Sharing the Glow by Fr. Mike McKinney I am constantly reminding the Cursillistas at my parish of All in Logansport that Cursillo is a movement, not a weekend experience. That does not mean the three days are not important. I am the first to encourage people to go because it is one of those rare things in the that you almost are guaranteed to see it make an impact on people.

But to truly live your Cursillo is to live the Fourth Day. The reality is that the excitement and energy you experience coming off the weekend does not continue at that same level the rest of your life. But I am convinced that the true power of the Cursillo movement is to live it out in our daily lives, with the support of other Cursillistas. It is the entire Cursillo method, not the weekend, that ultimately leaves the more lasting impression on our faith life.

Father Mike McKinney, One of the dynamics of Cursillo, especially as you get deeper into your Fourth Day, is to Spiritual Advisor, share in the enthusiasm of those who are just starting theirs. The conversion or renewal that Lafayette someone has experienced on their Cursillo weekend is God’s gift to all Cursillistas to stay motivated in their life with Christ and evangelization of their environments.

The Cursillo method of participating in weekend closings, Ultreyas, and Group Reunions is to mix together those who are fresh and those who are more established in the movement, so that they can interact and encourage one another. If you have not participated much in Cursillo beyond the weekend, go deeper into this movement to experience the full riches that the Holy Spirit has designed into this gift for the church.

From Fr. Glenn O’Connor

Dear Cursillistas,

Hope that you all had a wonderful Easter and are continuing the celebration during this won- derful season. Our Readings are filled with a great sense of joy and hope. “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

As we read and reflect on the post resurrection appearances of Jesus to his beloved apostles, we can’t help but be amazed at their different reactions. Some doubt, some have joy but ulti- mately there is excitement of going out and telling the others.

The first preachers of the gospel were men and women who not only encountered the Risen Lord, but could not wait to proclaim it by encountering others. These encounters were face to face sharing of their faith in the Risen Lord, not just to one another but in fact to all.

We in Cursillo are always called to encounter the Risen Lord and to encounter others with the Good News of our faith in the Risen Lord. The key things about those encounters are Father Glenn O’Connor, Spiritual Advisor, they are personal witness and face to face encounters. That is kind of like make a friend, be Indianapolis a friend and bring a friend to Christ.

We are blessed and privileged to be called Christians. We need to encounter with our words and our actions. We are called to be sharers of Jesus to all! All are welcome and all are in- vited to the Lord’s table.

De Colores,

Fr. Glenn

A Reflection of the Holy Land by Jim DuBach

It has been two short months since I returned from a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land led by Archbishop Tobin. Fifty-two of us from Central Indiana visited sacred sites beginning with Old Jaffa, the world’s oldest port, where St. Peter brought Tabitha back from the dead, then to Caesarea with its Roman amphitheater and hippodrome, where St. Paul was imprisoned.

We were then on to the Sea of Galilee, in the very place where Our Lord called the fisher- men, the first Disciples. Sitting under the trees along the shore, with the sweet breezes off the water, it became clear that the Lord chose a beautiful place in which to capture the hearts and minds of his disciples, before the bitter trials to come. The Lord was building a community of disciples, just as we do as Cursillistas.

Then traveling 125 miles south, through Samaria and the Judean desert, we stopped at Jeri- cho, the oldest city in the Western world, then up the mountains into Jerusalem. The Old City is amazing. One is transported back in time as you walk the narrow, crowded streets to the most sacred sites of our Faith, the actual locations where Our Lord was crucified, and where He rose from the dead!

Best of all were the pilgrims themselves, faithful people from all parts of our fascinating world, from many different countries and ethnic groups, all com- ing to deepen their love of Our Lord, and of the Faith. It became so clear to us how vast is God’s love, God who loves variety! So too does the interna- tional Cursillo Movement faithfully reflects the great diversity of believers represented in the Holy Land.

Making a pilgrimage to the beautiful and sacred sites of the Holy Land is an incomparable blessing, and the Cursillo Movement itself reflects the great vari- ety of the universal Church which you will encounter there.

LET HIM IN - Men’s Weekend #113 BY MARK SCHELLER

Men’s Spring Cursillo Weekend #113, March 12 – 15, 2015

How can I put into words the gifts that God blessed us with throughout the entire week- end as well as during Formation? The Holy Spirit led us all the entire weekend and when it was over on Sunday evening I was sure that I had just experienced one of the most powerful events in my entire life.

