Remote Learning Guide For Families Introduction Remote Learning website and Expectations: As part of our ongoing provision to ensure students have access to the full curriculum in all circumstances, we have launched the Stationers’ Crown Woods Remote Learning website. This is a great resource which has been created to work alongside teaching within the classroom. It highlights how we will be developing our remote learning provision this academic year and in turn what edu- cational technology will be utilised by students in the classroom and at home. For example, the SCWA Remote Learning web page provides all the resources needed to access the relevant Google Classrooms for all subject areas including their classroom codes. It also provides all students with the links to the Accelerated Reading Pro- gramme, MyOn (a digital library), PSHE programme, knowledge organisers and pastoral support. This guide is designed to support both students and parents/careers with this new way of working. We hope that the information it provides is useful and that it leaves you well-placed to continue to support your child throughout the course of this academic year. If you have any questions about the Remote Learning provision currently in place, please contact your son/daughter’s form tutor or curriculum lead via the established communication paths. In this guide you will find the following: • Instructions for students learning remotely • How to use Google Classroom and other Google Apps • How to create your child’s ‘classroom at home’ • The importance of reading at home • Free Digital Learning websites that may support online learning • Top Tips for maintaining a healthy mind • Working on Oracy- to support your child’s learning I thank you for your ongoing support in this matter and will be sure to update you of any future changes to our online provision. Elizabeth Lymer, Director of Teaching and Learning Helpful Guidance Instructions for students learning remotely: Google classrooms have been created for all subject areas and all students have been invited to join. Training on how to utilise Google Classroom and participate in ‘live lessons’ has been provided to all students via wellbeing or in ICT sessions. All classwork and homework will be uploaded to their subject classrooms. Students who are self-isolating and are able to work are expected to log onto their Google Classroom account every day and follow their normal timetable. This will involve going into each subject classroom and completing the work set and reviewing the resources available. If students complete all the work then they should consolidate their understanding of subject matter by referring to the knowledge organisers which are available on the SCWA curriculum page at www.scwa.org.uk Students can also access other useful educational websites on the SCWA Remote Learning website or at the end of this guide. If your child is learning remotely as a result of the school partially or fully closing due to COVID-19 then it is expected that all students follow their normal timetable through Google Classroom. Tutor time and subject lessons will be delivered live where possible via Google Meet. Students can access both via the ‘Meet link’ which is present within each of their Google Classrooms. Students are expected to be on time to each lesson, participate fully and complete all work set to a good standard. How to use Google Classroom and Google Apps How does my child sign into Google Classroom? To access Google Classroom, your child will first have to log in to their school Gmail account. The Google Apps for Education will not work from any external email account. Google Classroom can then be accessed via the Google Apps icon which can be found at the top right of the web browser. If you bookmark the page in your browser then it will be easy to find the next time. For a step by step guide to using Google Classroom, click here to watch a short instructional video. How do I access Google Classroom as a parent/carer? Parents/Careers do not have a login to be able to access their child’s google classroom. We recommend sitting down with your child and walking through their ‘Classroom’ with them to discuss their learning, their upcoming assignments, classwork and any notifications from teachers. Although you cannot join your child’s google classrooms you can receive a daily or weekly guardian email summary. Guardian email summaries include: • Missing work – worked not turned in when the summary was sent • Upcoming work – work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails) • Class activity – announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers. (Note: Guardians who sign up for email summaries cannot see the Stream, Classwork, People or Grades pages in Classroom) If you wish to receive a guardian email summary then please email your child’s subject teachers who will send you an invitation. You will then have the option of receiving daily or weekly summaries. You can unsubscribe at any time. How does my child join a ‘live lesson’ If the school is partially or fully closed then teachers will deliver ‘live lessons’ via Google Classroom. ‘Live lessons’ will be scheduled according to the students normal time table. To join a ‘live lesson’ students are to go into the subject Google Classroom and click on the ‘Meet link’. This can be found within the ‘theme’ at the top of the ‘Stream’ page. The ‘Meet link’ code will be different for every class. Students are expected to be on time to ‘live lessons’, wear appropriate clothing and behave in line with school policy. All ‘live lessons’ will be recorded and uploaded on to the ‘Classwork tab’ in the Google Classroom for students to access. This will support students who may share a device and not always be able to attend ‘live lessons’. Please note that if the teacher is unable to deliver a ‘live lesson’ then pre-recorded lessons will be provided instead. These will be uploaded on to the ‘Classwork tab’ in the Google Classroom. Where can I view my child’s assignments and work that needs to be submitted? Option 1: To view all assignments (including late or missing work) assigned to your child, with their due dates, you can click on the ‘To do’ tab in the Google Classroom homepage. Option 2: Alternately you can individually select a class and check under either the ‘Stream’ or the ‘Classwork’ page for upcoming assignments. Option 3: As previously highlighted there is no parental log-in to Google Classroom but guardian summaries will be available and can provide a weekly report of your child’s progress. G Suite for Education G suite for Education is a set of free Google tools and services that are tailored for schools and remote learning. It includes Gmail, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and Google Drive (and many more apps). The aforementioned tools enable teachers and students to connect, collaborate, provide and receive feedback. It allows your child to learn and access the curriculum anywhere, anytime and on any device. Google Classroom Google Classroom is where your child can find revision resources, all of their assignments, grades and feedback, and communicate directly with their teacher. As a guardian, you can opt into guardian summaries to monitor your child’s progress. Google Meet Google Meet is a secure video conferencing platform where teachers can deliver ‘live lessons’. Students can join a Google Meet (‘live lesson’) by clicking on the ‘Meet link’ on the ‘Stream’ page within the subject classroom. It will be utilised by all subject teachers if students are directed to learn remotely (e.g. as a result of partial or full closure of school due to COVID-19). Meet can be used to recreate the experience of your child being in class to keep them learning. Gmail School Gmail accounts have been created for all SCWA students. Students can use Gmail accounts to contact or share work with their teachers or to access all the other Google Apps e.g. Google Classroom, Google Docs etc. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides Using G Suite tools like Docs, Sheets and Slides, your child can create documents, spreadsheets, or presentations that they can share with others, receive feedback on through comments, and edit in real time--with it all being saved automatically in their Google Drive. Google Forms Forms are often used by teachers for creating quizzes, parent feedback surveys, or even field trip forms. Your child may also use Forms for in-class activities like creating a poll, or sending out a survey to their class Google Drive Drive is your child’s virtual backpack, where they can hold all of their assignments, projects, and notes online. It saves automatically, can be shared with others, and is accessible from any device--all they have to do is login to their school Google account! How to create your child’s ‘classroom at home’ Go to bed at a reasonable time. Don’t underestimate the importance of those eight hours of sleep every night! Getting a good night’s rest will sharpen your focus and improve your working memory. Start the day well. Ensure your child has a healthy breakfast as it will boost their attention span, concentration and memory – it will help them learn. Set up a learning routine and structure. Students should follow their normal school timetable if learning remotely – in terms of learning and breaks. Would recommend having their time table on display so both students and parents/careers can refer to it.
