Preparing for Next Sunday’s Mass

Parish LinCMay Letter 16, 2021 May 23, 2021 Pentecost Sunday

Step 1 Read the following Scripture passage paying attention to a word, phrase, or idea that stands out to you:

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” John 20:19-23

Make Use of One of These Communion Connections: Step 2 Pentecost is the feast of the Spirit! Through Pentecost, the Spirit is sent out to renew the face of the earth; to create the Church. The Church exists as a vehicle for the Spirit to renew the earth. So the Church is everyone who has been baptized and born into the inner life of God - Father, Son and Spirit. As persons bap- tized in the Trinity, we need to understand who we are as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We are one, united, in the Church, born of one baptism, forming the Body of Christ, and given life by the one Spirit, with the hope of overcoming all division in the world. To be holy is to be united with God and filled with love; a love that wills the good of another, for the world. Catholic means, universal. By its nature and mission, the Church is meant to spread the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth. “Apostle” means to send off; to go out. The 12 apostles were empowered by the Holy Spirit to go out to the whole world and pro- claim the Good News. It is our apostolic duty to carry out this mission which reaches back to the Apostles. As the Body of Christ, we must live up to our baptismal call to bring Jesus Christ in our world. Let’s re- new our commitment to get out of the upper room, to light the fire of the Spirit’s love in our streets, at work, in schools, and in the hearts of neighbors. This is our mission as apostles of Christ. Let’s be the Church that the Spirit wants us to be, so we can remove division, racism, and hatred from our world. Let’s find that identity that we received in baptism, and learn to live it again, as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

Consider and Discuss these 3 Questions:

Step 3 Considering your life today.... 1. What in this reading comforted you? 2. What in this reading encouraged you? 3. What in this reading challenged you? For further contemplation.... What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of me?

Step 4 conclude by praying our “Parish Communion Prayer”

O Communion of Love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, embrace us as your children in this family of faith. Welcome us to a place at your table in the wedding feast of heaven. O Father of Mercy, forgive us as we forgive. Reconcile us as one Body in Christ and make us instruments of your Peace. O Spirit of Fire and Light, send us as your witnesses in daily life. Through our prayer, faith, and good works may we become welcoming doorways, inviting others to enter and encounter your Holy Communion of Love. We make this prayer, Father, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and through Christ our Lord. Amen
