Academic & Pastoral Arrangements

199 applicants sought admission to the College at year 8. 123 pupils were admitted to Year 8, divided into five mixed ability classes according to choice of languages and friendship groups. At Key Stage 3 class sizes range from 20 to 25 in number; at Key Stage 4, from 14 to 25, streamed only for some classes in Additional Mathematics at GCSE; and at A-Level, class sizes range from 9 to 20.

Lumen Christi College continues to offer the full Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4. Learning for Life and Work was again offered in the GCSE curriculum using the collapsed timetable model. At Key Stage 4 all but one student took a minimum of nine and some students took a maximum of thirteen GCSEs while, at Sixth Form, all but two students took at least three A-Levels.

The College is a member of the Foyle Learning Community with links to fifteen post-primary schools in the area allowing access for post-16 students to a range of subjects in addition to those taught on site in the college. In the past year fourteen of our students attended St Cecilia’s College, four to study PE at A- Level, nine studied AS PE and one studied AS Drama. One of our students studied AS Engineering and one A-Level Engineering in St Mary’s College. Eleven students from local schools (St Mary’s College, St Joseph’s College and St Cecilia’s College) attended classes at Lumen Christi in Irish, Spanish, Geography, History, Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. The college offered access to 35 subjects at A-Level this year.

Parents Information

Ongoing and updated information for parents on all aspects of college life is available on-line on the school website: www.lumenchristicollege.co.uk. This contains a newsletter, staffing and pupil information, admissions criteria, complaints procedures and a wide range of policy documents on areas such as curriculum and pastoral provision, discipline, child protection, drugs awareness and sex education. Policy documents are also available in written copy to parents on request to the school office and the School Development Plan is available for inspection by parents in the school.

Parents Information Evenings were held for Years 8, 11 and 13 and afforded parents an opportunity to gain information required on a wide range of issues including careers advice, subject choices, relationships and sexuality education programme, child protection, special educational provision, study skills, drugs awareness and preparation for university.

Year 8 pupils and their parents attended Welcome interviews in June and received copies of our Welcome Booklet.

One formal complaint was lodged by a parent to the Board of Governors on the issue of admissions and has been dealt with through the Complaints Procedures.

2012-13 was another very active year for the Lumen Christi Parents Association. In December they organised a highly successful Christmas Fayre which allowed our very enterprising Year 8 & 9 LLW classes to show off their creativity and entrepreneurial skills. In February, members attended the annual Open Day and responded to questions asked by visiting parents and children. In March, members of the Association were once again to the fore in providing hospitality for those attending the Spring Concert. In June the PTA organised a family quiz evening in the school canteen. Financial support from the Association went this year to a wide range of causes including the NW SciFest competition, purchasing soccer footballs for pupil use at lunchtime and sponsorship for the pupils participating in the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. All in all, 2012-13 proved to be a very satisfying and productive year for this very dedicated and hardworking group. Their work is very much appreciated by the Board and the entire school community.

Premises Pupil facilities have been significantly enhanced through the building of the new Sixth Form Centre, seeing the fruition of a key priority for the college over many years. The refurbishment of classroom and office space was also undertaken. During the summer, the RE and Art corridors were repainted and Language Room 7, RE 3 & Maths 3 refurbished. Music Technology has been upgraded with installation of a suite of APPLEMAC computers and redecorating of the room. Draft proofing of windows and roof insulation has been carried out and the College heating system has also been upgraded. New entrance doors have been fitted to the school buildings at Reception and Art department.

Arrangements for the Security of Staff and Pupils An emergency evacuation drill was conducted in the third term. To improve Health & Safety in the school grounds, bollards have been erected at the bottom of the driveway to prevent traffic using this area as a turning bay. We also employed a permanent supervisor to control the flow of traffic in the morning. We are currently negotiating with DENI to address the following Health and Safety issues: works to internal and external stairs, landings, etc to meet safety and DDA standards; works to external metal escape stairs from gable of third storey senior house building; fire door maintenance and updating of fire alarm system. The fire alarm is checked weekly. All students have access to an independent counseling service (New Life) as does the College’s teaching and support staff.

The department completed the 2012/13 year with the annual end of year exhibition in the Sixth Form Study Hall. Every GCSE, AS & A2 art student was represented with at least one piece of work. The exhibition was considered to be a great success by all involved. The department received support for the event from the PTA in terms of hospitality and we are very grateful for this generous contribution.

Our GCSE and A-Level Art examination results were particularly strong. In all cases results exceed grammar school averages for Northern Ireland and though A2 examination results were disappointing, all students secured A-B grades. AQA GCSE Photography course which was introduced in 2010/11 is now very well embedded into the department. Eight students completed the course this year achieving 6 A* and 2 A grades. Mr Kerr decided this year to begin the GCSE Photography course for 2013/14 in May of 2013 in order to allow more time to be devoted to the course. The course has also been opened to the current Year 10 pupils. Approximately 25 students have registered interest thus far. Mr Kerr, as last year, undertook a successful period as a GCSE moderator. Miss Mc Nabb also continued her work as an AS moderator.

The Department was delighted with the excellent set of results the students achieved at GCSE and A2 considering this was the first intake sitting the new specification at GCSE Double and Triple Award. Both Miss King and Miss Hughes have continued to participate in the Stranmillis Programme mentoring student teachers. Miss King used her skills and experience as a Biology teacher to deliver Health Education as a whole school initiative. We are also delighted that Seamus Flynn was awarded 1st Place in N. Ireland for his performance in A Level Biology.

