International Student Day Tuesday 21st February 2012

Some events require prior booking by emailing [email protected] with your name and the events that you would like to attend. Transport details for each event will then be sent on to you. The deadline for all bookings is Saturday 18th February at 5pm.

8.00am – 9.00am International Student Breakfast Free of Charge

This event is free and will take place in the Bistro, Student Centre, Campus. There will be a selection of food from various countries. Limited numbers so please book before deadline.

9.00am – 11.00am Visit to Blackrock Castle Observatory Free of Charge “Blackrock Castle Observatory (BCO) is a unique partnership between City Council and CIT that houses Ireland’s first fully- interactive science centre, built around the theme of astronomy, and a working astronomical observatory. Since opening its doors in August 2007, the site has welcomed almost 200,000 visitors and has been recognised for its excellence with six national and international awards.” A guided tour of this facility will be provided. Transport to and from the event will be provided. Limited numbers so please book before deadline.

11.00am – 13.00pm International Students Cultural Exhibition Stands representing various countries will be on display in the main corridor of the Bishopstown Campus. Volunteers will be required. If interested in participating, please contact the International Student Society – email address provided above. Live streaming of this event will take place so don’t forget to tell your family and friends at home!

13.00pm – 14.00pm International Themed Lunches in the Main Canteen

14.00pm – 16.00pm Visit to National Maritime College of Ireland Free of Charge NMCI is a facility built on a 10 acre waterside campus. It was purpose built to serve the training requirements of the School of Nautical Studies, Cork Institute of Technology and the Irish Naval Service. A Guided Tour of the NMCI will include a tour of the Ship and Ocean Simulator, Environmental Pool, Jetty and Fire-fighting Units, and the World Class Engineering Laboratories. Transport to and from the event will be provided. Limited numbers so please book before deadline.

16.00pm – 17.00pm Hurling & Football ‘taster session’ with CORK GAA stars Free of charge Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of our national sports with guidance from some of Cork’s finest sporting heroes. This event will take place in our Stadium Pitch, located on the Bishopstown Campus! Limited numbers so please book before deadline.

17.00pm – 18.00pm €urostar – CIT’s finest Singing Talent Free of Charge Come and support CIT’s up and coming singing stars. The competition will have cover and original entries and will take place in the Rory Gallagher Performance Theatre, located on the CIT Bishopstown Campus. The winners of the two categories will represent CIT nationally. Entry is free for all international students.

18.45pm – 20.45pm Céili and Irish Dancing Display in Free of Charge This event will take place in the Student Centre, UCC. Transport to and from the event will be provided. This event is been organised by Education in Ireland. Please book before deadline if you would like to avail of transport.

21.00pm – LATE!!! ‘International Art after Dark Party’ Free of Charge Join us for a night-time gathering at CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery where we’ll wind down after an action packed day of events with some music, light bites and a glass of wine. Housed in a beautiful former grain store in the heart of Cork city, the gallery hosts a wide variety of exhibitions by national and international artists. Currently on display here is drawnOVERdrawn; a selection of drawings, prints and video works by four US artists and professors and curated by CIT CCAD lecturer James L Hayes. We look forward to seeing you there! Buses will leave from UCC and CIT for this event. Limited numbers so please book before deadline.

World Cup (5-a-side) Soccer Competition

A World Cup (5-a-side) Soccer Competition with CIT, UCC, Griffith College and the English Language Schools has also been organised by Education in Ireland and the participating Colleges. This event will take place in the week leading up to International Student Day. For more information and/or to enter, email Eric Marah at [email protected]. Prizes will include cash, vouchers, hoodies, medals and a cup!

60-90 second Video Competition

This competition is based on the theme ‘Studying in Ireland – Your Story’. Entries must be submitted to the Societies Office, Bishopstown Campus, CIT. All videos will be posted up on YouTube and there will be prizes for the videos that receive the most hits. The CIT entry that receives the most hits will receive an iPad. This event is organised by Education in Ireland and the participating Colleges.
