Dear friends

The jubilee came to us with plenty of water! But despite the downpour, we shared two wonderful services as we worshipped Jesus Christ and gave thanks to God for sixty years of service and leadership from Her Majesty the Queen.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard at Thorpe, erecting and fitting out the much needed marquee, providing the PA and of course to the fantastic musicians who made the service special. My water balloon visual aid failed in the most bizarre and amusing of ways giving Pete Sadler ample opportunity to demonstrate what a good sport he is. Thanks Pete, I hope your dentist will forgive me! For those of you that missed it, the videos are on our on the internet at www.facebook.com/fivechurches.

In the evening at Parwich we worshipped and celebrated with a traditional sung service of Holy Communion. Thank you to Christine Williams and the choir whose singing added so beautifully to the service and especially to Jonathan Marshall for cantoring.

On a different note, the Bishop of has asked me to serve as Rural Dean of Ashbourne. This will be in addition to my present duties. He has kindly offered to reduce my current Diocese related workload. The additional work will bring some change to my working patterns but also additional opportunities for our parishes. On July 15th we are all invited to join with other church congregations from the Wirksworth and Ashbourne areas for a special open air service of celebration at . The service will begin at 3pm and will take place on the steps behind the Visitors Centre. Do come and enjoy what I'm sure will be a lovely service.

As we look towards the summer and hope for some warmth and sunshine, I pray that we will all also know more of the light of Christ warming our hearts as we serve Him.

Wishing you Christ's peace,

Andy

Raymond Sydney Cork of Springfield House, Fenny Bentley and formerly of Shaws Farm, ; passed away 15th May 2012.

Kathleen Cork, her daughter Fiona and son-in-law Christopher Green would like to thank friends, neighbours and relatives for their support and kind help during the difficult months of Ray's illness since mid-December. Thank you also for all of the many lovely cards, flowers and messages received since Ray's death; your presence in church alongside us on May 25th was very much appreciated.

A special thank you to Rev. Andy Larkin, Rev. Tim Morris and Ros Hunt for all they did to make the service one of celebration and fellowship. Thank you also to Brenda, Dennis, and Mr & Mrs Pearson whose kind help made it possible to have refreshments in church. We feel very blessed to live in such a lovely community.

Many thanks to you all, Kath, Fiona and Christopher

On behalf of the Fenny Bentley Initiative a huge ‘thank you’ must go to everyone involved with the preparation, setting up and cleaning up of our village Jubilee Celebrations. Everyone who attended the event said they’d had a great time and most would like a similar event to be organised annually! Thank you also to the School for the use of their playground and to David Thorpe for lending us extra tables and chairs. It is hoped that a newsletter will be delivered shortly with some ideas for future events, your feedback and support will be greatly appreciated.

Pete and I would like to thank everyone involved in organising the village Jubilee Celebration, it was wonderful to have a lovely tea and get everyone together. We really appreciate everyone’s hard work in organising the event. Eileen Woodroffe

FitzHerbert Primary School News

Congratulations to the staff and students of our church school on two fantastic inspection results. The recent Ofsted inspection graded the school as 'Good' in every category except Pupil Behaviour, which was graded as 'Outstanding'. Ofsted's inspection was followed by a Church of 's inspection, which scored the school with the maximum grade 'Outstanding' in four out of the five areas and 'Good' in the fifth. This is a marvellous result and well deserved by the staff team who work so hard for the children.

COFFEE MORNINGS

There were only ten people at the Coffee Morning on 20th June but we talked over the Jubilee celebrations and generally ‘put the world to rights’. We had a pleasant morning with friends and also managed to collect £45.00 for the British Red Cross. Julia Crosby has written these words as I was enjoying a peaceful holiday on the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland! A cheque has been sent to the local branch of the Red Cross. Thank you to all who contributed.

A letter has been received from Christian Aid thanking us for sending a donation of £40 raised at the Coffee morning which coincided with Christian Aid week. They said: “the money raised will go to help some of the world’s poorest communities to lift themselves out of poverty, ensuring people, like 13 year old Musah and his sister Fatimata aged 11 from Ghana, are given a better quality of life. Both children have missed years of education because their nearest proper school was several hours’ walk away. Musah’s community challenged their government to campaign for a school, giving the children of his community the chance of a better future and a better quality of life.”

Future dates: July 18th, August 15th and Sept 19th in the Village Hall at the usual time between 10.30 am and 12 noon. The Charity to benefit from any donations on July 18th will be Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. On Aug. 15th the charity to benefit from donations will be for Ashbourne Community First Responders.

THORPE JUBILEE PARTY OVERCOMES THE ELEMENTS

At the end of most of the planning meetings for Thorpe’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on 3rd June, one of the committee would quip that of course we would need a contingency because it was ‘bound to rain’. And rain it did…..a lot…..and it was cold. Single digit temperatures in June!