The examination results achieved in Applied Business in 2013 compare most favourably with the NI grammar school outcomes. The Business Studies department achieved a grade 1 ALPS score putting the department in the top 1% of Business Departments in the UK in terms of value-added. The students in year 14 organised and ran their own company in designing ‘Lumen Thermal Mugs’. The profits from the company and a raffle they organised were donated to Foyle Hospice.

We are also delighted that Aaron Mc Ivor was awarded 1st Place in N. Ireland for his performance in A Level Applied Business Studies and Ryan Higgins was awarded 2nd Place.

The Drama Department In the academic year 2012-2013, the drama department continued to deliver the revised scheme of work. Pupil evaluations of each unit of work show that the changes made are much more relevant to the young people studying drama and so provided a more enriching experience. During the year, the scheme of work was evaluated by the teacher and any further changes will be implemented in the academic year 2013-2014. The changes in the scheme of work will be made in light of the delivery of drama changing from Year 10 to Year 9. In the final term, the teacher researched new activities to ensure tasks are applicable to Year 9. Simultaneously, planning started to deliver the NI Curriculum to the current Year 10 group via collapsed timetables throughout the year. Research was carried out regarding the introduction of drama at GCSE level in the academic year beginning 2014. In conjunction with the English department, the drama department organised a theatre trip. This involved all Year8 students who enjoyed a production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at The Playhouse Theatre, Derry. Watching a live performance is an essential component of drama at Key Stage 3.

Year 8 pupils were also treated to a petit déjeuner français of croissants, pain au chocolat and chocolat chaud on that day.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 16

Year 8 and 9 pupils also started the academic year off with a theatrical performance of “Les Filles” performed by the ever popular Theatre Lote group. Robert Roarty (8D) particularly enjoyed the event as he was invited on stage by the actors to take part in one of the scenes!

In November, 5 A2 French students; Sorcha Brady, Eva Doherty Roe, Niall Mallon, Leah Mc Cready and Eimear Mc Garrigle were selected to participate in the Juvenes Translatores Translation Competition organised by the European Commission. The competition aims to encourage those who have an interest in learning foreign languages and to raise awareness about translation studies and the ever growing need for translators throughout Europe. The competition involved a 2hour translation task (French- English). All 5 students received highly commended certificates for their participation in the event.

During the Easter break, Mrs Coyle and Miss Mc Menamin hosted “A” level revision classes in the school. Mrs Coyle took responsibility for A2 pupils and Miss Mc Menamin for AS students. Attendance at these was high and pupils commented on how worthwhile the support was leading up to the exam period. This will now become a regular event.

In April, 3 Year 8 pupils; Ronan Dale, Hannah Mc Laughlin and Jenny Mc Laughlin, accompanied by Madame Mc Menamin attended a French story-telling workshop at Foyle College. Pupils from both schools participated in group activities based on the famous children’s story La Chenille Affamée (The Hungry Caterpillar). Pupils also got the opportunity to enjoy a small drama performed by students in Year 9 at Foyle College based on Monsieur Rapide et Monsieur Lent (Mr Busy and Mr Slow) from the Mr Men range of books. The pupils involved really enjoyed the experience and Lumen Christi College French Department hopes to host a similar event next year.

The focus for the History Department in 2012/13 lay in the implementation of the Pupil Tracking System at Key Stage 5 in order monitor pupil progress. This proved very beneficial in identifying those pupils who were having difficulties with the subject and enabled us to put in place measures to assist these pupils.

Dr A Heaney and Mrs Carlisle delivered two Democracy days to the Year 11 students as part of the KS4 LLW programme.

The members of the Department remain committed to their own professional development. Mrs D Carlisle attended courses on the delivery of the new GCSE Controlled Assessment. Mr D Hegarty attended a course on the delivery of the GCSE Controlled Assessment and continues to be an A Level History examiner.

History continues to be a popular subject within Lumen Christi with a strong student uptake at both GCSE and A Level. Pupil performance at both GCSE and A Level remains well above the N. I. grammar school average and is testament to the hard work and dedication of all the members of the History Department. A number of our Year 14 leavers are going on to pursue history courses at University. We are particularly delighted that Helen Brady was awarded 1st Place in N. Charities Involvement Shoebox Appeal Given the success in previous years, the Shoebox Appeal was extended to the entire College community in October 2012. The appeal was launched in assemblies and in Form Classes where Form Tutors showed a short DVD highlighting the life-changing impact that the Shoeboxes have

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 23 on the children that receive them. This year in excess of 300 filled shoeboxes were collected from across the year groups and a most impressive displayed was found on our main corridor. Sharon Jack from Operation Christmas Child collected the shoeboxes and was amazed at the size of the donation from Lumen Christi College. She assured us that the shoeboxes would continue to make such a difference to children at Christmas time and thanked all pupils, parents and staff for continuing to bring the ‘Light of Christ’ to others.

Christmas Fayre All year 8 classes organised a ‘bring and buy’ stall for the annual Christmas Fayre. Pupils collected items, priced them and then ran the stall on the night. Pupils were encouraged to develop their entrepreneurial spirit so as to make their stall stand out from the others. The event instilled a real sense of community spirit and all pupils had great fun preparing and running the stalls.

