Bilson 3rd £10 Alastair Rapley Editors Page I am pleased to report that the recent heatwave was a direct result of my mother’s purchase of a 200 Litre water butt! Since then the whole county has been without any measurable rainfall! Along with the heatwave came an unfortunate crimewave. Ecton was not alone in being targeted, on Friday 16th July, Cogenhoe also had 6 properties broken into and while crime in the village is thankfully low, this is a sharp reminder that we are not immune to “visitors” breaking the tranquility. While its impossible to stop a determined burglar, we can make life much more difficult for them. For advice from the Police visit this link https://www.police.uk/crime-prevention-advice/burglary/ Please, Please, Please I would urge you always to report any crime. The funding the Police get is directly linked to crime rates, therefore if we don't report it then there is zero chance of increased funds to help catch the thieves. Saturday 27th August sees the return of the Irish band ‘Pugwash’ to Three Horseshoes, if you missed them last time, get along to see them and have a whole lot of fun.

Ecton Golden Oldies Our next get together is on the 19th August when we are going to the garden centre at Burton Latimer. Pat will be in touch to check if you are coming. Forthcoming events include a talk by the organisers of the Air Ambulance and lunch with a magician! Watch this space. Sadly one of our friends, Molly Labrum has died, our thoughts are with her family and friends. Molly joined the EGO's at the very beginning and supported all of the events. She loved to meet up with everyone and she was always smiling. She will be missed. Anyone who is over 60 is very welcome to come and join us. Any questions, please ring Pat on 01604 402582.

Ecton Bowls Club Our recent Open Evenings were something of a disappointment as only one person came along. However, he did join the Club and as a result we obtained Home and Away fixtures with Abingdon Bowls Club, These two matches were played in good spirits with Ecton winning at Home and only narrowly losing Away. We hope that our connection with Abingdon will continue in the future.

As a travelling preacher Jesus often relied on the hospitality and generosity of others, many of whom welcomed him openly and shared their home and food with him. Our homes naturally mean a great deal to us, offering us a place to call our own and giving us a sense of safety and comfort, not only to ourselves but to family, friends and visitors. As part of my role as Rector I often visit people, for a variety of reasons, in their homes and I am grateful that everyone has made me so welcome in the short while I have been with you. At a recent Sunday Service I gave out copies of the House Blessing below, one for the homes of those at the service and one to give away to a neighbour. Since then I have heard some lovely stories about how the blessings have been shared and thought it may be nice to offer you the same blessing here Bless this house, O Lord we pray, make it safe by night and day; Bless the walls and chimney tall, let thy peace lie over all. Bless the doors and windows bright, letting in God's heavenly light; Bless the people who dwell within, keep them safe and free from sin. As you may know we have been living in the Rectory for about 4 months now and feel very settled in what is a beautiful house and garden. Before we moved in the Diocese did a lot of work on the Rectory and parishioners were involved with tidying the garden and house ready for our arrival. We have now got the house feeling like home and the garden is coming round well. Therefore, on Saturday 13th August 2-5pm we would like to invite you to an Open House and Garden afternoon. There will be Teas and Coffees, Cakes, Raffle and Bring and Buy Stall. Money raised will be given to the three churches in the Benefice. We hope for a dry day and look forward to seeing you and sharing our home and garden with you. Yours in Christ, Open House and Garden From Jackie The Rectory Revd. Theatre production of “Where’s The Missus?!!!” at Village Hall. It will be showing in the afternoon and evening Saturday 26th November. The play has been written by Valerie Sweeney, who originally comes from Kettering.

Tickets available from Liam 07973697872 or email [email protected] My first month in office I have now been in the role as your Police and Crime Commissioner for just over a month, and so far have found it to be an extremely fast-paced, challenging yet exciting job. It has been fascinating to learn more about the great work undertake each and every day. No police officer can ever predict what will happen when they go on shift and it has been a privilege to see at first hand the courage and professionalism of our officers. I have been very clear that I will protect frontline policing in Northamptonshire. Also following the success of National Specials Weekend I have reaffirmed my support to Northamptonshire Police’s Special Constabulary. The strategic use of Special Constables will be an important priority for my term in Office. I want to see a focus on maintaining the number of volunteers policing the county at a ratio of approximately one special constable to two full-time police officers. I am currently developing my Police and Crime Plan, which will set out my aims and ambitions as Commissioner to make Northamptonshire safer. One of my key priorities is to ensure our children are safe and protected. I would also like to see a greater use of technology to enable more officers to be out on the front line rather than stuck in stations filling out paperwork and to combat issues such as the exploitation of children, domestic violence and online crime. Most importantly, I want the people of Northamptonshire to have trust and confidence in both the Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Should you wish to contact me regarding any concerns you may have, please email me at [email protected], or should you wish to report a crime please phone 101 or 999 in an emergency. Broadband in Ecton I know a number of people are interested in knowing about the progress with delivering superfast broadband across Ecton.

The village is served by two BT cabinets, one of which provides superfast broadband but the other what can only be described as slow and variable speed broadband at least to my house! Even the cabinet that provides superfast broadband is slow compared to some of the speeds being provided elsewhere in the country.

