(All times Central...*GLVC game) 2014 MISSOURI S&T FOOTBALL 2 S&T Head Coach Tyler Fenwick: Tyler Fenwick begins his second season at the helm of Missouri S&T’s football program after leading the Miners to a 6-5 mark in 2013. Fenwick, the 19th head coach in the history of the S&T program, was the fi rst to lead the Miners to a winning season in his fi rst year as head coach since 1914.

Fenwick came to S&T after a successful six-season stint as offensive coordinator at Missouri Western; the Griffons played in the post- season in each of those six years, including an appearance in the NCAA Division II quarterfi nals in 2012. MWSU was 53-18 during the six years Fenwick served on its staff. He is a native of Los Angeles, Calif. and also coached at Occidental College in California for four years and at Minnesota State University at Moorhead for a year before joining the staff at Missouri Western. He played collegiately as a wide receiver at Los Angeles Valley College and at the University of New Mexico.

Last year’s matchup with Chadron State: Missouri S&T and Chadron State engaged in a back-and-forth affair to open the 2013 campaign in Rolla, as the two teams swapped the lead over the course of a contest that wound up getting decided in Chadron State’s favor in double overtime by a count of 40-34. After the Eagles took the initial lead after blocking a Miner punt, S&T scored the next 17 points to take a 10-point lead with under six minutes to play in the third quarter. Chadron State answered right back with 13 points in a span of 15 seconds, with a Miner fumble lost at their own two-yard line leading to the second score.

S&T tied the game on an Adam Peden fi eld goal and took the lead with 2:57 remaining when a bad snap on a punt set up a short fi eld; Zenel Hudson capped the drive with a two-yard run to give the Miners the lead. However, the Eagles tied the score -- thanks in part to a 55-yard run by Glen Clinton -- on a scoring pass in the fi nal minute of regulation time.

Each team scored touchdowns in the fi rst overtime period, then on S&T’s possession to open the second overtime, Lane Haller picked off a pass along the sideline and returned it 79 yards for a touchdown to end the contest.

Defensively Speaking: Over the last three seasons, Missouri S&T’s defense has recorded 109 quarterback sacks, while holding its opponents to an average of 110.1 yards per game on the ground, a completion percentage of 52 percent through the air and have made 52 interceptions. Last year, S&T held its 11 foes to an average of 124.7 rushing yards per game -- and just 98 per contest over the last nine games -- with 30 sacks and a completion mark of barely over 50 percent for the season.

Coming from behind: Following a week two loss last season at Missouri Western, the Miners had lost 32 straight games in which they trailed at halftime. But after that loss, the Miners won twice after taking a defi cit to the locker room and in both cases, trailed by double fi gures when the second half began.

The Miners trailed 14-3 to Wisconsin-LaCrosse before scoring 24 unanswered points in the second half for a 27-14 win, then trailed 13-0 to Saint Joseph’s on Oct. 19 before a 14-0 second half propelled them to a one-point win over the Pumas. The win over Saint Joseph’s also marked the fi rst time since the Oct. 16, 2010 overtime win over Kentucky Wesleyan that S&T had won a game in which it trailed heading into the fourth quarter.

Prior to last year’s double overtime loss to Chadron State in Rolla, the Miners had won their last two openers, including the 2011 contest at Oklahoma Panhandle State that marked the last time they began a year with a road victory.

The fi ve fastest scores to start a season: 1973 vs. Wayne State (Neb.): Rick LaFollette 49-yard pass to Steve Smith (1:13 into play) 2012 vs. Oklahoma Panhandle State: Curterris Golden 16-yard run (1:59) 2001 vs. Quincy: Ken Okwuonu 64-yard run (2:00) 1991 vs. Michigan Tech: Carlos Cain 37-yard run (2:24) 2004 vs. Upper Iowa: Keenan Miller 11-yard run (3:06)

Last year’s fi rst score came with 30 seconds remaining in the fi rst quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Reed Brown to Melvin Stovall.

The earliest defensive score ranks seventh on the list, as Tony Kaczmarek recovered a fumble in the end zone 4:10 into the 1981 opener at William Penn.

S&T has received a touchdown from its special teams units in two of the last three openers, getting a 25-yard return of a fumbled snap on a punt by Zach Melber to start the scoring in 2011 at Oklahoma Panhandle State and a 58-yard punt returrn for a score a year later from Carlton Westbrook.

Ken Okwuonu, whose 64-yard scoring run against Quincy in the 2001 opener came on the third play from scrimmage, holds the S&T record for rushing yards in a opener with 211 in 2000 against Kentucky Wesleyan. The record for passing yards was set by Joe Winters in 2006 at Tiffi n with 402, while the 178 receiving yards by Chris Alverson in 1992 at Iowa Wesleyan is the high mark in that category.

Alverson also caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the fourth quarter of that 1992 contest, capping a Miner rally from a 19-point defi cit -- the largest overcome by an S&T team in a season-opening contest

Cecil Taylor’s 88-yard run in the 1968 game at Washington University stands as the longest play from scrimmage in a Miner opener, while the longest pass play took place three years ago when Nick Taylor -- a senior on the 2014 Miners -- hauled in a 72-yard scoring pass from Josh Firm. Perry Allison returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in 1955 at Pittsburg State; however, according to available records, no Miner has ever returned the opening kickoff of a season for a touchdown. Allison’s return was the Miners’ second score of that game.

The last returns for touchdowns in a season opener: Kickoff: Randy Shed (97 yards in 1983 at Missouri Western) Punt (blocked punt): Jason Beerman (8 yards in 1997 at Quincy) Punt (kicked ball): Carlton Westbrook (58 yards in 2012 vs. Oklahoma Panhandle State) Interception: Rodrick McDonald (62 yards in 2005 at Upper Iowa) Fumble: Zach Melber (25 yards in 2011 at Oklahoma Panhandle State)

Quick Hits on Chadron State

• Chadron State fi nished the 2013 season at 8-3 overall and second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 7-2 mark.

• The Eagles ranked 17th in NCAA Division II last season with an average of 484.3 yards per game. CSC averaged 233.8 of that on the ground, but 138 of them came from graduated senior Glen Clinton. Michael Madkins is the top returning rusher for the Eagles; he ran for 508 yards a year ago.

• Quarterback Jonn McLain, who threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ win in Rolla last September, completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 2,615 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2013.

• The Eagles’ top returning tackler is linebacker Dylan Furrier, who recorded 75 tackles a year ago. Safety Lane Haller, who had the game-ending interception return in last year’s matchup with S&T, had 74 tackles last season.

A victory over Chadron State would: -- Give the Miners a victory in a season opener for the third time in four years. -- Give the Miners a season opening win on the road for the fi rst time since 2011. -- Give the Miners their 22nd victory in their last 31 games overall since Sept. 24, 2011. -- Give the Miners their fi rst-ever win in the state of Nebraska (0-1-1 all-time). 2014 MISSOURI S&T FOOTBALL 5 Career Statistics/Career Highs of Returning Players