Of course being British, the only thing we do better than talking about the weather, is coping with it, and the village coped, in some style.

In many ways the celebrations began with the community gathering on Saturday 2nd to put up the bunting which had been lovingly hand made by villagers over many hours. The construction team also erected the marquee generously donated, together with the lion’s share of the funding for the event, by the Dash committee.

The day itself began with a typically thought provoking and entertaining service led by Andy Larkin in the marquee, based on the theme God Save the Queen. With a congregation made up from across the benefice, and music provided by the Thorpe based Dovedalers folk band, it was a wonderfully uplifting start to the day. Fifteen hardy teams tackled a Treasure Hunt around the village just after lunch time, and then the youngsters in the village put their sporting talents to the test during the hastily rearranged Thorpe (Indoor) Olympics in a generously donated farm barn, and the trusty marquee.

The advertised Street Party soon became a party split between the Village Hall and the marquee, with a tremendous spread of food provided by the village for the village. A bring and share theme really did bring everyone together, although attendees far exceeded any estimates of the organisers. Note to villagers; RSVP means “pick the phone up and let us know you are coming, Chuck”.

After a best crown competition, and the presentation of commemorative mugs to the youngsters in the village, a wonderful barn dance and music evening followed in the Village Hall, with music again from the resident band. Neither the food nor the beer ran out and even though the party finished late, the community came together again early, okay at nine thirty, the next morning to tidy the hall and put the village back together. The party has now been packed away, but the memories of catching up with old friends and new haven’t and for sure we will all recall the fun we had and we’ll ignore the r.a.i.n. Peter Sadler Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

As a village, Thorpe can be very proud of how we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The plans began many weeks (or was it months?) ago after the formation of a committee and, although many people were involved in setting up or clearing away over the week-end, it is thanks to the foresight and hard work of the committee members (Beverley Bock, Peter Sadler, Clarke Lomas, Janeke Gorzeman, Barbara Fithen) that we had such a successful day.

Our own Thorpe band featured at both ends of the day and deserve much praise for their talents and stamina. Also the shared food was a delight!

Despite the never ending rain everyone participated in some or all of the day’s events. It was wonderful to see the villagers working together as a community with such energy to make things really special. Truly, it was a day to remember. Grateful Thorpe Residents

Derbyshire Churches and Chapels Preservation Trust (DCCPT) ‘Ride and Stride’

This annual national sponsored event will take place this year on Saturday, September 8th. It would be wonderful if any of you would care to take part – whether on bikes or walking. Sponsorship forms will be available from the end of July and can be obtained from churchwardens. It would be great if refreshments could be provided in each church and even a rota of people to man the churches! However, this is not always possible and is not obligatory, but it does make a big difference to those taking part.

The Trust exists to provide grants for Churches and Chapels of all denominations in Derbyshire for their repair and maintenance. 50p out of every £1 raised comes back to the church you nominate.

As it happens, we are having an OPEN meeting of the Deanery Synod to be held at Village Hall on Tuesday, July 10th at 7.30 pm at which there will be a speaker to talk to us about the work of the Trust which should be interesting. You will all be welcome to come and listen! RH

Thorpe Village Hall Annual General Meeting will be held in the Hall on Thursday 5 July 2012 at 7:30 pm. The agenda is –

• Apologies for absence • Approval of the minutes of the annual general meeting of Thursday 28 April 2011 • Annual report • Treasurer's report • Conversion of Village Hall Title from Possessory to Absolute • Election of the management committee

The hall is a charity managed by eight trustees, five of whom are elected at this meeting. The PCC, the PC and the Dovedale Dash nominate the other three trustees.

There are two vacancies and replacements are needed. The duties are not onerous – the hall has a caretaker and shortfalls in funding are met by the Dovedale Dash. Two or three committee meetings a year are usual. The trustees no longer organize social events but someone with bright ideas and enthusiasm would be very welcome.

CHURCH FETE

The date this year for the Fete is Sunday 30th July 2012, 1.30-4.00pm at the Hall. The usual stalls will be in abundance and this year we have the Osmaston Wind Band in attendance. Entrance £2, children free.

TISSINGTON SECRET GARDENS

The Open Gardens day will be on Sunday 5 August between 12 and 4pm. We have about 10 gardens opening so let us hope for good weather again. Tickets will be £5 per family or £2 per adult.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLAN (TMP)

After several exhaustive meetings it is proposed that we need a SURVEY of traffic movements in the village in order to proceed with the idea of installing a car park. This, as you might expect, is not a cheap operation and despite the National Park indicating that we need a car park, they have also said that the Village and Estate should pay for it. Dates are not decided yet but look out for researchers in high-vis jackets monitoring car movements.

CHURCH HOUSE

Please welcome Chris Redding & Julie Coulbert to Church House. They will be moving in with their children and animals over the next few months. Please make them welcome in the village.
