CHAMPIONSHIPTRADITION•ACADEMICEXCELLENCE•INTEGRITY 3 Coach Mi ilVieth Bill he University of Evansville soccer program came a long way in 2006, a direct result of Mike Jacobs taking over Tthe leadership of the program as head coach. The Purple Aces produced the nation’s most improved record last season, winning seven more games than the year before to finish at 9-8-0. That wasn’t all. UE in 2006 post- ed its best non-conference record (7-3-0) since 1996, and the Purple Aces' fifth place finish in the highly regarded Missouri Valley Conference was their highest since 1999. “We can look back on last season and know that our team built a foundation for the future,” Jacobs says. “Now it’s time to work from that foundation and continue improving.” Jacobs impressed the entire Evansville soccer community last year with his spirit, confidence and hard work. He came to Evansville with knowledge of the program, having served as an assistant coach in 2000 and 2001 for legendary coach Fred Schmalz. Jacobs worked tirelessly to reach out to fans and alumni, and quickly instilled pride in his players. He embraced the returning squad members and then added 12 newcomers for the 2006 season, four of whom had Division I playing experience. “It’s important that we reconnect with the Evansville soccer community and our alumni,” Jacobs says. “We placed a big emphasis with our players on the responsibility we have to give back to the community. We want our players to know that Evansville is one of the best places in the country for college soccer. This is truly a special place.” In the four years prior to 2006, Jacobs served as the top assistant coach at Duke University, where he helped lead coach John Rennie’s Blue Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the semifinals of the 2004 College Cup. "Brady has done a tremendous job in getting our players enthusiastic about working out in the weight room," according to Head Coach Mike Jacobs, “and the strides we have made as a team in that area are a big reason for our improvement on the field as well.” Adds Holt, “The two main goals of the strength program here at UE are injury prevention and the development of athleti- cism. This is accomplished with balanced training programs that emphasize movements instead of training body parts. Additional emphasis is placed on technique, which involves executing each movement in the most mechanically efficient way. With efficient movement and good technique, the likeli- hood of injury is greatly reduced and performance is dramat- ically enhanced.” Trainer Terry Collins Tim Williams Tim t the University of Evansville, the athletic training staff is pro-active, making sure that each student-athlete is in the Abest physical condition possible before competition begins. Head Trainer Terry Collins works directly with the men’s soccer players, assisted by student trainer Kasey Wahl. “TC and his athletic training staff are a key component in our program’s success,” says Head Coach Mike Jacobs. “He does a great job in helping our players stay healthy, as well as in their recovery when they are injured.” A large portion of the job for Collins and his staff of certified trainers and student trainers involves preventing injuries from ever occurring. That’s accomplished through educating athletes, pro- viding pre-season physical examinations, and proper nutrition and conditioning. When injuries do occur, UE’s trainers work closely with Team Physician Dr. Andrew Saltzman and physical therapy professionals from ProRehab, PC to rehabilitate the athletes and get them back into playing shape. Care is taken to make sure that all injuries are completely healed before athletes are allowed to compete again. “Our responsibilities are to prevent, assess, and rehabilitate injuries, as well as providing acute and follow-up care to athletes,” says Collins. “We have several local medical providers in Evansville who assist the training staff, also. It’s gratifying for us to help the athletes get the most out of their potential by keeping them fit and ready to compete.”

