This is a rather short, less than 60 pages, but interesting story. It's an historical romance with a Regency setting (1818). Daniel and Aubrey were college mate and friends years before; one night they gave up to the passion inside a carriage. Nothing more than a fast encounter, something Aubrey would be glad to prolong, but family issue took Daniel away for ten years. Now Daniel is a wealthy widower with two sons, and Aubrey a rake with a married lover and two illegitimate sons. When Daniel returns to London after the death of his wife, he has no intention to marry again, but he knows that he needs to frequent the ton for social interest. The first night he meets again Aubrey, the passion flares but the morning after Daniel recovers his intellectual faculties and fears the social consequences of his actions: he rejects Aubrey in the worst way. As I said the story is not very long (a thing I regretted also in the other book I read by Shawn Lane), but it's well plotted. The supporting characters, Aubrey's lover Maribel, for example, are hinted but with an own personality, and also the setting is decipted in few words, but in a good way. Actually maybe the fact that the story is so short is one of its merit: it has a feeling of a complete short story, not haphazardly put together for the purpose to write an M/M romance in frilly dress. For example Daniel and Aubrey make sex in every room available, but always remember to lock the door. they never forget that they are not only an illicit couple, but also an illegal ones. Daniel and Aubrey represent two classical characters of the Regency romance: Daniel is the prim an proper gentleman, the man who always makes the right thing, the good father and the faithful husband. Aubrey instead is the rake, the destitute nobleman who roams in the wealthy circle only thanks to the family name. Aubrey also respects the classical behavior of the rake, a man who when falls in love he falls hard. I would like to read more on these two, how they manage to make things work, since it appears that no one of the supposedly secrets in this story is unknown to the chat of the Ton. Another Chance by Shawn Lane. The Story of & Shawn Lane. Good evening everybody, in today’s video we’ll take a closer look at the history between guitar hero Buckethead and guitar legend, Shawn Lane. For those who don’t know, Shawn Lane was a child prodigy already playing lead guitar and classical piano in clubs at the age of 14 in the late 1970’s. In the early 1980’s bootlegs of Shawn’s playing was distributed among guitar enthusiasts by Mike Varney, the founder of shred guitar music label, . (Shawn Lane) What Mike Varney does is get people on the phone and starts playing them tapes. And he had bootlegs tapes of me, so whenever he talked to he’d subject him to these tapes. So they all knew about me. (Paul Gilbert interview) Shawn Lane, the most terrifying guy of all time. A lot of the Shawn Lane stuff almost sounds like he’s doing it two-handed, but it’s all done with his left hand. Completely crazy stuff but he’s somehow doing it with one hand. When I’m up at Mike Varney’s house, he’s got some video tapes of him and he’s doing these old Hendrix songs and stuff and doing them just perfectly. So, whilst he was teaching a teenage pre-bucket Buckethead, Paul Gilbert gave him a bootleg cassette of Shawn Lane. And just like every other guitarist who’d heard the bootleg at the time, Young Buckethead’s mind was blown. The bootleg of Shawn Lane and his style of playing would highly influence Buckethead, and is the origins of some of Bucketheads more complex playing, such as the 8 finger tapping technique. (Shawn Lane) There was a tape I made a while ago that was influenced by the modern classical composer Conlon Nancarrow. He composes by punching holes in piano rolls. So he sits there for years punching holes in these roll mechanisms. And I liked what he was doing so I tried to copy it on a guitar. Using this editing technique where I would string together things on guitar by playing something, and then editing another thing right behind it, and then another thing, and it just sounded insane. And Buckethead got a bootleg of that song and had no idea that was a construction from editing, he thought I was really playing it. So he tried to figure out a way it could be done by using two hands on the neck and he got pretty close. And that’s the origin of some of the crazy stuff he does. Yep, Shawn Lane had composed a song that was physically impossible to play and Buckethead almost did it. What an Alien. That bootleg song would eventually be reworked and released on Shawn’s album the Tri-Tone Fascination called Kaiser Nancarrow. Shawn Lane and Buckethead would eventually become friends in the early 1990’s and even shared the stage together on April 30th 1997 in New York City. On two separate occasions, Shawn Lane and Buckethead had planned on making an album