U.S. Port Report The Top 20 U.S. Ocean Ports by Import Volume Annual Ranking of Ports by Volume in Trade

Reporting the latest available annual data from the U.S. Census and Bills of Lading with cumulative trade values over the preceding year and comparisons with previous years. Data provided to end of 2017, the latest full year of data. Trade Report & Analysis

ABOUT THIS REPORT: Designed as a reference on U.S. import trade for port authorities, carriers, logistics providers, importers and shippers, this report ranks the top 20 U.S. maritime ports by import volumes, measured in Twenty-foot Equivilant Units (TEU), the standard measure of containerized cargo, for 2017.

ABOUT THE DATA The data source for this report is Descartes Datamyne, provider of the world’s largest searchable trade database covering the global commerce of 230 markets across 5 continents. The U.S. ports data in this report has been gathered by Descartes Datamyne from bills of lading (BoLs) that document inbound ocean shipments and are filed with U.S. Customs Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). TEU volumes reported are derived from bills of lading, as released by U.S. Customs, excluding empty containers and shipments with freight remaining on board (FROB). The value of imports is as reported by U.S. Census. Countries of origin reported are the countries from which shipments departed bound for the United States. Leading importers are the companies identified as consignees on bills and taking delivery on the highest volumes of imports as measured in TEUs. (Note that companies have a legal right to remove their names from publicly released trade records: Some companies do exercise that right, and so will not appear in the data.) Master carriers are the top shipping lines ranked by TEUs as reported on the bills of lading. Number of shipments reported is the number of bills of lading.

The Port of Tacoma, after showing a strong 8.9 percent increase in import volume in 2016, fell 15.9 percent in 2017. This drop in Tacoma is offset by a 17.8 percent increase in volume by its sister port in the Northwest Seaport Alliance, the Port of Seattle. Since merging in 2015, the two ports have collectively seen an increase in volume by 10.9 percent.

The Port of Mobile, a newcomer to the top 20 list, saw its import volume increased 15.5 percent as the port completed Phase 2 of its five-part expansion project. The multi-billion-dollar long- term plan is designed to increase the port’s throughput volume to 1.5 million TEUs. The $49.5 million, Phase 3, expansion was approved in late 2017 with specific plans for a 400 ft. dock extension and Post-Panamax crane rails.

The Port of Philadelphia saw the largest increase in year-over-year import volume among the top U.S. ports. Driven in part by a both $300 million expansion and the completion of the deepening of the Delaware River channel, the import volume into Philadelphia increased 21.9 percent in 2017. The large influx of imports can be also be attributed to new shipping services being provided at the port, including the new five carrier alliance of “K” Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Yang Ming Marine Transport, and Hapag-Lloyd.

In 2015, the Port of Miami completed an expansion of its Biscayne Bay and the Port of Miami Tunnel Project. We’ve yet to see the first major benefits of that expansion, with import volumes remaining stagnant at 430,000 TEUs in 2017 after only a moderate 2.3 percent gain in 2016.
