THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 36, Number 3 Thursday, January 23, 2020 3FJOWFOUJOH$MBTTJDT by Edmund Lawler Dan Schaaf (right) records dialogue for his latest project, “Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler,” with Sherri Waddle-Cummings. Photos by Paul Kemiel Suddenly, quite by accident, Dan Schaaf discov- ered a wildly creative artistic pursuit — breathing new life into classic silent fi lms by composing musi- cal scores and scripting dialogue performed by local stage actors. “Channel 20 used to run silent fi lms at midnight,” Schaaf recalls of his epiphany in the late 1990s. “They ran the Fritz Lang classic ‘Metropolis,’ a 1927 sci-fi that I had never seen. I fi gured I needed to see it once in my life, so I set the VCR to record it at midnight.” He watched it the next morning and was enchant- ed by the epic work of cinema from the legendary German director. But there was one problem. “It had this dreadful musical score that sounded like it came from a Laurel and Hardy comedy, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fi lm,” Schaaf says. “I told myself, ‘I can do better than this.’” And he did. Schaaf, who fi rst began composing music as a Marquette High School student and later while studying English and electrical engineering at Pur- due University, penned a score for “Metropolis.” Un- Sherri Waddle-Cummings infuses emotion into her dialogue for the fi lm. • The Heart of Oracle” - in Under an Hour
“The Heart of Oracle” - in Under an Hour Martin Widlake Database Performance, Architecture & Training Ora600 Limited [email protected] http://mwidlake.wordpress.com Twitter - @mdwidlake ORA600 Ltd 1 Abstract Yes, this really is an overview of how the Oracle RDBMS engine works in under an hour. The Oracle database engine is a highly complex system. However, at it's core, what it does 95% of the time is a relatively simple set of processes. You need know no more than what a SELECT statement is but by the end of this session you will understand how Oracle puts data into the database, how it is taken out, what consistent gets really are, why redo is crucial, how everything is just tables, indexes and SQL and the way each session sees only real data even as it changes. All of this can be understood at a general level in 50 45 minutes {but I will talk fast…Faster } ORA600 Ltd 2 Who am I and why am I doing this Talk? • Doing Oracle since “Right Said Fred” and “Shakespears Sister” were in the charts, mostly as a developer, development DBA, DB Designer & Performance guy. • Started as a Form 2.3/Reportwriter 1.1 “builder” and kept asking stupid questions like “How does that work then?”. Becoming a DBA-type was inevitable. I’m still asking the same question. • It seems to me there are very few “intro” talks anymore, so I’ve started doing some. (They’re harder to prepare than “Geek” talks…) • I’d love to know what you think, positive or negative.

  • Brecik - All the Way
q feature: BRECIK - ALL THE WAY During this time in isolation I have been sitting back and listening to artists that I really enjoy and their greatest hits. I felt really inspired and as I sat there listening to a few tracks of my own, I was really proud of the colourful history of these tunes. I thought… there’s no better time to put all of my best tracks together, some that were released as singles and some that probably should have been! So I decided to create a few new songs, release songs that have never been heard before and bring back my previous hits to create the greatest hits collection ‘BRECIK – ALL THE WAY…’ After releasing three albums and three EP’s I gratefully had plenty of favourite tracks to select from. Considering the amazing feedback and some very special dm’s on Instagram, I concentrated on the songs and what they meant to me and why I originally decided to record them. It was a lot of fun, and from these conversations ‘BRECIK – ALL THE WAY’ was created. Twenty Five tracks that really define me as an artist and my life through music. ‘BRECIK – ALLTHE WAY…’ starts pretty much at the beginning with one of the first songs I ever recorded ‘Breakaway’ a cover of the 80’s Big Pig classic, I hadn’t long been living in Melbourne was out doing a few gigs but I really wanted to cement my own sound. My latest track is a fantastic new version of The True Queen of Australian music, Kate Ceberano’s ‘Bedroom Eyes’.

This article scrutinizes five of the band’s music videos: “Goodbye Cruel World” (1991), “I Don’t Care” (1992), “Stay” (1992), “All the Queen’s Horses” (2019) and “When She Finds You” (2019; the last two filmed 26 years after the duo’s turbulent split), all of them displaying a strong affinity with Gothicism.

  • It Was the Reunion No One Ever Thought They'd See But, 26 Years After A
he 1993 Ivor Novellos should have been one of the greatest moments of Marcella Detroit’s life. The singer-songwriter, one half of the mega-selling pop group Shakespears Sister, was on-stage to collect the band’s Ivor for Best Contemporary Collection Of Songs for their smash hit album, Hormonally Yours. Sadly, the other half of Shakespears Sister, former Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey, had other ideas. Fahey did not Tattend the ceremony, but her publisher, 2005 Music Week Strat Award winner Peter Reichardt of EMI, read out a statement that made it clear the band was finished and wished Detroit “all the best for the future”, before declaring: “All’s well that ends well”. The trouble was that, while Detroit knew all was definitely not well between her and her musical partner, this was the first time she’d heard that the band was officially over. “Getting that confirmation was very emotional for me,” says Detroit, 26 years later. “I have to admit I went back to the table and sobbed silently to myself…” Yes, as splits go, Shakespears Sister’s was as messy and public as humanly possible. But, as with most things to do with this most intriguing of pop groups, there was more to it than met the eye. And now that they are, against all odds, back together (“Hell froze over and pigs have flown!” declares Detroit), it’s time to get to the bottom of it all, once and for all… eeting Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit at their manager’s office in 2019, on the day Shakespears Sister’s return is formally announced, you’d never know they didn’t speak to each other for 25 years.
