugina brand of Italian chocolates, including the iconic Baci. Earlier this year, Colavita introduced Baci White, created by master chocolatiers at Perugina's world renowned Scuola del Cioccolato in Perugia, Italy to mark the 90th anniversary of this celebrated confection. Like the original, Baci White is filled with gianduia, a sensuous whipped chocolate filling blended with finely chopped hazelnuts, crowned by a crunchy whole hazelnut and then enrobed in a smooth, vanilla scented layer of white chocolate. The Baci White line consists of 5-oz bags, 8-oz and 1-lb pound boxes, and the Baci White Purse, a uniquely designed package that holds three Baci White confections. Rounding out Colavita’s portfolio are specialty food products from leading Italian tastemakers, including New York City’s famed Patsy’s Restaurant, Tony Tantillo, known for his “Fresh Grocer” TV segments, and Rachael Ray, the popular TV host and cookbook author. Recent additions include coffee and espresso from Antica Tostatura Triestina, named a “must-have” brand by Martha Stewart on her daytime television show, and Greci e Folzani prosciutto. Products distributed by Colavita are available in supermarkets, specialty food stores, and warehouse clubs throughout the US as well as online at www.ColavitaStore.com.
