Fireside Poets The Fireside Poets -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, , and -- got their nickname because their works were widely read as family entertainment at American firesides. The four poets chose uniquely American settings but drew heavily on English tradition for their themes, meter, and imagery. The Fireside Poets were literary giants in their day and ranked for decades among America’s best-loved poets.
