TO VIEW RING KEITH G. CLAUSEN 07 843 3566 or 0274 951 350 WHAM: Quentin Wallace catches John Hapi with a great shot at ASB Bank Stadium, Te Awamutu [email protected] Events Centre on Saturday night. Photo supplied There was nothing unlucky about Quentin Wal- lace returning to the ring 13 years since he last fought as a boxer. The Waipa Tennis Academy coach and former Golden Gloves boxer won a unanimous points decision over John Hapi of Tauranga on his full contact kickboxing debut at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre on Saturday night. Wallace danced his way to the ring, soaking up the atmosphere and psyching himself up. He tore into his opponent, rocking Hapi with some lightning hand techniques. Thirty seconds into the round, the Bay of Plenty fi ghter was looking in trouble. A stray right hand from Hapi then caught Wal- lace above the left eye, dropping him to the can- vas. Hapi was also looking in trouble but on the ropes. Wallace got to his feet at the count of six. He was bleeding badly, so the ref gave the call to try and stop the blood. Coaches Rick Dobson and Neil Fynn worked on his cut, stemming the fl ow. When the fi ght restarted Wallace was still un- easy on his feet till the bell - his fi ghter’s instinct got him through. The rules state a fi ghter must attempt six kicks to his opponent. “We instructed him to kick the minimum and then return to his boxing,” said Dobson. “That one minute rest got his strength back and he went out into the second round with a sheer determination.” Hapi was a tough cookie. Wallace hit him with everything he could, al- though his power was sapped a little due to the cut. Hapi managed to stay up, although a number of hits had him rocking. The judges unanimous decision in favour of Wal- lace sent the hometown crowd wild. Phantom Te Awamutu’s Eli Fynn showed no nerves in the build up to his debut fi ght and looked incredibly comfortable in the ring. His opponent Richard Hastie of Hamilton was another fi rst timer. They fought all three rounds toe to toe, neither giving an inch. The end result was a points victory to Fynn, much to the delight of his father/co-coach Neil Fynn. DIVIDED LOYALTIES The fi rst of two national title fi ghts featured Georgie Tutaki against Te Awamutu’s (ex-Brit) Becky Wallace. They slugged it out for three rounds, with Tutaki winning on points. She was 6kg heavier and too fast and powerful for her opponent. It was a tough bout for Rick Dobson to endure. Tutaki is a member of the national team Dob- son is manager/coach of, and he coaches Wallace locally. “I was disappointed for Becky to lose the title, but I was relieved and delighted that my team member did not get hurt as she fi ghts in Portugal in November at the WAKO amateur world cham- pionships.” The second national title fi ght featured Peter Thompson of Invercargill and Tauranga’s Leith Trail. They were well matched at middleweight - Thompson, a master of the spinning kicks, and Leith, the straight down the middle fi ghter. The third and deciding round saw Thompson crowned the new middleweight champion of New 249TC034-07 Zealand. The regional title fi ght between Shaye Brooks Vaughan Glidden A/H 07 889 4986 Mob (021) 720 122 of Huntly and Ryan Marsh of Tauranga was an outstanding match. Peter Glidden Honda Shane Blackwell A/H 07 870 2474 Mob (021) 740 890 Brooks won a close decision to retain the title for Peter Bryant Mob (021) 466 327 another year.
