The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by on January 1, 1863. The proclamation freed slaves in ten southern Confederate states. His goal was to free all slaves in areas not then under Union control. This presidential order did not end slavery immediately, however, it did provide the basis for the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution abolished, or ended, slavery a few years later. The executive order only freed slaves in the southern Confederate states that were still in rebellion. Lincoln did not have the power to free slaves in the border states. Some believe that the Emancipation Proclamation was the start of Reconstruction and restoration in the United States. As Union forces advanced, over four million slaves were freed, some of them joined the Union army. The was a short, two minute speech delivered by President in 1863. The speech focused on the principles of equality, freedom and democracy. The Gettysburg Address was written for the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery to honor the dead. The dedication took place on November 19, 1863 in Gettysburg, . It was four months after the bloody Battle of Gettysburg. This speech was made during the Civil War. He argued that the Civil War wasn’t just a fight for the Union, but for "a new birth of freedom." Becoming one united nation would make everyone truly equal. The country turned to Abraham Lincoln to start the process of Reconstruction and rebuilding. The goal of Reconstruction was to reunify the Confederate and Union states. Federal troops were sent to the South to make sure laws were being followed and to prevent chaos or uprisings. On December 8, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. This was viewed as an attempt to reunify. The goal was to help former Confederate states be readmitted to the Union. Lincoln's ideas seemed to be keeping the nation at peace. Sadly, he was assassinated and never had the chance to follow through with all of his Reconstruction plans. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was killed by , a Confederate sympathizer. Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. Booth jumped from the balcony onto the stage and shouted “Sic semper tyrannis" which means "Thus always to .” He was the first president to be assassinated.