The weekend began on Thursday night with introductions and I ask each person to share who they would like to talk to first when they get to heaven. Just one requirement, It could not be Jesus or Mary. The names and relationships were varied as were the reasons why they choose the individual. But it was clear from the beginning of the introductions that each candidate and each team member was willing to share in a very special way. After the introductions and weekend in- structions we begun the silent part of the retreat in the chapel with the sharing of the weekend theme. The theme was ‘LET HIM IN’ and we viewed a video of the Inn Keeper refusing to let Jesus stay in the inn when Jesus was born. After viewing the video we all realized that we all need to open the door and let Jesus into our lives.

As the silent phase of the retreat ended on Friday, it became clear very quickly that every- one was more than willing share. We were all very blessed with wonderful talks and the discussion was awesome. It seemed that no one was ever ready to stop discussing after each of the talks. Mid way through the day on Friday the team shared with the candidates the concept of Palanca and with that, we shared with them how as a team will were blessed to choose to have three honorary team members that would watch over and pray for all of us from heaven. The three honorary men were Wayne Tolen, Rick Neidigh, and Monty Mountcastle. As the Rollo’s continued throughout the weekend the candidates seemed to really grow closer to one another as well as to the team.

The emotions on Saturday night changed so completely from first having nuns making a visit to decide just who had the best poster (and they were awesome posters) to having our bell ringer running around the facility gathering everyone using a large pan and ladle (The bell was AWOL). Things then got very emotional during our very special candle light prayer service in the chapel.

On Sunday everything seemed to go so very fast that I was not ready for it to end, but end it did and each and every one of the candidates truly inspired all of us with their comments at the closing. On Monday following the weekend I found myself very sad as I truly missed each and every member of Cursillo 113.

WE WERE CALLED - Womens Weekend #102 BY LISA A BUESCHER

Keeping in line with my great grandmothers belief that being brief is better, “We Were Called, we came, we prayed, it was good, Yeah God!” The End. But the Cursillo editors said I had to expound more on the 102 experience.

As Christians “We Are Called” to spread the Good News. As the Rectora for #102 I chose that theme because the Cursillo move- ment teaches a method that enables each one of us to grow in our personal faith with God and then to reach out to others, to evangel- ize just as Christ told his Disciples in Matthew 4:18-19. “as he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw them casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. “ He said to them, “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

Team 102 came together and the journey began. We were a diverse group of ladies and each one brought her special talents to share.. It involved much prayer and then more prayers. As we say,” pray, pray, pray and pray some more.” Along the way as the journey progressed the Team came together through prayer and hard work. Once formation was complete the most important work lay ahead. Our focus was then on the candidates as they arrived Thursday night.

The ladies, the candidates arrived. Most were strangers but quickly became sisters in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. The speakers each brought a message that enabled the candidates to examine where they were in their faith journey. As the talks progressed the candidates became aware of the method being presented for their growth. They began to understand how to use this method to spread God’s message, to be His disciples. God’s love was abundant and being shared.

Our greatest time of sharing came with the celebration of Mass daily. Everyone was amazed at how active and young Father Paul Landwerlen is. God’s Blessings in action! It was an honor to have him on our Team.

Each one of the ladies that worked or made Women’s Cursillo #102 have gifts and talents that they discovered can be used to further God’s work here on earth.

Meet Your Social Media Coordinator

Hello, my name is Amy Strasburger, and I have greatly enjoyed learning more about Cursillo by serving as the Social Media Coordinator (Facebook, Insta- gram & Twitter). I work full time at the Indianapolis VA Medical Center coun- seling veterans with severe mental illness. I also work as a Weight Watchers Leader and am a Spiritual Director. My first goal for my position is to grow our Facebook following and to analyze what sort of posts our community re- sponds to most through views, likes, comments, etc. Next, I plan to develop our Instagram following as that is the most popular form of social media for younger generations. My overall goal is for our Indiana CICC to stay relevant to all generations through the ever-changing methods of social media!

The Honorary Members of Cursillo 113 by Ward Degler

In addition to the hundreds of people out there offering written and prayerful Palanca for us, we have also invoked the favor of angels and saints in heaven to bless us and pray for us this weekend.