Hamper Appeal Every year early in December we ask the students of each form group to put together a food hamper. The hampers are then displayed outside the school chapel before being passed on to the Society of St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army. The hampers are then distributed to members of the local community who struggle during the Christmas period when their finances can be severely stretched. The response and generosity of our students and their parents is truly overwhelming and greatly appreciated by those who benefit from this traditional event.

This year was a challenging and exciting one for all involved in the Chaplaincy life of the College. It was a time for consolidating the large amount of work and the many initiatives that have become a central part of College life. There was a restructuring of the Liturgy Prefect Team. Due to the commitment of a large number of these senior students, the Morning Prayer initiative continued to flourish, we created a new retreat for Year 9, and most significantly, we hosted a series of faith talks for our parents.

With our tradition of First Friday Mass continuing, we also celebrated a number of Seasonal Masses. We celebrated weekly mass during Advent and Lent and ended the year for our senior students with our Leavers’ Mass. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to Rev Francis Bradley and the many priests from the Diocese of Derry who continue to support us in every way they can. Our congratulations were extended to Fr Bradley on his appointment as Diocesan Administrator.

Our annual day of Reconciliation was held during Lent. This year we provided the sacrament for all students. We were supported by twenty three priests from the Diocese.

Our Retreat Programme continued with Year 13 spending the day in the spirit of the Celtic Saints in the Iosas Centre. Our Year 10 group made the annual journey to Ards Friary, Co. Donegal. The weather was stunning and the photographs led people to believe that we had Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 37 retreated to the Bahamas. The Years 11, 12 and 14 groups had one day retreats in the Carmelite Retreat Centre, Termonbacca, with the latter two groups spending the day with the vibrant and energising NET Ireland Team. The Year 8 group spent a prayerful day in June under the direction of Miss Niamh Grant from the Iosas Centre. Most significantly, we created a new retreat for Year 9 entitled, Life Makes Faith Necessary. We brought this retreat to the Carmelite Retreat Centre. It proved to be a huge success. Our thanks extend to the many teachers who give of their time and talents to facilitate this programme of retreats. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful group.

The Year 12 group attended the Life Conference in October.

Sixth Form students took part in a series of faith seminars on the themes of Human Life and Catholic Apologetics.

We continued the tradition of having the Christmas Carol Service in the Long Tower Church. This year we added a number of poignant reflections.

Each day throughout the year the College Chapel was the venue for Adoration and Morning Prayer. The commitment of those in attendance was so uplifting! A special word of thanks goes to the Key Stage 3 students and the Year 13s and 14s who turned out each morning in huge numbers on hearing the bell.

The School Chaplaincy service continues to provide counselling for our students. We enjoy the professional support of counsellors from New Life (DENI) and NWIFHE. This year dozens of students benefited from this support.

We continued our journey with the North West Inter-Faith Forum, a group that promotes inclusion, tolerance and understanding throughout our city.

A new initiative this year saw a group of our parents attend an Adult Faith Programme. This was hosted with the support of our Senior Liturgy Prefect Team. The students brought a wonderfully refreshing dimension to the seminars and their commitment is to be highly commended. The Programme ran over a period of six months.

The academic year 2012 - 2013 saw the appointment of Mr Mark Smyth as Co-ordinator of Key Stage 3 Science. The Science Club members attended SciFest Northwest, Sentinus Young Innovators in Belfast, BT Young Scientist in Dublin and the Big Bang Science Fair in London. The pupils had outstanding success and won awards at all events. In the recent SciFest Northwest event our students scooped all the major awards. Sisters Donna and Sinead Harkin were awarded — best overall project and will now travel to Trinity College Dublin in November to compete in the All Ireland Final. Mrs. Gill coordinates the Northwest SciFest Festival in collaboration with Mr. Mark Logue Head of Science at St Mary’s College.

Mrs. Gill delivered a workshop at the ASE Conference in June at St Mary’s University College, Belfast. The topic was ‘Running a Successful Science Club’. In light of these extraordinary achievements, the Science Club was named Club of the Year at the Junior Prize giving and it was a fitting reward for the hard work and dedication of all the students involved and the co-ordinator Mrs Gill.

The Science Department also took part in the annual Stranmillis project where student teachers from the College spend 2 days in school observing lessons, receiving planning advice and then delivering a lesson of their own. This continues to be a great professional development opportunity for our staff.

Our exam results last year at A2 and GCSE continue to be a source of encouragement for us, as the results are well above the N. Ireland Grammar School averages. We also recognise that huge effort is needed to maintain and build on these in the coming year. The significant increase in numbers of pupils choosing Spanish over the past few years at GCSE and A-Level is also being maintained. It is heartening to see that several students have chosen to continue studying Spanish at University.

We had our fifth annual Key Stage 3 Spanish quiz for LASCO during March. The quiz is very popular with the students who donate generously and recognise the importance of helping this Derry based charity. The event is now part of the school calendar and as well as practising their Spanish, pupils gain an increasing awareness of social and poverty issues in the Hispanic World.

In September, we hosted Onatti Spanish Theatre Company who performed “Primera Cita,” which is a comedy aimed at younger students of Spanish. This afforded the pupils in years 9 and 10 the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and setting, and they were delighted at how much Spanish they understood.

Judging by the students’ and parents’ reaction, the highlight of the year was our October 2012 Cultural trip to Barcelona. Forty year 10 pupils travelled to Barcelona accompanied by Mr Begley, Miss Hamilton, Mr Mc Cullagh, Mrs Harkin and Mrs Mc Nicholl. The trip was greatly enjoyed by all concerned and we were very proud of the pupils’ behaviour throughout. The trip had a lovely blend of cultural, sporting and fun activities (especially the trip to Port Aventura) catering for all tastes and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, with the extremely pleasant, warm temperatures helping to make this an unforgettable week.

