Life

After graduating from commercial school and apprenticeship and journeyman years at the machine works "Weil & Meyer", Kirchheim / Teck, and "Bohley & Leinen", Esslingen / Neckar, as well as military service in World War I, S. passed the master craftsman's examination in 1922 and made himself Self-employed together with Albert Fezer in 1925 with the establishment of the company "Fezer & Stoll" in Esslingen. At first, machines were repaired, tools were manufactured and ball bearings were installed in woodworking machines. The realization that there were hardly any machines suitable for machining workpieces in the carpentry businesses of that time prompted S. to produce transportable carpentry machines. With the carpentry universal machine (ZUM) presented in 1927, S.the establishment of the hand machines sold under the brand name "Festo" on the market. ZUM mastered mortise milling, drilling and step milling and for the first time replaced pure manual labor with a machine. In 1929 the company, which had been run as an OHG since 1928, was entered in the commercial register, and the partnership agreement was dissolved in the early 1930s. In 1933 S. took over the company with 15 employees as the sole owner. As a result, S. devoted himself to the development of new, more efficient and safe machines. With the introduction of dust extraction in disc grinders, he made great progress in the area of occupational safety; in 22 patents S.named as inventor. Since 1939 the company has operated as "Festo-Maschinenfabrik GottliebCookies: Stoll". The small number of forced laborers in the company (15) and their positive comments in the denazification process led to the classification of S. s as "fellow travelers" ( Cat. IV), so that he was able to run the company again since 1948. With the hand grinder "Rutscher", which enabled a special quality in the chip-free surface processing of the most varied of materials, couldS. to tie in with pre-war successes and in 1952 to found the first branch in Neidlingen ( Lkr. Esslingen). With the start of the new pneumatics business field, S. made the decisive breakthrough to sustainable growth in 1955. Pneumatic components were first manufactured and installed for clamping and feeding workpieces in assembly machines, and cylinders were used for fast linear movements for automation in special machine tool construction. Since 1956, S. initiated the internationalization of the company with the establishment of branches in Italy and Switzerland, which was expanded in 1962 to include production sites in Berkheim (Baden- Württ. ) And 1968 in Rohrbach (Saarland). The company counted at S.s death approx. 2000 employees and was continued by the sons. In 1980 there was a change to "Festo KG (Church history, limited partnership) " and in 1997 to today's "Festo AG (Corporation) & Co. KG (Limited partnership) ". The G. S. Scholarship awarded by Kurt and Wilfried Stoll in 1998 supports young academics from countries in which the company is active.
