EDITORIAL
Editorial: Goodbye 2016, Welcome 2017 ? By Felipe Galindo Secretary General FECO
I’d like to start this editorial writing a short remembrance for the fallen Charlie Hebdo cartoonists and staff members, at two years of their tragic demise on January 7, 2015. A recount on CH website remind us: “The Kouachi brothers, hooded and armed with Kalashnikovs, burst into the editorial meeting shooting at the assembled people. They kill cartoonists Cabu, Charb, Honoré, Tignous and Wolinski, psychoanalyst Elsa Cayat, economist Bernard Maris, proof-reader Mustapha Ourrad, police officer Frank Brinsolaro protecting Charb, Michel Renaud, founder of the Rendez-vous du Carnet de voyage festival invited to the meeting, and caretaker Frédéric Boisseau. They also seriously wound cartoonist Riss, journalists Philippe Lançon and Fabrice Nicolino and webmaster Simon Fieschi. As they leave the building, just before killing policeman Ahmed Merabet, the terrorists shout: “We’ve avenged the prophet Muhammad”- the same prophet who later declares “it is hard to be loved by idiots”. Remaining staff move once again to daily broadsheet Libération, where they stay 10 months. It’s time to live or die: Charlie Hebdo will live on.
Their sacrifice was the start of a series of fundamentalist terrorist attacks in France and other countries. I do hope the ideas that flourished from France in the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century continue to take hold all over the world, to get rid of ignorance and fundamentalism. Charlie Hebdo continues to be printed weekly and to create uproar with their cartoons as it is customary. A recent cover shows President Obama, after leaving office, running for cover from a white policeman who is shooting at him, sharing the fears of many Afro-Americans in the USA. Business as usual for Charlie Hebdo, and American policemen!
I’d like to talk about a couple of major surprises, among many, from 2016: Britain’s exit from the European Union and later in the year the election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the USA. This last one was followed all over the world in a similar vein as a World Cup final and the results were similar as when Brazil was beaten by Germany 7-1. More than half of the USA population was in total disbelief - many still are- and I think billions of people all over the world. The consequences of these elections are still to be felt. Cartoonists worldwide had been busy with Donald Trump as a candidate for the White House, with a demagogic, inflammatory and insulting rhetoric against Mexicans, Muslims, immigrants, undocumented, women, handicapped, veterans, etc. Now cartoonists will be busy again with him as president of the USA. Many of us wished not to have to deal with this possibility, of making caricatures of a caricature. The USA is known for being a land of opportunity. It was a surprise 8 years ago that an African-American was elected President and therefore, a resident of the White House, and the same can be said now of an egocentric millionaire with no political experience, to have achieved the same. An issue that has been in the news for many months is the plight of refugees, escaping either from Africa or the war thorn areas in Syria and the Middle East. This theme has been chosen by many cartoonists, several receiving awards for their great visual metaphors regarding this ongoing dilemma. Another victim of this area of conflict has been journalism, especially in Turkey, as the government has arrested 120 journalists, since the failed coup attempt in July, including cartoonist Musa Kart and 10 other of his colleagues from Cumhuriyet, the country’s last major independent publication. We hope freedom of expression comes back to Turkey, land of many cartoon competitions and great cartoonists.
I wish 2017 bring less unexpected surprises or more pleasant ones, better news for the sake of this baffling world we all live in. And more humor of course, a great remedy!
Donald Trump and Cartoonists
The recent elections in the USA were a topic of discussion all over the world and cartoonists and artists have responded with images in response to the election outcome. While in Istanbul, I had the opportunity to spend some time with cartoonists from various parts of the world. I decided to ask their opinion about the election results.
Several of them coincided at the awkward outcome and received the news as something terrible for America and the world. Some were cautious and think that Trump is a big question mark. A few were hopeful, due to his business skills and believe that despite Donald’s menacing discourse, they hope that Trump will change (as if!)
For Brazilians, like Rodrigo, his election as president was like a really bad joke, although will give plenty of material to cartoonists to draw. Cau was more specific: “He is an unpleasant malevolent political actor that will create misery for many with his racism, he is a negative cloud that will bring backwardness to the world.” Rucke added “ He’s a fascist reactionary, dangerous, crazy, can’t do all he said was going to do, good political manipulator, that’s why he won, but dangerous. I look forward to draw him.” Serbian cartoonist, Jugoslav Vlahovic, mentioned that people in his country were, if not in open support for Trump, at least didn’t want anything to do with Hillary Clinton, after her husband and NATO ordered the bombing of Belgrade back in the 1990’s. But warned that it might give an impulse to rightists politicians in Europe.
Artist and curator Andrea Arroyo organized a project in New York City, in the aftermath of the elections, called Unnatural Election, to channel artists indignantion at the outcome. The project has a Facebook page, a website and she is looking to organize an exhibition to showcase the visual reaction of many artists, including many cartoonists. Guidelines and samples of such works can be seen at www.UnnaturalElection.com Felipe Galindo