We continued our collaboration with North West Academy this year and secured the voluntary services of señorita María Muelas from Cuenca on a work placement scheme. She was invaluable to us in providing help to GCSE students who, because of significant numbers at A Level, never get the chance to work with a language assistant. María will return to us in October to take up the post of Spanish Language Assistant, as we bid a sad farewell to señorita Noelia González. We thank Noelia for all her hard work and kindness and wish her well as she embarks on the next stage of her career in China.

The year 13 students made their annual trip to Seagate Technology as part of the department’s career guidance programme.

The department also worked collaboratively with Mrs Gill in the Science Department on the Go4SET initiative which is designed to stimulate the interest of young people in STEM. This is an extended activity for pre-GSCE students, delivered by Sentinus in partnership with the Engineering Development Trust. Four year 9 students, Mark Harley, Caoimhin Mc Gowan, Alan Montgomery and Ciaran Taggart completed a project on Rainwater Harvesting. Our link engineer was Roisin Crawford of STEM Aware. A heartfelt thanks to Roisin who was the driving force behind this project, coming in weekly, providing guidance and direction to our pupils.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

Key Stage 3 Extra-curricular Merit System The Extra-Curricular Programme provides pupils with the opportunity to nurture their physical, social and mental well-being and enables the acquisition of skills that equip them better for life. In recognition of the importance of participation in activities, the school operates a Merit System to reward commitment. The large number of recipients for each of the merit awards on offer show how loyal and dedicated pupils have been to their respective clubs in the course of the year, and indeed their appreciation of the range of activities on offer. The Bronze Merit Award, for which there were 78 recipients, is given to those students who show commitment to an activity for a full term. 61 students achieved the Silver Merit Award which is given to pupils who demonstrate complete commitment over two terms. The Gold Merit Award is presented to students who show outstanding commitment to a range of clubs over two terms. 38 students achieved this, and were presented with their awards at Junior Prize-giving.

Sporting Success The dedication, expertise and commitment exhibited by the coaches involved in the Extra- curricular Programme also provides scope for pupils to excel in their chosen disciplines. Lumen Christi enjoyed notable success at local, provincial and national level in a range of sports in the 2012-2013 Season. These included: Athletics & Cross Country, Gaelic Football, Netball, and Swimming. A number of pupils have also excelled in their chosen disciplines outside of the college.

Judo/Boxing Callum Nash continues to excel in his chosen field, Judo. His continued training regime with the Samurai Uladh Judo Club contributes to his success and Callum’s personal achievements this year include a 4 GOLD medals which he won in the UK Judo championships which were held in Crystal Palance, London, Welsh International Judo Competition held in Cardiff, Sportif International Judo Competition, held in England and Northern Ireland Open Judo Competition which was held in Belfast. Callum also acquired a SILVER medal for second place when he fought for the first time in a new weight category – Under 42kg in the Northern Ireland Open Judo Competition in Belfast. In the North West of England Judo Competition which was held in Liverpool in February, Callum won a BRONZE medal in the under 42kg category. He fought a

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 43 close contest but lost in the semi-final when two penalties were awarded against him much to the dismay of the NI camp.

Callum’s sporting interests also include Boxing and he has proven to be quite the competitor since taking up this sport. A member of Ring ABC Boxing Club in Rosemount, he has achieved success at the Ulster Boxing Championships which were held in Pilot’s Row Community Centre, Derry in March 2013. He was victorious in the under 42kg weight category progressing to the All Ireland Boxing Championships at the National Stadium, Dublin in April 2013.

Athletics Cross Country The Ulster Cross Country Championships were held in February 2013 at Mallusk. Representing the College were Zoe Doherty, Ben McCarron, Michael Melarkey, Amy Jackson and Peter Melarkey who all qualified for this competition from the District “C” Championships in Coleraine. Amy Jackson was in excellent form and qualified for the All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships in Jordanstown later in the year where she finished in a top 10 position. Amy is an extremely dedicated athlete and has qualified for this competition every year since she entered the College. Shortly after a great run in this competition Amy was selected to join the Northern Ireland Schools Team.

Track & Field The Year 9 Boys and Girls Athletics Team reached the semi-finals of the Milk Cup Athletics which were held in Coleraine this year. Both teams finished in 3rd place narrowly missing out on a final placing spot. The girls’ team members included Maria Mallett, Erin McDevitt, Orla Hughes, Rioghnach Doran, Fionnuala Flanagan, Laura Hockley and Beth Heaney. The boys’ team consisted of Caelim Kennedy, Matt Doherty, Surafel Flynn, Eoin McParland, Aidan Donaghey, Matthew Mason and Aaron Sweidan. Based upon personal performance on the day, Erin McDevitt and Matthew Mason were selected from the twenty schools in attendance to represent the District “C” team which would compete in the Ulster Finals.

