Background The Wuxi Grand Theatre covers a total area of 100,000 m² and stands on the south bank of the Lihu Lake. The building, which has been compared with the Sydney Opera House, is designed to look like a dragonfl y with a roof constructed in eight wing-shape sections. Costing over RMB 1bn to build, it was completed in May 2011. The development consists of a main performing hall with a capacity of 1700 and second multi-function hall with a capacity of 700.
The solution During the initial design phase, the roles and areas of infl uence of PES in Finland and China were established and a dialogue began with both offi ces. AkzoNobel secured sole specifi cation from the owner and our products were specifi ed within the technical requirements of the design documents. At the beginning, both Interfi ne® 878 and Interthane 990 were considered but fi nally, a top coat of Interthane 990 only was selected as the architect required a metallic coloring. The product was also chosen for its long term recoatibility. Several fabricators bidding on the project were identifi ed and visited by AkzoNobel. All companies in the contract chain have been satisfi ed with our products in terms of quality, aesthetics and also technical support.

Background Line 3 of Chongqing light rail is currently being constructed in 3 phases. Phases 1 and 2 are now fi nished, with phase 3 ongoing. The project is very well known as the light railway runs the length of ChongQing city. This project was introduced to reduce traffi c jams in the city and in addition the government has decided to build series of light railways. The owner has high quality requirements for this project in terms of aesthetics and particularly in terms of safety for users of public transport. The customer requires excellent anticorrosion and fi re protection performance. In a fi re, in is essential that people have enough time to escape the building.
The solution From hundreds of paint suppliers and local brands, AkzoNobel were chosen to provide the most appropriate solutions for the customers expectations. The customer was primarily impressed by our perfomance and high level of service. The Interchar Range of intumescents from AkzoNobel is designed to provide safety to people by protecting structural steelwork from a cellulosic or “standard” fi re for periods of up to three hours. Interchar, AkzoNobel’s comprehensive range of thin fi lm acrylic coatings provides an effi cient method to protect steelwork while maintaining the visual and architectural aesthetics of a structure. To account for severe environmental exposures, durable epoxy Interchar intumescents are also available. In addition to durability, these extremely resilient intumescent coatings have the benefi t of testing against blast and impact. The owner chose our products for their high quality and aesthetics as well as for our testing processes. At AkzoNobel we ensure that all of our Interchar products are independently tested and certifi ed. This involves type testing and audit testing for fi re and non-fi re performance together with factory production control.

Background The Shanghai Tower Building will be the tallest building in Shanghai at a height of 632 metres. The construction area in total adds up to 576,000m2. Three shareholders form the equity partnership for the Shanghai Tower and are jointly funding the development and construction of the building with registered capital of RMB 5.4 billion. Side by side with the Jinmao Tower and the World Financial Center, the Shanghai Tower is located at the heart of the Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone. Together this trio will redefi ne the Lujiazui area skyline and provide it with a new look, which will in turn demonstrate success of the Pudong New Area. Driven to pursue the “highest, noblest and most exquisite” design and development objectives for Shanghai Tower, the corporation is leveraging more than 10 years of construction management and market expertise to deliver a landmark building worthy of Shanghai’s place on the world stage.
The solution Interchar 1983 is a single component, solvent borne, high solids intumescent coating independently tested to assess fi re protection performance on structural steelwork in accordance with Chinese Standard GB 14907-2002. It has been tested to GB14907 for internal and external use. The intented use is to provide fi re protection for stair steel structures and facade supporting steel structures up to 1.5 hours. Interchar 1983 represents the latest development in fi re protection and is supported by over 30 years experience in this fi eld. In house testing has been completed in Suzhou prior to the project to confi rm compatibility of the primer and the system. Topcoats will be applied on site. Our fi rst class products, the Technical Interchar 1983 is suitable for application in both on and off-site application Service Representative and our high facilities and can be used over a range of approved priming systems. Applied as a thin layer, our product does not compromise intricate designs quality of service all contributed towards and shapes created from the structural steel. It is also an easy over coating our success at the Shanghai Tower. with a wide range of coloured fi nishes allowing the full design features to be fully displayed. That is why even though there was tough competition during the tender period, AkzoNobel’s system was chosen as being the most suitable product solution for this project.

Background Interchar bolt caps were successfully used on the Cameron Bridge Distillery, Leven, Fife – this was a two hour protection requirement and Interchar 1190 was applied to the steel offsite by Central Blasting and Painting and transported to and erected on site with no damage. This left only the bolted connection remaining to be protected. The solution The installation contractor was Graham Robinson of Tayblast who stated “using bolt caps made the time on site to protect the bolted connections an absolute minimum, one tap and they are done. This job was a dream as the intumescent paint had all been applied offsite and the bolts were the only thing left - no mess, no wasting time on cherry pickers, no paint on site, no multiple coating. I would recommend and use again - neat, effective and effi cient.” This was a good example of best practice with minimum time spent on site and maximum protection that is repeatable and effi cient to install and it does not cost more and there are no waste disposal or inspections costs.
