SAVED: An elderly man asleep in a bedroom had a lucky escape after a fire gutted the family home in Kara Street, Kaiti, last night around 7.30pm. The rest of his whanau were having a function in the backyard when the fire started, and it spread quickly, almost completely destroying the weatherboard home. The whole street came together to help, said one resident, with family and neighbours smashing the bedroom window and pulling the man to safety, while others dialled 111. LOCKDOWN MEASURES: Friends wave hello during Number of isolation Alert Level 4 to observe social-distancing advice. breaches in two NZ Herald picture months revealed AUCKLAND — Official figures show 32 people breached Covid-19 isolation rules during the 58 days from April 14 to June 14. Nobody was charged and all were dealt with via warnings and education. The breaches were either absconding, failing to return, or trying to flee the managed-isolation facilities. Half of the breaches were people who failed to return or were late to return after being granted an exemption to attend a funeral or tangi. Seven people escaped isolation, including four who fled Rydges Hotel in Auckland on May 10 — which does not appear to have been reported publicly. The four people were later found at a relative’s house. After weighing up the health risks, no charges were laid but those involved were warned and educated. The Ministry of Health ran mobile testing of people they had been in contact with while away from isolation. In a briefing to the Police Minister on June 22, obtained under the Official Information Act, it said the quarantine and managed-isolation operation, dubbed Operation Mercy, was run by the Ministry and Defence Force, not police. CAN I KEEP IT?: Arlo Welch, 2, looks happy in the seat of a left-hand-drive Corvette Stingray. The classic cars on display helped raise around $1000 for the Aviation Museum. Other fundraiser events included a ride in the sky in a former New Zealand Air Force plane on Sunday. The Harvard 66 served from 1943 to 1978. Pilot Roger Van der Zenden said anyone who wanted to enjoy a 20-minute flight in the aircraft could contact him on 022 453 1880. The plane usually resides in Tauranga but is owned as part of a syndicate that includes Gisborne and Tauranga people. While it was in town, Aviation Museum Trust Board member Mr Van der Zenden said it would be great to keep having people taken up in it to raise more funds for the museum. Pictures by Liam Clayton

Fiona Xu knows all about battling for form. She went into the NZ amateur not having won an event since December of last year and her struggles continued into and after the Covid-19 lockdown. Xu broke out of that rut in outstanding style with her 35th-hole win over a gritty Raj. “It feels really good,” she said. “I haven’t had a win in a long time now so it’s great to be back. “I wasn’t playing very well after we went into lockdown and I missed a cut and placed second-to- last at The Carrus Open in Tauranga. I’m glad I’ve found my game again.” It was a tit-for-tat over the first 18 holes that ended in the pair being locked all-square Xu won the first hole (19th) of the afternoon session but Raj went ahead for the first and only time after winning the fourth (22nd) and fifth (23rd) holes — both with birdies — only for Xu to bounce back with wins on the seventh (25th) and eighth (26th). Xu won the 11th (29th) and 12th (30th) to go 3-up, but Raj was not going away and birdies on the 13th (31st) and 14th (32nd) closed the deficit to 1-down. A superb approach shot by Xu on the 15th (33rd) for a gimme birdie gave her a 2-up buffer and she sealed her first NZ amateur crown in style on the 17th (35th). “It means a lot. I get to put my name on that historical trophy and when people look at it in the future, they’ll see my name there alongside some of the greats of our sport in New Zealand. I just told myself to play the best I could on this great golf course and to relax and enjoy every moment of it.” Superb Gisborne weather, a course in immaculate condition, including greens that would rate among GIMME A BREAK: Fiona Xu studies the break of a putt at the New Zealand amateur on the Awapuni Links course.