The USSAA District “C” Track and Field Championships were held on 8th May at the Antrim Forum. This year we had the biggest number of competitors and qualifiers representing the College since its involvement in the competition started with 43 students travelling. At Minor level Grainne O’Hara (Yr8) took the GOLD medal for the High Jump and alongside this Niamh

Watson (Yr10) also won the GOLD medal for the High Jump in her age category. Jack McCloskey (Yr12) produced a sprint double victory in both the 100m and 400m picking up two GOLD medals. Claire Doherty (Yr13) continued to excel in the Triple Jump and once again picked up a GOLD medal. Michael Melarkey (Yr12) won the 1500m Steeplechase whilst Amy Jackson (Yr 13) finished in second place in both the 800m and 1500m events. Erin McDevitt (Yr 9) was awarded a SILVER medal for finishing second in the 200m race and Fionnuala Flanagan picked up a BRONZE medal for third place in the Javelin. Overall the College came away from the competition with an excellent haul of medals and alongside this 8 athletes qualifying for the Ulster Championships.

The Ulster Schools Finals were held at the Antrim Forum on 18th May 2013. A total of 8 students travelled to this event and performed exceptionally in their individual disciplines. At the end of the competitions the school came away with 3 GOLD and 3 SILVER medals with four athletes qualifying for the All-Ireland Schools Championships. Once again, Jack McCloskey (Yr12) excelled in the 200m and 400m winning GOLD in both events. Claire Dougherty (Yr 13) took GOLD in the senior girls Triple Jump and Amy Jackson (Yr13) put in valiant performances in the 800m and 1500m by finishing in 2nd and 3rd places respectively taking a SILVER and BRONZE. Michael Melarkey (Yr12) took the SILVER in the Steeplechase event. All the medal winners qualified for the All-Ireland Finals.

On Saturday 1st June 2013, Amy Jackson, Jack McCloskey, Claire Dougherty and Michael Melarkey travelled to Tullamore, Co Offaly for the All-Ireland Irish Schools Finals. Facing some stiff competition with athletes from all around Ireland, all athletes from the College performed extremely well. In the final of the 200m, Jack McCloskey came in 4th place with a personal best of 22.97 secs and in the 400m managed a 5th place position. Amy Jackson took part in the 1500m where she ran a very tactical race to finish with a bronze medal and a seasonal best time. Michael Melarkey ran a fantastic 1500m Steeplechase with a new personal best of 4.48 sec (10 sec off his time at the Ulsters) and finished in 5th place. Claire Dougherty competed in the senior girls Triple Jump where she finished in 3rd place with a jump of 10.75m to secure a BRONZE medal. Claire has been on the winning podium at this event every year since 2008.

Gaelic Football The 2012/2013 season saw Lumen Christi College Gaelic football teams progress further in the Ulster Colleges football competition. The highlight of which was the senior team reaching the final of the BT Nolan Cup.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 45

The Senior Team captained by Andrew Philson, made a slow start in their competition but after finishing a respectable third in the group section, they won both their quarter final and semi final matches very convincingly. In the final they faced the reigning champions, St Joseph’s College, Donaghmore. This was a very close encounter with Lumen leading by two points with a few minutes to go. However, St Joseph’s scored three unanswered points in the final few minutes to win by the narrowest of margins. With only a few Year 14 boys represented on the panel, Lumen Christi will be expected to challenge again next year.

The Year 12 team became the first team in the school’s history to compete at “B” level in Ulster Colleges. This resulted from winning the Ennis Cup two years ago. As expected the level of competition was much tougher but despite not progressing from the group stages, Lumen Christi put in three excellent performances. All the players commented on enjoying the experience and will no doubt have gained experience and knowledge from participation which will make them better players.

The Year 10 team reached the quarter-final stage of their competition after impressing in the group stages. However, they were beaten by a much stronger Edmund Rice team who went on to win the competition.

The Year 9 team competed in the Mallon Cup. After playing three matches in the group stages which resulted in a win, draw and a loss, Lumen faced a playoff to reach the quarter final of the competition. Unfortunately they lost this match. There is some excellent talent in both the Year 9 and Year 10 Gaelic teams which will hopefully achieve success in the coming years.

The Year 8 boys continued to train throughout the year and competed in two competitions involving Derry schools. They performed well which provides encouragement for the future.

Netball We had 4 teams competing at Minor, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Level in both the League and Cup. After the success of previous years, we had a good year once again with the Intermediate Team coming runners up in the Northern Ireland League and Cup competitions.

The minor team, captained by Gemma Mullan won the Derry Area League. Progressing through to the Western Area Finals they were beaten by a team from Loreto Convent, Omagh.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 46

The intermediate team, captained by Blaithnaid Bates won the Derry Area and Western Area Finals. They qualified for the Northern Ireland League and Cup but were narrowly beaten by a team from Our Lady and St Patrick’s College, Knock, Belfast.

The senior team captained by Leah McCready won the Derry Area and the Western Area finals beating Mount Lourdes College, Enniskillen in the final. They progressed to the semi final stages in both N Ireland competitions which is a marvellous achievement for the College and a testament to the strength of Netball in the college.

There was further good news for Lumen Christi College when Blathnaid Bates was once again selected to the final squad of the Northern Ireland Under-17 Netball team.

Thanks must go to Mrs Teresa Gillespie and Ms Jenny Gillespie who trained the Year 8 netball team and facilitate the City of Derry Netball Training in the College.

