ADVERTISING FEATURE Saudi rams improve New Zealand sheep

GERARD HUTCHING

Awassi rams from the Hawke’s Bay farm of Saudi businessman Hmood Alali Alkhalaf are being used to build up New Zealand’s sheep milk flock. The Middle Eastern breed is injecting hybrid vigour into the east friesian sheep run by the Waituhi Kuratau Trust (WKT), the Turangi-based Maori land trust, which owns Maui Milk. Maui Milk general manager Peter Gatley said the east friesians were not ideally suited to New Zealand conditions. ‘‘The east friesians can pump out the milk but they’re used to living in barns, they don’t like strong sunlight or being outside in the winter. ‘‘The awassi are capable of pro- ducing impressive volumes of milk, but are known as a much hardier breed than the east frie- sian,’’ Gatley said. Former Invermay head Dr Jock Allison brokered the deal. He was the original importer of the east friesians, and had kept deep frozen 1700 embryos in liquid nitrogen for more than 20 years. Last year these embryos were implanted into WKT’s ewes, resulting in more than 300 ewes and 300 rams. Gatley said Maui Milk was grateful to Awassi NZ for working with it, because the latter had been developing its genetics for some years and was highly protec- tive of them. The possibility of importing the awassi genetics from the Middle East would have been ‘‘remote’’. The new awassi-east friesian cross is known in the Middle East as the assaf, coincidentally the An awassi ram out among east friesian ewes this autumn.
