4 CONNECTIONS MAGAZINE • Spring 2017 ADVANCEMENT Meet the Director of Alumni Relations, Susan Butcher Roarty '95

Susan Butcher Roarty ’95 has been a familiar face on campus since the day she graduated. As an alumna, she has remained a consistent volunteer, helping to plan all of her class reunions, serving as co-chair for A Golden Gala, John Carroll’s 50th anniversary celebration, and volunteering for the Alumni Association. Susan also served on John Carroll’s Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2013 and worked as an associate in the Enrollment Office from 2013 to 2017. Susan with her husband, Danny, and their future Patriots, How was your John Carroll experience? Ginger (11), Sarajane (8) and Wynne (4) “John Carroll provided me with many incredible opportunities that helped shape me into the person I am today. The vast extracurricular program provided me with many avenues to develop leadership skills, learn the importance of giving back and form long-lasting friendships. The challenging academic program paved the way for a smooth transition to college and graduate school. Travel abroad opportunities with dedicated teachers helped me to see the world beyond my suburban neighborhood and gain a global perspective at a young age. Faculty and staff went above and beyond to help me reach my full potential not only as a student, but as a human being. “I developed meaningful relationships with students, faculty and staff that have endured to this day. Participating in great JC traditions, such as Senior Variety Show and receiving my John Carroll ring, instantly connected me to generations of Patriots. Ultimately, John Carroll became a second family to me. It just felt like home, and I knew then that this was a community where I would always be welcomed and embraced. I consider my four years as a John Carroll student to be one of the greatest blessings in my life.” Susan Butcher Roarty in the 1995 Pacificus yearbook Why did you want to be the Director of Alumni Relations? “The Director of Alumni Relations position is a job I have dreamed of having for years! I am so proud to be a Patriot and to be among a group of alumni doing incredible things locally, nationally and across the globe. I love meeting John Carroll alumni, hearing about their life journeys and discovering how their time at John Carroll impacted their lives. Additionally, I wanted the chance to enhance our alumni programming. I hope to develop more opportunities for alumni to not only reconnect with the school community, but also with each other! Finally, I wanted this position because I believe in the school’s mission, and I want to do my part to make a positive impact on the future direction of the school.”

What are your goals as you begin your first year as the Director of Alumni Relations? “I am so honored and grateful to have been selected as John Carroll’s new Director of Alumni Relations. This is a job that I will not take lightly, as I know there is a lot we can do to take the Alumni Association to the next level! My primary goals are to provide consistent opportunities locally and nationally throughout the year for alumni to connect with each other and have fun, to create a more formalized Alumni Association including the development of a Young Alumni program, to recognize and celebrate more alumni within our community and ultimately to strengthen the ties between alumni and the school. I view this position as a tremendous opportunity to connect with and represent you, my fellow alumni!”

What can alumni do to get involved? “First and foremost, we want to stay in touch with you! Please keep us informed of any contact information updates at johncarroll.org/alumni-update, and remind your friends to do so, as well. We love to hear from our alumni! “Second, please share your ideas! I want to meet with as many alumni as possible to hear what you are looking for from the Alumni Office. After all, the Alumni Office is about you! Share with me how you envision the future efforts of our Alumni Association. “Third, become an active member of the alumni community. Join the planning committee for your class reunion. Reunite with friends at Alumni Weekend. Suggest a location for the next Alumni Happy Hour or host a regional event. Your participation is key to a strong Alumni Association! “Finally, consider giving back. I have found this to be a very rewarding way to stay involved in the John Carroll community. Whether it’s through a donation toward school programming, becoming a Senior Project evaluator, nominating a fellow alum for the Riepe Alumni Award, placing an Open House flyer in your place of business, or attending an athletic or arts event, there are many ways for you to give back and stay involved in the John Carroll community!” JOHNCARROLL.ORG 5 Seeking a “Great Perhaps” Morgan Jones ’13 Explores Caves Across the Globe By Joseph Schuberth

Once Morgan Jones ’13 has a goal set, nothing will stand in her way of achieving it. She has known that she wanted to be a geologist since the sixth grade. She worked five jobs as a student at John Carroll to help her parents pay for her education. When she graduated and attended Hofstra University, she cut her jobs down to three but added 21 credits every semester so she could graduate in three years, the most economical way for someone to finish school, since she was paying her own way.