Soccer After getting a ‘bye’ in the first round of the Northern Ireland Cup, the Under-14 boys played their first match in the second round against a team from Strabane Academy. The venue was the Brandywell Showgrounds where they won with a score line of 3 – 2. In the third round of the competition when achieved success again with a 2 – 1 win in an away match against Ashfield Boys’ High School in Belfast which progressed them to the quarter finals of the competition. At this stage in the competition they faced St Mary’s Christian Boys Grammar School from Belfast at a venue in Mallusk. The final result was a 0 – 0 draw and after extra time failed to recognise a winner. As the competition need to progress it was decided that a penalty decider would be suitable. Unfortunately, the school lost to a score line of 3 – 2 on penalties. The St Mary’s team progressed to be eventual winners of the tournament.

Swimming Swimming in the College continues to excel with our students participating in a number of competitions. Cormac Gillen achieved a SILVER for second in the 100m Butterfly and a BRONZE medal for third place in the 100m Backstroke at the Ulster Grammar Schools Championships which were held in November 2012. At this competition, Gavin Loughrey finished in third place in the 100m Fly earning him a BRONZE medal.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 47

Claire Gillen was invited to attend a Swimming Camp in Tenerife over the Halloween holiday period in October/November 2012 which brought together some of Ulster’s most promising swimmers for a week of long course swimming. This provided the young people with an opportunity to spend a week of high performance training coupled with fun and enjoyment while building friendships with peers of their own age group from other schools in Ulster.

In February 2013, the Boys Senior Swimming Team comprising of Pearse Bradley, Eoin Casey, Cormac Gillen and Gavin Loughrey were nominated for the Derry City Council Sports Awards by a representative of the City of Derry Swimming Club. In a ceremony held at the City Hotel on 15th February the team was awarded the Post Primary School Teams Award 2013. This accolade was awarded due to the dedication and commitment that the boys have shown to not only the school but to swimming in the City. The boys are passionate about swimming and as a team have enjoyed tremendous success over the past number of years achieving gold and silver in the All-Ireland Schools’ Championships in Dublin alongside numerous other successes. In addition to this outstanding sportsmanship, the boys’ contribution to the Lumen Christi Swimming Club is impressive, giving of their free time voluntarily to accompany junior students to the City Baths. They ensure that students are safe travelling to the venue, work in collaboration with other coaches to instruct younger pupils and assume responsibility for training the more advanced swimmers in preparation for swimming galas. In giving and reaching out to the community by willingly using their talents to help others, they embody core values enshrined in the Vision and Aims of Lumen Christi College. This is a special accolade and the boys are worthy recipients of the award.

In the final competition of the school year, the North West Swimming Gala which was held on 6th June, our swimmers were in fine form. On the night, the College managed to win three out of the six overall shields which were contested. The Under-13 Shield was awarded to the Year 8 Boys; Under-16 Shields were awarded to both the Year 11 and 12 boys and girls teams. With an impressive individual medal tally of 11 GOLD, 6 SILVER and 2 BRONZE medals swimmers from the College are excelling in their individual events. In the team relay competitions Lumen Christi picked up 6 first place GOLD medals and 2 second place SILVER medals. This is a tremendous achievement year after year and all swimmers should be proud of their performances.

Health Education

The promotion of Health in Lumen Christi College takes places in many guises involving numerous personnel, departments and initiatives. The Pastoral Care Programme as delivered through the Form Class makes a major contribution to the provision of Health Education while Health Education is also delivered through a variety of contributory subjects at Key Stages 3 and 4 including LLW, Science, Religious Education, English (including Drama), Home Economics and Physical Education.

The school cafeteria also promotes a healthy diet by providing healthy nutritious meals in line with the standards published in “School Food – The Essential Guide” and the college’s Nutritional Food Policy.

As part of the school's commitment to the development of the Extended Schools initiative, opportunities are created to facilitate community-linked, health-related actions. These include strategies aimed at building a range of partnerships with other schools and the community in order to positively impact upon the full development of each individual pupil. Health-related activities which were offered as part of this initiative include:

GP Referral Programme for year 11 Night classes on Healthy Cooking-through the Cook-it Programme STAR Programme Evening exercise classes e.g. Zumba and Mix-it-up Exercise Breakfast Club Soccer Club City of Derry Netball Club A Health & Well Being Programme offering physical activities for Year 14 e.g. gym

Throughout the year various events take place to further embed the message of the importance a healthy lifestyle. These included:

Walk to School Initiative – On two days in Term 1 & 3 buses were redirected to the depot and students walked to school via Bishop Street. Blood Drive – 75 pints of blood were donated by our school community. Foyle Hospice Female Walk & Foyle Hospice Male Walk.

The Extended Schools Programme

Lumen Christi‘s continued participation in the Extended Schools Scheme 2012-2013 brought increased benefits for pupils, parents, members of the local community and the College. The Extended Schools initiative has been embedded in the school and is a valued component of the School Development Programme. Action plans have been approved, implemented, monitored and evaluated. The co-ordinator continues to liaise with WELB and other statutory agencies to profile the pupil population to improve the targeting process. Registering of pupils attending clubs, post 3.30pm, using Assessment Manager is ongoing. The school has engaged positively in all cluster activities and links with community and voluntary groups have been strengthened

Impact on School Improvement The provision of support by the Homework Club Supervisor, peer mentors and teaching staff via the Homework Club continues to ensure that targeted pupils are progressing in-line with departmental schemes which reflect the statutory requirements of the Revised Curriculum. The child centred provision within the Homework Club reflects a clear commitment to promoting equality of opportunity and the assistance needed to ensure that all pupils can achieve to the very best of their ability, principles enshrined in the DENI policy “Every School a Good School”.