eading into his first season as the man in charge at the University of Evansville, in 2006, Head Coach Mike Jacobs stated: “We’re here to rebuild the culture and tra- Hdition of Aces Soccer. We have three stages in building the program. The first is to play competitively on a consistent basis. The second is to win consistently, and the third is to win championships consistently.” It didn’t take Coach Jacobs and his Purple Aces long to achieve the first goal. The Aces’ 7-3 non-conference record was their best since 1996, their fifth place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference was their best since 1999, and the result of UE’s competi- tive play on a consistent basis was the most improved record in the nation at 9-8-0. Part II of Coach Jacobs' building project is to win consistently, and that’s the goal for the Aces beginning in 2007. “Winning is habitual,” said Jacobs. “This past season was an encouraging step in build- ing a foundation of success, and our challenge now is to take the next step in expecting to be successful. You do that by placing a priority in working hard on both sides of the ball and buying into the idea of being a part of something bigger than themselves. This 2007 Dustin Awe team has the potential to have those characteristics.” They have a strong nucleus to get it done, beginning with 14 players who saw action in 2006. The Aces’ high-powered offense is led by a returning core that was among the nation’s top 30 in scoring in 2006. Heading that group is senior midfielder/forward Cory Elenio, who “This team is looking to create their earned NSCAA All- own chapter in Aces’ history.” Midwest Region honors last fall after finishing second in the Missouri Valley Conference in points (20) and goals scored (8). Another key attacking threat is senior midfielder Dustin Awe, who led the Missouri Valley Conference and finished 10th nationally in assists with nine. He was chosen as the Aces’ Overall Most Valuable Player. Other key returning attacking threats include Ian McAuley (8-2-18) and Tom Irvin (5-6-16). Incoming freshman Robby Lynch, the 2006 Gatorade Indiana State Player of the Year and NSCAA High School All- American, is also expected to be a key contributor in the midfield. Dan Gibson, Sam Bornstein, Tyler Hoek and Ben Harner all gave the Aces excellent depth in the middle of the pitch last season. Moll and Minyono will also be looked at to contribute in the midfield. Kieran Purcell returns to lead the team’s defense after starting all 17 matches as a freshman. In fact, Purcell won the Aces’ Ironman Award for playing the most minutes on the squad. The experience that Purcell gained representing his native New Zealand in this summer’s Under-20 World Championships will prove valu- able for the Aces. Senior Erik Johnson and Bornstein will compete for playing time in the back after solid performances this past spring, and both have the versa- tility to help the team in the midfield. A lot will be expected of junior Kipp Cory Elenio Erskine, who transferred from Hartwick College in January. Erskine is a leader who brings valuable collegiate experience to the center back role. Newcomers Ally Mackay, Austin Eanes, Mitch Mansfield and Austin Schall are also very capable of con- tributing. “This team is looking to create their The last line of defense has plenty of experience in own chapter in Aces’ history.” goalkeepers Alec Dufty and Corey Southers. Dufty was also called in by the United States Under-20 National Team this past year. Southers played in eight matches last season with four starts, and brings nearly 4,000 minutes of collegiate experience into his senior year. “A returning nucleus of players who understand our system and understand our expectations gives us an advantage from where we were at this stage last year,” Kieran Purcell Jacobs says. “The challenge for us will be building off of last year’s momentum to continue to grow in the direction that Aces’ fans have become accustomed to through our great tradition and legacy. This team is looking to create their own chapter in Aces’ history.”

1989Rob National Paterson Player Of The Year Fred Schmalz knew he had a great talent when Rob Paterson transferred in 1988 to the University of Evansville from Cal-San Diego, where he led the Tritons to third place in the NCAA Division III tournament. Schmalz found out just how good in 1988, when the Division I rookie led the Aces in scoring with 15 goals and four assists for 34 points. That was just the start. As a senior in 1989, Paterson led the nation in goals scored and set the UE record that still exists today when he scored 27 goals. His 61 total points and 11 game-winning goals that sea- son are also the best in school history.

Paterson’s scoring total, combined with Mike Halbig Evansville’s 19-4 record and number seven national ranking, led Paterson to being selected as a first team All-American. Soon afterward, he became the Aces’ first national player of the year when he was selected as recipient of the

1990David National Scoring Weir Leader When he came to UE from Scotland in 1987, a pro career looked like no more than a dream for young David Weir. He was big, but not fast or strong, and he missed part of his freshman year with appendicitis. Recruited as a central defender, he was moved to forward as a sopho- more by coach Fred Schmalz, and the stronger, faster Weir responded with 11 goals in 1989. He followed with one of the best years in Aces’ history in 1990 when he led UE to a number Glasgow Rangers (2) Rangers Glasgow one national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Final Four by scoring 24 goals and making 11 assists for 59 points, the second highest total in Aces’ history. Weir was the MCC Player of the Year, the NCAA Division I national leader in goals scored, and a first team All-American. Weir became the first American collegiate player to compete for a European team in the World Cup when he made Scotland’s team in 1997. At age 37, he continues to compete at the highest levels in Europe for the Glasgow Rangers, and is considered one of Scotland’s best and most popular players of the current generation.
