The August Editorial is written by Reverend Dr Tim Weatherstone: I have been spending quite some time of late working with others in our many parishes, breathing (hopefully) new life into our so-called Fuel Allotment or Poor charities. There are many of these across . Some have tens of thousands of pounds annually to distribute (not in our Group!) and others possibly only a few hundred pounds which is the case for most of ours. All are run by volunteers. Many can trace their formation back to the early nineteenth century when farm labourers would not have had work for the full year and would be given either access to some land to gather fuel for heating or in some manner have access to funds to buy or be given peat or coal.

The Enclosure Acts of the same period made agriculture more productive to feed Britain’s industrialisation but at the same time removed access to common land for grazing from those who could least afford to lose it. Sadly, the Church of the time appeared keen to accelerate these changes.

What were in effect the opening salvos of the globalisation that has taken hold of us all, had at least some of their origins right here amongst us. That same globalisation has come full circle and is now threatening the very quality of the air and landscape as we all know.

Although the sums involved are small, many of these little charities are still with us and perhaps can be a signal of several things: to those in need who are very much with us, that the wider community truly does care; to the Church, to be careful to look at the effect of its policies on the very people it is there to help; to all of us the privilege of having a vehicle with which to express to each other a common decency and sense of enveloping community.

I think we can recognise here Jesus’ ever-present command to love our neighbour as we love ourselves.

This was reflected in the record amount raised for St George’s Church and the Memorial Hall: the grand sum of £5,600. So thank you to all concerned for such an amazing achievement, especially the organisers, Liz and Binnie.