During her time at Hofstra, Morgan met a cave explorer named Chris Nikola, in anthropology, sustainability, Russian and geography, she decided who took her to her first wild cave and would become her mentor. Nikola to take a semester off from school to travel more before starting introduced Morgan to a new world of expeditions and researching animals graduate school. that few have ever seen in person. “I never thought I’d be into caving or Her trips have had their fair share of danger. JOHNCARROLL.ORG 9 Remembering Josh Hamer ’19

After a fatal accident that took the life of sophomore Josh Hamer, the John Carroll community found many ways to remember Josh, support the Hamer family and help each other heal. Hundreds attended a candle-light prayer vigil and even more attended his wake and funeral. After dealing with the loss of Josh, two students felt the Holy Spirit stirring inside them and made the decision to be baptized in Christ. In a speech before the final school-wide Mass, Ashley Schwartz ’18 dedicated her Baptism, which would happen during that Mass, to Josh and the Hamer family. “Although this death was one of most heartbreaking things to go through, it pushed me right towards God and towards faith,” she said. Ashley also received her first Holy Communion at that Mass. To assist the Hamer family, the John Carroll community raised over $35,000 to pay for Josh’s funeral and burial expenses, with anything above the cost going towards a scholarship in his name. Over $10,000 of that amount was raised thanks to the Aberdeen IronBirds, who hosted a baseball game between Gilman and John Carroll at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium. Donations were accepted at the gates, and the IronBirds donated the proceeds from their concession sales that night. To honor Josh, the IronBirds presented the Hamer family with a personalized IronBirds jersey. They will also hang Josh’s jersey in the main concourse and wear a commemorative patch throughout the 2017 season. The John Carroll Parent Association also honored Josh by donating a flag pole and flags, which were installed at the John Carroll baseball field in Josh’s memory.

Josh Hamer ’19

Ashley Schwartz ’18 was initiated into the Catholic Church during her Baptism and first Holy Communion at the last school-wide Mass of the year, celebrated by Fr. Matt Buening. She dedicated her Baptism in memory of Josh Hamer.

JOHNCARROLL.ORG 25 2015–16 ANNUAL REPORT For gifts made July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016

26 CONNECTIONS MAGAZINE • Spring 2017 THANK YOU!

Welcome to the 2015–16 Annual Report of The John Carroll School. This report honors and celebrates the individuals and organizations whose support in the form of cash gifts or pledge payments received July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 has helped John Carroll continue to fulfill our mission and meet our vision. Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to continue preparing almost 700 students for college and the rest of their lives by educating them spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially.

As our student athletes continue to reap the benefits of the success of the Lighting the Way Capital Campaign by competing on two beautiful turf fields, 2016 was a championship year for our Men’s JV and Varsity Lacrosse teams along with our Women’s Field Hockey team! Lighting the Way also allowed us the addition of air-conditioning in the Patriot Café as well as our 600- seat performing arts auditorium. This enabled us to host our first ever Summer Community Theater production of “The Sound of Music” featuring John Carroll’s own Director of Performing Arts, Julie Parrish, as Maria.

As we look ahead to celebrating the 50th graduating class in our history, our vision is firmly focused on the future of the school. As we prepare to embark on Phase II of our Master Plan, we are committed to transforming our Academic Wing, so that John 2015–16 ANNUAL REPORT Carroll’s facilities match the high-quality academic rigor and reputation of our teachers and students. For gifts made July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 We hope that we can continue to count on your generous support! Your charitable contributions to both our annual campaign, as well as our capital improvements, make it possible to provide our students an extraordinary education both in and out of the classroom.
