The information shared by these imperial dragon robes are discussed through a cultural and technological analysis of the symbolic motifs and fabric structures of these garments to reveal the cultural and social impact of yin-yang on Qing imperial costume design. Keywords: Dragon robe, Yin and Yang, imperial/court costume Introduction Since the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the yin-yang philosophy has been utilized in Chinese court dress (Lin, 2015). The influence of yin-yang on Chinese costume design can be observed in the surviving artifacts of the Qing dynasty (Cheng, 2008; Camman, 1952). The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Costume Collection (UHMCC) houses three kosse robes (i.e., tapestry) and one embroidery dragon robes from the Qing dynasty which provide representations of the yin-yang philosophy through the motifs and color patterns of its design. These important robes were selected to exhibit during special days such as year of dragon, UHM 100 years, and UHMCC 50 year’s anniversary. There are four categories of court dress: gunfu, chaofu, jifu, changfu (Zhoa, 1989; Zhou & Gao, 1988). Three dragon robes from the UHM Costume Collection are classified as jifu, or semi-formal court robe (Vollmer, 1977a). -

Identification of Asian Garments in Small Museums

Redacted for privacy Abstract approved: Elaine Pedersen The frequent misidentification ofAsian garments in small museum collections indicated the need for a garment identification system specifically for use in differentiating the various forms ofAsian clothing. The decision tree system proposed in this thesis is intended to provide an instrument to distinguish the clothing styles ofJapan, China, Korea, Tibet, and northern Nepal which are found most frequently in museum clothing collections. The first step ofthe decision tree uses the shape ofthe neckline to distinguish the garment's country oforigin. The second step ofthe decision tree uses the sleeve shape to determine factors such as the gender and marital status ofthe wearer, and the formality level ofthe garment. The decision tree instrument was tested with a sample population of 10 undergraduates representing volunteer docents and 4 graduate students representing curators ofa small museum. The subjects were asked to determine the country oforigin, the original wearer's gender and marital status, and the garment's formality and function, as appropriate. The test was successful in identifying the country oforigin ofall 12 Asian garments and had less successful results for the remaining variables. Copyright by Alison E. FORUM Capetian France (987–1328) Introduction Damien Kempf If “France is a creation of its medieval history,”1 the rule of the Cape- tian dynasty (987–1328) in particular is traditionally regarded as the beginning of France as a nation.2 Following the narrative established by Joseph Strayer’s influential bookOn the Medieval Origins of the Mod- ern State, historians situate the construction of the French nation- state in the thirteenth century, under the reigns of Philip Augustus (1180– 1223) and Louis IX (1226–70). Territorial expansion, the development of bureaucracy, and the centralization of the royal government all con- tributed to the formation of the state in France.3 Thus it is only at the end of a long process of territorial expansion and royal affirmation that the Capetian kings managed to turn what was initially a disparate and fragmented territory into a unified kingdom, which prefigured the modern state. In this teleological framework, there is little room or interest for the first Capetian kings. The eleventh and twelfth centuries are still described as the “âge des souverains,” a period of relative anarchy and disorder during which the aristocracy dominated the political land- scape and lordship was the “normative expression of human power.”4 Compared to these powerful lords, the early Capetians pale into insignifi- cance. They controlled a royal domain centered on Paris and Orléans and struggled to keep at bay the lords dominating the powerful sur- rounding counties and duchies. One day they meet on an island and discover a shiny pebble. The dragon washes it and the phoenix polishes it unti l it becomes a pearl. Its brilliant light att racts the att enti on of the Queen of Heaven, and that night she sends a guard to steal it while the dragon and phoenix are sleeping. The next morning, the dragon and phoenix search everywhere and eventually see their pearl shining in the sky. They fl y up to retrieve it, but the pearl falls down and becomes a lake on the ground below. The dragon and the phoenix lie down beside the lake, and are sti ll there today in the guise of Dragon Mountain and Phoenix Mountain. The story is based on The Bright Pearl, a Chinese folk tale. Chinese dragons are typically depicted without wings (although they are able to fl y), and are associated with water and wisdom. Chinese phoenixes are immortal, and do not need to die and then be reborn. They are associated with loyalty and honesty. The dragon and phoenix are oft en linked to the male yin and female yang qualiti es, and in the past, a Chinese emperor’s robes would typically be embroidered with dragons and an empress’s with phoenixes. -

This is not a paper on Heraldry, but only a small collec- tion of legends regarding the incidents which are said to account for the crests and mottoes of some of the Highland clans. It is hoped that the recital of these may induce some of the members of the clans not mentioned here to tell any story they may have heard regarding their crests, so that fellow clansmen may take a deeper interest in all that pertains to the crest which many of them so proudly wear. The innate vanity which has prompted men of all races and ages to don ornaments and decorations must, among other things, be held responsible for the armorial bearings which have been, and are, worn by individuals, families, and communities, all of whom seem peculiarly sensitive as to the right of any other to impinge on their privilege of wearing the peculiar design chosen by themselves or an ancestor. Heraldry is not itself an old science, but the desire for some distinguishing ornament accounts, among savages, for the painted designs their bodies and on their shields and on ; men bearing similar designs were, and are, regarded as brethren. There is ample evidence of the antiquity of these emblems. One wonders whether Jacob in blessing his sons had in mind the emblems of the tribes when he said: " Judah is a lion's whelp. -
