Group walks being classified by the UKgovernment as ‘organised physical acvities’ which can take place in groups larger than six,we met fora tentative trial walk in April. The footpath walking group will now be regularly meeng every month as long as we can stay clear offurther lock-down restrictions.

We had an enjoyable circular walk towards Toppesfield, down Scotney Lane, past Cobb'sLa ke and back via Bloom'sLa ne and Poole Farm toLe ather Lane.

Apart from a few lingering muddy patches it was dryu nderfoot ande asy walking, about 4 1/2 miles in a reasonable 2 hours. It was treat to be out, stretching our legs in the fresh (bordering on nippy) air aer so much confinement.

Everyone is welcome to join ust o explore ourl ocal paths, meeng at 10.00 am on the second Saturday of the month by the village signo n the village green.

With spring in full swing, the lawn will be growing very quickly, so it’s best to keep on top of the mowing. It’s easier and beer for the lawn to mow regularly, ideally once a week, than mowing through long grass on fewer occasions. If you haven’t had a chance to mow the lawn recently and it has grown very long it will need mowing twice, once on a high seng and then again on a lower seng to neaten the first cut.

It’s important to leave your frost-tender plants, such as summer bedding, in a sheltered place unl all risk of frost has passed. Usually, the end of May is a safe me, however, they will need to be hardened off first. To prevent the risk of losses due to planng out, harden them off by leaving them outside in their pots during the day me, only bringing them in at night. This eases them into outdoor life a lot more gradually, as a result of this you’ll be able to enjoy a healthy display from your plants in the summer. Once you have planted your bedding give them a generous dose of water to sele them into their new posion.

Pull the spent flowers off any remaining spring bulbs. To maintain a healthy bulb for next year don’t cut the leaves off. All green parts are sll photosynthesising and pung energy into the bulb which will be stored and used next spring. Where bulbs have naturalised in your garden you may now have a large clump of flowers in one place. Dividing your bulbs means that next year, not only will you have a beer spacing of flowers, but they will mulply even more.

Ponds could also do with some TLC now so remove duckweed and blanket weed from ponds, and thin out submerged oxygenang pond plants. Leave any removed weed beside your pond overnight to allow any small creatures to find their way back into the water. Feed pond fish lile and oen. Too much food will not be eaten and will rot at the boom of the pond adding to the build up of dirty water.

Contact the Editor [email protected] DO YOUKNOW...... thatthe main road through Great Yeldham was once a Toll Road?

A gate, called a turnpike, was set across ar oad to preventp assage along a road until a fee, known as a toll, had been paid.

In 1765 a TurnP ike was erectedt o enable tolls tob e collected from traffic entering GreatYeldham,

Froms ketches of the time when our TurnP ike stille xisted, it appears that this was simply a gate, probably made of metal with a fence extending over the verges to prevent animals orc arts creeping round thesidesofthegate and avoidingp aying the toll.

If you walk up Poole Street today towards Sible Hedingham and passb y Poole Farm, the next house on the left, a small cottage close to ther oad, istheT oll Gate Cottage. From heret het oll was collected and access to Great Yeldham was allowed.

Almost 100 years after the erectiono f the Toll Gate, the Essex Turnpike Trusteesincreased the cost of the tolls so that a waggon or another such 4 wheeledc arriage with 9 inchw heels and drawn by8horses, would be charged from 2shillingsand6penceup to 3 shillings. A ladeno r unladen horse, not pulling a cartw ould be charged between 1 penny up to 1-and-a-half pence.

Around 1866 the upkeepo f the road through Great Yeldhamwas transferred to the Parish and the Turnpike Gate was removed.