This link provides you with an update on progress with the delivery of superfast broadband in Northamptonshire: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SuperfastNorthamptonshireSurvey

No news for Ecton yet but there is a survey in the newsletter which may help move things along. So if you are interested in enjoying faster broadband and not frequent buffering please complete the survey by 30th September.

AT THE THREE HORSESHOES SATURDAY “Pugwash, at their best, are almost Beatle-like 27 AUGUST in their greatness” - Andy Partridge / XTC AT 8PM FREE ECTON SAFARI SUPPER - Saturday 8th October (in aid of Ecton Village Hall & Ecton Church)

How does it work? All the guests go on safari, moving from house to house between courses. The evening will begin at 7.30pm as we all meet together in one house for a pre-dinner drink and canapés. Everyone then moves to different houses - with different groups of people - for each course. The evening will end with everyone together again for cheese, coffee and port. Who can take part? Everyone! It’s a great way to meet friends and neighbours – particularly if you are new to Ecton. What do I have to do? It’s up to you. We do need some people to host a main course or a pudding for 8 people, or to bring a plate of canapés to the pre-dinner drinks house, but there will be spaces for those who would prefer not to be hosts. It’s not a cookery competition – simple food is fine! (There will be a financial contribution for the food and wine for those people hosting a main course or a pudding). Any profits will be split between Ecton Village Hall and Ecton Church. We are also looking for someone to host the canapés at the start of the evening and someone else to host the cheese and coffee at the end. Please let us know if you are able to help. What does it cost? Tickets are £15 per person. More questions? Ring or email either Carol Armstrong [email protected] 01604 402907 or Caroline Hunt [email protected] 07590 209311

This is a very nice seasonal dessert made with soft fruit and freezes beautifully SUMMER PUDDING SERVES 6 – 8 900g / 2lbs fruit (redcurrants, blackcurrants (not too many), blackberries, raspberries and strawberries or just a mixture of some of these fruits 30ml / 2 tablespoons water 170g / 6oz sugar 6 – 9 thin slices of stale white bread (crusts removed) Bring the redcurrants, blackcurrant's and blackberries with the water and sugar slowly to the boil. Add the raspberries and strawberries and again bring to the boil. Drain off the juice and put it to one side. Dip slices of bread into the reserved fruit juice and use to line a pudding basin, making sure that there are no gaps. While the fruit is still warm, tip it into the bread-lined basin. Cover with a layer of bread dipped in the fruit juice. Stand the pudding basin on a dish. Put a saucer or plate just smaller than the basin on top of the pudding and put a large can of fruit or a weight on top. Leave in a cool place overnight. Remove the saucer and weight. Add any pressed out juice to the rest of the dipping juice and put into a saucepan. Reduce by boiling rapidly to a syrupy consistency. Leave to cool. Invert a serving dish over the pudding and turn both over together. Give a sharp shake and remove the bowl. Just before serving, spoon over the reserved reduced fruit juice. Serve with thick double cream, crème fraiche, custard or Greek yogurt. To freeze the pudding leave in the basin and turn out after thawing. Freeze any extra juice separately.

After he was born in Northampton, there is no trace of him or his family on the 1901 Census. His parents were married in Northampton in 1889 and no trace of them on the 1891 Census. However, on the 1911 Census the whole family are living at 53 Wellington Road, Wanstead, Essex and 4 of his siblings are listed as born in RUSSIA !! His father is listed on this Census as ‘Clerk—Telegraph’ so it would appear that his father had worked in Russia and taken his wife and 5 children with him and his wife must have returned for Walter’s birth in 1898.

The Brain family is listed as follows :- William Thomas born 1866 Kingsthorpe, Northampton. Kate born 1867 Northampton. Margaret Mary born 1894 Russia. Kate born 1895 Russia. Frank Edward born 1897 Russia. Walter born 1898 Northampton. Edith Minnie born 1905 Russia. Sylvia Emily born 1909 Wanstead, Essex. On the 1871 Census, Walter’s Grandparents, William & Hannah are living in Kingsthorpe, Northampton. On the 1891 Census they are living now in Dallington, a mile away and on the 1901 Census they have returned to Kingsthorpe as ‘Grocer & General shopkeepers’ in Arthur Terrace. On the 1911 Census they are listed as ‘Retired’ and have moved to somewhere in High Street, Ecton (house not known) and William died in 1913. Strangely, I cannot find where Walter’s Grandparents or his father are buried although his mother Kate is named on a kerbed grave in Ecton, died 1942. Another confusing fact is that when the 1939 Census was taken just after the outbreak of WWII, Walter and his mother and sister Sylvia are shown as living in High Street, Moulton, about 4 miles away !! He is listed as a ‘Telegraphist retired—Temporary Clerk’. Also, I now know that during the War, he lodged with a family in Bletchley whilst he worked in Bletchley Park, although nobody was aware of what he did there, and he would often cycle from Bletchley to Ecton on his days off, quite a distance !! I have recently been in contact with, and met, a Steward @ Bletchley Park who used to know Walter during the War because he eventually married the daughter from this same house and used to call him Uncle Walter !! This has also led to being in touch with the Grand-daughter of Walter’s sister Edith Minnie, who lives in Australia !! What a small world! So maybe the house in Ecton where Walter lived, No. 66 High Street, was the same house that his Grandparents had lived in some years before.