My is St. Luke, and I ask his help with everything. Since I con- stantly lose things, I also rely heavily on St. Anthony to help me find them. I’m quite sure that everyone here has a favorite saint they turn to in times of need.

There are many definitions of a saint: Someone the Church has canonized; someone through whose life we learn what God is like. The Eastern Orthodox faith says a saint is anyone who is in heaven. And Cardi- nal Newman claimed a saint to be an example of holiness that we could follow with confidence.

Based on this and other definitions, it’s pretty clear that not all saints are listed on the Vatican registry. I know a few, and I ask them to pray for me.

I choose to believe Sacred Scripture which says whoever believes in Jesus Christ shall have everlasting life. And everlasting life means they probably know a few things about the hereafter that I don’t. Assuming they pray for us seems a pretty safe bet.

We have three honorary members of Cursillo 113 with us this weekend, and I believe they are praying for us. They are Cursillistas that many of us knew. All three of have died. Let me tell you a little bit about them.

Rick Neidigh is our first honorary member. He was a convert, and alike many converts, he felt he had to make up for the time he lost before becoming a Catholic. He plowed into church work at St. parish in Columbus with a passion. He did everything. He was an usher, a Eucharistic minister, a member of the finance committee, and an RCIA sponsor. He made his Cursillo weekend about 20 years ago. It was that weekend that showed the true humility that guided Rick Neidigh. The Rector that weekend was Dick Shriver, another convert working overtime to profess his faith in Christ. The problem was, Dick is dyslectic which makes it difficult for him to read, and almost impossible to read aloud. But Dick felt the Holy Spirit had appointed him rector of the weekend, and that meant he must read his script. And he did, stumbling along, missing words, sounding them out like a five-year-old. Rick was aghast. He couldn’t believe someone so ill-prepared could be leading the weekend. He began to regret coming. Sometime during the weekend, however, he learned about Dick’s impairment. It made him ashamed of the way he felt about Dick. So much so that during a break he sought him out and confessed his angst and told him how deeply sorry he was. Dick listened, and then smiled and gave Rick a giant bear hug.

After making his weekend, Rick worked numerous teams, and was quick to volunteer for any task that needed doing. Over the years he sponsored an enviable roster of candidates for Cursillo weekends. So devoted to Cursillo was he that days before one weekend when Rick was on the team, he suffered a severe gall bladder attack. It was so bad that the doctor wanted to do surgery on the spot. Rick refused, promised he would simply be careful of what he ate on the weekend and would report for surgery the following week. The weekend went off without a hitch and Rick had his surgery the following Wednesday.

That was Rick Neidigh. Rick died eight years ago after a long battle with lung cancer.

Our second member is Monty Mouncastle. You could say that Monty was a little guy with probably the biggest heart on the planet. He was a natural leader, and after he made Cursillo he used the movement to awaken and build a love of Christ in everyone he met. I don’t know how many weekends Monty worked. I doubt he knew. He just accepted each new day and each new challenge as a gift from God. By profession, Monty was a telephone installer for Ma Bell. When Ma Bell dissolved, he was faced with a choice: take a with some other company, or strike out on his own and start his own telephone installa- tion business. He prayed about it and chose the latter. I say he prayed about it, while actually he struck a deal with God. He got up at 4 o’clock one morning and drove from his home in Anderson to the perpetual adoration chapel at St. Louis DeMont- fort in Fishers. There he got down on his knees before the Blessed Sacrament and told Jesus that if he would enable him to take care of his family that he would be there on his knees every morning at five o’clock. Monty’s telephone business thrived, and to my knowledge for all the years that followed, he never missed a morning in front of the Blessed Sacrament.

He once described his hour of adoration by saying, “I sit there and He looks at me and I look at Him … just to be in his presence.” So devoted was Monty to Cursillo, that when he served as a table leader on one weekend, he grabbed his fellow table leader and insisted they go before the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday before the candidates arrived and lift up all those who would sit at their table during the weekend. Monty was blessed with special experiences in his life. Shortly after his fa- ther died, he had a dream in which his father asked him to tell his mother to stop coming to the cemetery every week, and to “stop wearing that pink hat.” Monty told his mother about the dream, and she was shocked. She hadn’t told anyone she went to the cemetery. “How did you know?” she demanded. “And who told you about my pink hat?”

