It may therefore seem surprising that comedy writer David Croft chose exactly this period as a background for his most successful situation comedies. However, the huge success of the series Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo! suggests that he managed to create sitcoms that are entertaining for wide audience and not offensive despite their connection to the Second World War. This thesis focuses on two of David Croft‟s sitcoms, Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo!. The firstly mentioned sitcom was created in cooperation with Jimmy Perry and ran on BBC1 almost ten years from 1968 to 1977. -

Dear Friends Are you afraid of the dark? Many of us find it hard to sleep or to be in the dark. Fear of the dark is not only restricted to the children. Most of us would sensibly avoid certain places in the dark, for fear of what, or who might be lurking there. I am always reminded of the breath-taking moments at the beginning of the Advent service in our Churches each year, when every light is extinguished. The darkness closes around you, isolating you from many other people around you, and plunging you into a void. You are conscious of the fears and terrors of the dark, until one tiny candle is lit at the door. That flame is enough to restore hope and security. Soon others are lit, until the whole Church building blazes with light. The service, “From Darkness to Light” is symbolic of what we celebrate at Christmas time, the coming of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World to cast away darkness. Isaiah many years ago proclaimed God’s word and said: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on these lights have shined. -

Character of Area Study
Watford Character of Area Study Adopted December 2011 0B1.0 Introduction The Borough of Watford is a well established urban centre in West Hertfordshire that contains a diverse patchwork of areas reflecting different types of built form. These character areas provide the spatial framework for local neighbourhoods and reflect the multifunctional nature of the town as a location for employment, leisure, study and residential provision. Although these areas provide a network of urban form, rich in “place identity”, they remain at risk of degradation from the pressures of new development. There is therefore a need to identify the Borough’s existing character areas and to provide a reference for guiding contextually responsive development that reinforces local character. 2.0 Urban Conservation Strategy 2.1 The need for a comprehensive study identifying character areas within the Borough was set out in the Council’s Urban Conservation Strategy, as detailed in the Watford District Plan 2000 (adopted 2003). The Urban Conservation Strategy sets out to deliver a package of different documents covering the various heritage assets within the town, including: conservation areas, Statutory Listed Buildings, Locally Listed Buildings and archaeology. The Character of the Area Study provides an overarching resource on urban form for the whole Borough and not just areas or buildings that are designated as heritage assets and referred to in the District Plan and the Urban Conservation Strategy. 2.2 The Watford District Plan 2000 and the related Supplementary Planning Guidance Note 28 (adopted 2003) includes information on Historic Environment Character Zones in Watford. This map based resource provides general information on the historical character zones that exist within the Borough and their archaeological potential. -

93 ANETTE PANKRATZ Mention the War: British Sitcoms and Military Masculinity 1. Introduction "Military virtues such as aggression, strength, courage and endurance have repeatedly been defined as the natural and inherent qualities of manhood" and "the soldier has become the quintessential figure of masculinity" (Dawson 1994, 1; cf. Braun 1996, 180; Connell 2005, 73, 213). Despite the assertive tone of these statements, military masculinity is fraught with contradictions and paradoxes. Soldiering, especially the killing of people in combat, can be seen as morally ambiguous (Braun 1996, 180). More importantly, the ideal type of military masculinity can never be reached and is enmeshed in a "dense web of double binds" (Belkin 2012, 4), that is, in disciplinary rituals that address soldiers as "girls" or "poofs" or in exercises that infantilise and feminise them (Belkin 2012, 33). Since the abolishment of National Service in 1961, serving in the army has become a very specialised occupation for a minority of the population in Britain and the warrior hero has been superseded by figures such as the "entrepreneurial individual" (Connell 2005, 254). (British) situation comedies featuring soldiers, from The Army Game (ITV, 1957- 1966) to Bluestone 42 (BBC, 2013-2015), broach this field of tensions with comic intent. They operate with incongruity between the exemplary figure of the warrior hero and its real-life performance, either by turning the norm upside down or by exaggerating and stereotyping it. The implicit juxtaposition of the ideal and its comic Other also puts into play different versions of masculinity, from the anxiously overt or the supposedly 'normal' to the deficient or explicitly dissident. -

This ended a long history as one of the village’s original beer shops, later developing into a public house, which played such an important and interesting role in the development, character and life of the village. This photograph was taken from the Auction Sale Brochure. Lacey Green is not mentioned in the Domesday Book like some other villages in the area, so it cannot claim to be an ancient settlement. -

Although we hope all the listed items will be available on the night, we cannot guarantee that they all will be, nor that all the lots will be constituted as shown. All dimensions are approximate and are in centimetres (2.54cm to the inch for those who can't remember). Comments on the condition of the items are subjective, therefore close viewing of the lots on the night is strongly recommended. XX in the right hand margin indicates good or very good condition; X some marking/poor condition; blank indicates very poor condition; o unseen. PURCHASE OF LOTS To reduce the need for items to be paid for individually, we propose to keep a record of each purchase so that all lots bought can be collected and paid for either during the intervals or at the end. In order for this to operate smoothly we would ask all bidders to register for a bidder’s number and to show that after a successful bid. Cheques will only be accepted if supported by a bankers' card and can only be taken up to the relevant maximum indicated on the card. We are also able to accept payment by Visa/Mastercard credit cards.