The continued engagement of a Library Supervisor, post 3.30pm, has served to sustain pupil book borrowing statistics. In addition, her facilitation of the Book Club, in collaboration with the Head of English and pupil mentors, has had tangible impact on the literacy skills of targeted Year 10 pupils.

The provision of support through attendance at a Saturday School for a six week period immediately prior to Study Leave in advance of the examination period has ensured that targeted pupils progressed in terms of an increase in self esteem leading to improvement in exam performance as indicated in Summer 2013 examination results. The Saturday School also provided an opportunity for all the pupils in KS4 and KS5 to refine their organisational skills ahead of taking examinations.

The numbers of pupils attending all clubs offered by the programme nurtures positive attitudes and relationships and consequently enhances the learning environment of the school.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 50

The GAA Coaching course has provided participants with an accreditation which will enhance their university applications, volunteering ability and/or employment opportunities.

E-Learning The ICT Morning Club; 8.15am - 9.00am is a busy environment where productive, focused, independent and supported learning takes place. Facilitated by an ICT technician, it has provided equity of access to printing facilities and other computer capabilities and has enabled pupils to improve the quality of the work they produce in a range of subjects.

Health Education Mix-It Up Exercise, Hip Hop and Zumba classes provided pupils, staff, parents and members of the community with the opportunity to improve their physical wellbeing. Through the GP Referral Programme, Netball and Soccer clubs, both primary and post-primary pupils enhanced their fitness and skills levels which impacted positively on their self-esteem and general attitude to school life. The Cook-It and Food for Thought programmes for pupils and parents educated participants in nutrition and healthy food choices and supplied the knowledge and the culinary skills to enable them to provide tasty, popular but healthy meals. All these activities maximise the health of pupils, staff, parents and members of the local community.

The cumulative total for young people and adults taking part in regular physical activity in after school clubs is 103. In addition, pupils in Year 13 and Year 14 have participated in a range of physical activities through the Community Outreach Programme which have helped to contribute to a healthy lifestyle. The GP Referral programme assisted pupils in need of support on a personal level of the benefits of combining a healthy diet with regular exercise to ensure that their physical and mental wellbeing are maintained. The small group tutorials organised for Year 14 girls with representatives from the Pink Ladies provided the girls with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the signs of breast cancer in an open, supportive and positive environment. Tutorials organised for Year 14 boys provided them with methods for checking for the first signs of testicular cancer in an open, supportive and positive environment. The Health and Well-being cluster event for Year 14 pupils informed them of ways of identifying and coping with stress. It also alerted them to the dangers of using the internet, excess alcohol consumption, use of drugs, use of sunbeds and excessive exposure to the sun and supplied information on support services available.

Provision for the Gifted and Talented The Chess Club and our annual chess competition for local primary and post-primary schools enabled pupils who have particular expertise to further refine their skills through expert tuition and healthy peer competition. The Primary School Music and Guitar Club programme allowed our gifted and talented students to use their abilities innovatively to provide the opportunity for primary school children to learn to play a musical instrument in a relaxed learning environment. Students providing music tuition via the Primary School Music Programme were rewarded for their professionalism, commitment and dedication to the programme when they were nominated and subsequently awarded the Derry Credit Union Young People’s Award. Participation in the Community Outreach Programme afforded a number of pupils the opportunity to undertake a GAA Coaching Foundation Level Course which included Child Protection Training. Upon completion these pupils in conjunction with staff and teachers from a local primary school were able to cascade their knowledge and skills to primary school pupils to engage them on the benefits of undertaking sporting activities and to help with the development of skills.

Adult Education & Community Involvement The College offered provision of GCSE Maths, Italian and Irish classes, Cookery and Exercise Programmes for adults in the local community. Invitations were extended to the local community to participate in the Annual Carol Service and provision of school facilities for the community allowed access to NIBTS Blood Donation sessions. Members of the local community also benefited from pupil participation in a “Window Box Planting” activity which saw collaboration between Lumen Christi College students and young children from the Nazareth House Primary School to create and distribute window boxes to homes in the locality to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the environment and promote environmental awareness. Pupils have been actively involved in recycling and energy saving initiatives. The FACT Project (Families Achieving Change Together) allows for those pupils/families who are experiencing some personal challenges to access the support of a Family Worker who, through consent, can assist the family to work through any issues together. Triax Cluster Activities were delivered in collaboration with our partner schools ( St Cecilia‘s College, St Joseph‘s College, St Mary‘s College and St Peter‘s High School) on the following initiatives in each of the schools: Health & Well-being Event for Year 14 students, a Physical Activity Programme for Year 13, a GP Referral Programme for KS4 pupils, a Cook-It Programme

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 52 for Year 8 & 9 students and clubs in Yoga, Gymnastics, Wall climbing, Orienteering, Soccer and Walking. A Parenting UR Teen Programme organised by the cluster in collaboration with Parenting NI allowed parents access to support to help them tackle the challenges that they face on a daily basis when bringing up adolescents. In delivering the Extended Schools programmes, the College has developed close links with the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum, Conservation Volunteers , local primary schools, Altnagelvin Hospital, Volunteer Development Agency, British Heart Foundation, Residential Homes, City of Culture Company and Derry City Council and would wish to thank all of them for their continued support.

Year 13 Community Outreach Programme

This was another very successful year for the Outreach programme with over 120 Year 13 students participating, including those students that selected the Work Experience/Internship option.