Something else: For some reason, hearing a train whistle made Monty think of Cursillo. There was just something about it, the whistle calling low in the distance. Monty considered it a message from Jesus, so when he was asked to be rector of Cursillo 79, he already had a theme: “Santa Fe All the Way” – Spanish for Holy Faith.

On top of everything else, Monty had a special place in his heart for the labors of the priesthood. Over the years he gave countless hours helping priests with their duties. When Monty died last year, there were 11 of these priests concelebrat- ing his funeral.

Our third honorary team member is Wayne Tolen. He was a Cursillista for sure, but his brand of Christianity reached way beyond “Make a friend, be a friend.” Wayne, a Cursillista from Richmond, was a friend to everyone.

Those who knew him, knew him for his bountiful and selfless gifts. Those who barely knew him, knew him for his coffee cakes. I have spent a lifetime eating coffee cakes, everything from Danish Kringle to Aunt Mable’s apple strudel. But there was something different, something special about Wayne Tolen’s coffee cakes. I doubt anyone could say what it was, they were just special. Even if we followed his recipe – and some folks say they do – they still don’t taste the same as Wayne’s. And he made them for every event he was involved with. Our own Dave Rokosz tells us about a trip to Cincinnati for a men’s conference that started before daylight one cold windy March morning. As the men boarded the school bus, there was Wayne at the top step handing each man a cup of fresh coffee and a slice of warm coffee cake. And, oh yeah, Wayne was 83 years old at the time. His age didn’t seem to be a factor in anything he did. He often trundled over to the local elementary school where he served up fresh-baked cookies and read stories to the children. He also loved woodworking, and spent hours teaching school kids how to make birdhouses. You would think a man in his 0s would take it easy. Not Wayne. When Wayne Tolen was in his 80s he joined the Richmond contingent of Habitat for Humanity. One house he worked on was for a family whose little girl knew him as “Grandpa Tolen,” the man who read stories to them in school. When the child say Wayne at the building site, she grabbed him by the hand and took him into the house to show him her bedroom – much to her mother’s as- tonishment.

There is probably no better way to describe Wayne but to say his love and excitement for land his smile and excitement were contagious. No one ever met Wayne who didn’t leave with a smile on their face. As Wayne aged he became ill. But even when the doctor told him he had only a few months to live, he never lost his smile. He made it clear that he had had a good life, and that he had no regrets.

So, these are the three honorary members of Cursillo 113 – Rick Neidigh,. Monty Mountcastle and Wayne Tolen. Are they saints? I don’t know, but I believe they are watching over us and praying Palanca for us here today.

In summary, I will borrow from the singer Dion and offer my own lyrics to one of his well known songs.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Rick? Can you tell me where he’s gone? He helped a lot of people, but it seems the good they die young. I just turned around and he was gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Monty? Can you tell me where he’s gone? He helped a lot of people, but it seems the good they die young. I just turned around and he was gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Wayne? Can you tell me where he’s gone? He helped a lot of people, but it seems the good they die young. I just turned around and he was gone.

Has anybody here seen my Blessed Mother Mary? Can you tell me where she’s gone? Some said they saw her walking over the hill With Rick, Monty and Wayne

Post Cursillo BY TIM HAYS

The spring 2015 Grand Reunion Ultreya was held at Our Lady of Grace Parish in Noblesville with approximately one hundred and fifty cursillista’s in attendance.

Marty Van Der Burgt and David Leclere provided the music . Terri Riley and Carlos Peredo gave witness to the weekends that they just completed. The enthusiasm and the content of the witness talks filled the hearts of those in the room helping all to remember and reflect on their own encounter to live a Christian life and continue the conversion process of the fourth day. It is always memorable to see those cursillista’s, who are now friends, that served with you on a previous weekends, and share the same values that you consider im- portant. A special thanks to all those who made this event possible. It continues to amaze me the way cursil- lista’s work together to accomplish tasks of every nature. There will be a City Wide Ultreya on August 22, 2015 at Holy Spirit of Geist. Save this date and plan on seeing all of your friends there. I will see that a flyer is posted on the website, and that all Parish Coordinators receive a copy for posting in their parishes.
