Obligation of Memory by Rabbi Emily Losben-Ostrov

It is said that people come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Sometimes we are lucky enough that a person seems to fit all three categories. I am grateful that Max Steinmetz- who we recently brought to our congregation, has fulfilled that trifecta, albeit in a slightly different way.

You may remember meeting Max at Shabbat services back in November. I introduced him as a Holocaust Survivor who I had connected with because I saw him on an episode of ’s “Stars in the House.” Well, as soon as I said Max and his wife Betty live in Alabama, Jerry Smith (of blessed memory) started playing Jewish Geography - right in the middle of our service! A connection was instantly made!

We knew we needed to have Max share his story of survival with our congregation. While I thought it would make a great program for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), we also determined it would be nice to have him share his story in January, right after Max’s 96th birthday. We needed to hear this story and it didn’t need to be on a specific date. So, a few months after my first email and phone call with Max, he shared his life story with our congregation on Sunday, January 24th. While I encouraged everyone to attend, I really implored our older religious school students to “meet” Max as I was concerned he could be both the first and last Holocaust survivor they met.

In case you missed his program, you can watch (or even rewatch) by clicking HERE

Last month, only six weeks after he spoke with us, Max had a stroke and subsequently passed away. While I never met him in person, Max became a friend and has now had and will continue to have a profound impact upon my life. Max clearly came into my life for the purpose of sharing his story. His legacy empowers us to never forget the horrors of the Holocaust and to also understand the importance of memory and faith. It was a short “season” of friendship, as I knew him less than six months before his passing. However, he will live on through me- and hopefully through ALL of us, for our lifetimes. It is now upon us to carry his memory and share his story.

As we observe Yom HaShoah- Holocaust Memorial Day we must remember to bear witness not just one day a year- but all year long. We must observe and honor the memories of the Six million who perished and tell the stories of the survivors- most of whom are no longer around to tell their own stories. And we must commit to honoring those memories by working to prevent and stop atrocities in our own time. We will be doing just that with our Holocaust Memorial Programs on April 8th and April 9th.

Never forget! May Max's memory and the memories of all who perished in the Holocaust always be for blessing!

TIKKUN OLAM COMMITTEE UPDATE April is a big month for Tikkun Olam. Congregants will have an opportunity to safely participate in both social action and social justice. Here's how.

While not technically in April, the Tikkun Olam Committee will be hosting Temple of Israel's annual Shavuot food drive in early May. Our goal is to donate over 1,000 lbs of food. This may seem large, but considering last High Holidays we donated almost 700 lbs, it is achievable. If we can all start purchasing an extra non-perishable item while shopping during April, then we will surely beat this goal.

Please see below for two very special programs the Tikkun Olam Committee is hosting in April.

Finally, we have a caring and capable community at Temple of Israel. If you are involved with a charitable organization and would like to share your story or more about the organization, then please reach out to Jonathan Lacefield and we can include your organization in our monthly bulletin and/or provide time during a Friday Night service for sharing.

Yom HaShoah Program ~ Uyghur: Bearing Witness Thursday, April 8th at 7:30pm

Description: In observance of Yom HaShoah- Holocaust Memorial Day, we will learn about the current day genocide of the Uyghur people in China through the lens and memories of artist Lisa Ross joined by Akeda Pulati whose mother, a Uyghur Ethnographer, disappeared in 2017. After the Holocaust we vowed, "Never Again." We must keep our word and learn about the plight of others so that we can stand up and make a difference.

Artist and educator, Lisa Ross, lives and works in the Bronx, NY. Ross’s work revolves around the liminal spaces in which faith, culture and abstraction meet. Large immersive photographs and videos explore the skin of the land, revealing the texture of culture and intimacy. Over time, the political realities inextricably bound to place, emerge. Ross’s first monograph, Living Shrines of Uyghur China, (2013) received reviews in The NY Review of Books and many other books. Ross has had numerous exhibitions around the world. Ross received an MFA from Columbia University and BA from Sarah Lawrence College.

Akeda Pulati, daughter of Rahile Dawut, is currently working at the Campaign For Uyghurs.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS

by Felecia Becker, Assistant to the Religious School

Hello everyone! This past March the Temple of Israel’s religious school has been up to so much!

To start off this past month we focused on the topic of Tzedakah! The students learned all about donations and we have been encouraging our students to give tzedakah, as an important Jewish value. To help the students start collecting money they made their very own Tzedakah boxes! They loved learning about this topic and cannot wait to start donating Tzedakah!

Another big topic this month was preparing for the holiday Passover!! To get ready the students learned about the four questions. The students practiced the questions in Hebrew with the help of our teachers and even some cool videos. Despite being online, the students still love learning about Passover and the four questions. Along with practicing the four questions, the students also got to make their own Seder plates! We cannot wait to see them in use during their Seders! See some amazing photos below!

Thank you to everyone who supported our Passover Candy Sale-- It was an extremely successful fundraiser for the Religious School.

It’s hard to believe we only have four more classes for the school year! Overall, we had a great time learning and cannot wait to finish out the school year together!