The programme was restructured this year to consist of two placements each of 10 weeks and 8 weeks in duration. This allowed for all Year 13 to attend 2 weeks of RSE talks in Dec and 4 weeks of Physical Activities in April/May.

Below are some comments/recommendations from staff members involved, pupils and some feedback from the Outreach centres.

Nazareth House Residential Home This was a very committed group of students this year and they made a big impact on the residents they visited.

Teacher commented that the activity wasn't working particularly well at the beginning due to the lack of students with musical ability in the group. This was remedied in late October and the placement proved very successful thereafter.

Margaret Curran, Unit Manager commented: The residents of the Nazareth House thoroughly enjoyed the students coming on Wednesday afternoons and provided good entertainment singing and playing music. The students had good communication skills and were very respectful to all residents and staff in the home.

Pupil comments: I feel like it was a great experience which was very rewarding when the residents showed their appreciation. It has made me want to do more for the elderly and has shown me that the smallest things were able to make their day. I would love to go back and visit. I enjoyed it and found that near the end of the programme it was more enjoyable as we knew the elderly people better. I was able to talk to them more easily.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 54

Altnagelvin Hospital Due to the limited number of placements and the large number of students desiring this option, we divided the students into two groups and sent each to the hospital for 9 Wednesdays. They engaged in a number of activities, namely administration tasks, befriending, restocking equipment, etc. This gave them ward experience and time in a hospital environment. Many of the students who opted for this placement will apply to study medicine at university.

Pupil comments: It broadened my horizons. I was a good experience and I learned a lot. I developed my organisational skills in the hospital. I felt it went well as I had the chance to see procedures on patients.

Nazareth House PS The focus of this activity was numeracy and literacy. LCC students worked with the same pupils each week and so built up a good understanding of their ability/needs and established friendships.

Pupil comments: I feel the Outreach Programme allowed me to develop my communication skills when working with children, along with my patience skills. I feel the Outreach Programme really helped me to realise that I really enjoy working with and communicating with children and it also helped me to choose what I wanted to do at university.

Ms McDevitt (teacher) commented: the students interacted well with the pupils they worked with. They were very pleasant and polite, but firm with the pupils when they needed to be.

Longtower PS The focus of this activity was art and craft. The activity went well but could be improved through the provision of more materials and resources. This will have to be addressed for the next academic year.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 55

Ms Brown (acting Principal) commented: this is a very worthwhile programme. Our pupils really enjoyed the activities this year and looked forward to games / art each week.

Pupil comments: I feel my personal development has improved as I developed my listening and communication skills. It was excellent; a good experience leading to the development of key skills. I feel it was a nice distraction from the stress of AS exams/coursework.

GAA Training In this activity 12 of our students are trained by Mr Paul Simpson as Foundation Level coaches (certified course offered by the GAA that involves Child Protection training) – our students then coached pupils from Long Tower PS.

Pupil comments: I developed knowledge of coaching which will benefit me in the future. I think that I have gained leadership skills. I learned some good skills and enjoyed working with children.

Peer Mentoring The students were spread throughout a variety of classes. Owing to what was available and to the requests of teachers and students within LCC, students received study time in lieu of time given to the mentoring programme.

Pupil comments: It was an enjoyable experience and I got to assist pupils with their work and any issues they had. I felt that there could be an increase in the range of activities in more areas. Think it develops your communication skills and time management. Good chance to work with younger students and gain leadership skills.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 56

Life Saving Skills The Heart Start Programme continues to be very popular as students are trained in basic first aid skills and then get the opportunity to deliver these to pupils of St John’s PS and Year 9 students of LCC.

Pupil comments: I feel that it was very helpful ... Miss Fleming was a great teacher ... I feel I got a lot out of trying to teach the Year 9s. Helped me learn essential skills in saving a life. Useful to learn skills like CPR and how to give first aid.

Gasyard Music Tuition The students were winners at the Derry Credit Union Young People’s Awards in the Best Community Service section. They spent their time in the Gasyard working with local children who had the desire to learn musical instruments.

Sandra Doherty from the Gasyard commented: the students helped provide access to local children to learn and develop their music skills. Their commitment and dedication make children succeed and the programme a success. The students were nominated at the Derry Credit Union Young People’s Awards and I must say they were worthy winners.

Pupil comments: It was good and broadened my horizons. Very enjoyable and taught me a lot about teaching and teaching music. Helped develop tolerance and empathy. Great opportunity to give back to the community that made me who I am.

City of Culture Volunteers A team of 10 students attended the City of Culture Volunteering Office each week. They spent their time between planning projects, training and volunteering. They volunteered in several initiatives connected with the City of Culture Programme, such as the Programme Launch and the Annie World Record Attempt. Towards the end of the placement they began a project of volunteering in a residential home for adults with special needs. This will continue beyond the school academic year. Pupil Comments:

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2012-13 57

It was good - developed better teamwork skills. I felt it was very beneficial to me as I got a lot of opportunities for volunteering with it and completed several courses I could not have done had I not been a volunteer.

Work Experience Approximately 10 students choose this activity on a Wednesday afternoon – feedback from employers and students has been very positive.

Pupil Comments: Very beneficial, it gives us an idea of what to expect in September when we do work experience. I really enjoyed my work placement. Helpful, provides new experiences.

The Seagate programme proved yet again to be one of the most sought after, mainly due to its potential career usefulness and the limited number of places available (3 or 4). Our students did find it extremely beneficial but it should be noted that in future only students with physics, mathematics and ICT should be considered for this placement.