together. The first time in 1993. (Shawn Lane) We’re trying to do a recording with him and me..it’ll be something really psycho. The second time in mid-2003 whilst Buckethead was on hiatus from Guns n Roses, along with musician Henry Kaiser. Who famously gave Buckethead his custom GS guitar mentioned in our video ‘Unsolved Buckethead mysteries’. Unfortunately, the planned album, which no doubt would have been the ultimate guitar albums, never happened. Because on September 26th 2003, Shawn Lane passed away at the age 0f 40. Shawn had battled an autoimmune disease he’d had since the age of 12. A disease that caused arthritis, weight gain, weak joints and lung problems. A few days later Buckethead’s website posted an image of Shawn along with the words “I feel very lucky for the few moments I got to spend with him and they are very special memories. He was by far the greatest guitar player that ever lived. More importantly, he was a great man.” Buckethead would further pay tribute to Shawn Lane at a live show in Shawn’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, holding up a sign that read “Long live Shawn Lane, the greatest of all time”. He’d also mention Shawn in the 2017 Coming Alive podcast interview. (Buckethead Interview) He was from outer space. He was probably the most incredible musician I’ve ever seen or heard. It’s beyond what I can understand. I got to hang around with him a few times and he took in so much information, like he could just read many books in a day. And he had a memory here he could remember everything. He’s an insane inspiration. It’s sad he’s gone but he’s not gone in a lot of way. I think people like that, their energy is way beyond their physical self. He’ll be around forever, just like Bruce Lee, Jimi Hendrix, their energy is bigger than their physical. As you can tell, Shawn Lane was a huge influence on Buckethead aswell as other guitar greats such as Paul Gilbert, and more. Despite spending his life fighting constant pain and illness, Shawn Lane released some of the most beautiful musical compositions ever created. And, whilst there’s so many words you can call the late Shawn lane, the words inscribed at his final resting place might say it best Unforgettable. Irreplaceable. Immortal. Biography. Shawn Lane (March 21, 1963 – September 26, 2003) Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Lane began playing piano with his sisters at the age of eight, but did not play guitar seriously until he was ten. At age 12–13 he began to practice heavily. At fourteen, he became the lead guitarist for (BOA) and alongside members, including drummer , toured over the next four years opening shows for bands including REO Speedwagon, , Outlaws, , and Blue Öyster Cult. During 1979 Shawn played in The Streets, recording studio demos with Andy Tanas on bass, Chris Craig on drums and Jimmy Henderson on guitar, almost securing a deal with . He was an American musician who released two studio albums and collaborated with a variety of musicians including Ringo Starr, , , , , , , and many others. After studying the piano, he mastered the guitar, which he played with exceptional speed. 1963. Shawn was born. On March 21, 1963, Shawn was born in Memphis, TN. He quickly took up vocal, cello and piano lessons. By age 10, he was learning to play the guitar. Where the Mississippi meets Mississippi sits Memphis, TN. In a land where music is reshaped every quarter century or so, Shawn Lane is at home. It is country large, liquid, and languid enough to take art and twist it anew. And Shawn does his share. It started for the Memphis kid (born March 21, 1963) at age 4 by accompanying the vocal lessons of his mother and older sisters, playing cello in school, and taking piano lessons. He picked up the guitar at age 10, and realized he did a lot better on that instrument. Progressing very fast, he was playing blues rock in clubs around Memphis by the age of 12. His early highschool bands include Tyfoyd and Savage. 1975. High school bands, Tyfoyd and Savage. By the age of 12, Shawn progressed to playing blues rock clubs around Memphis and his early high school bands were “Tyfoyd” and “Savage”. By 1978, the big buzz around town in Memphis was a 15-year old guitar prodigy named Shawn Lane. Southern boogie meisters Black Oak Arkansas set up an audition for Shawn, and hired him by the end of 1978. The first show BOA did with Shawn was in Kansas, on the same bill as Pat Travers. During 1979 the band played mostly bars and showcase rooms, and did some outdoor festivals. BOA also played at the inaugural party that Bill Clinton threw when he became Governor of Arkansas. 1978. Black Oak Arkansas & The Streets. Shawn was hired to play in Black Oak Arkansas at the age of 15 and briefly played in a band called The Streets. After BOA’s lead singer Jim “Dandy” Mangrum decided to call it a day and become an evangelist in late 1979, Shawn briefly played in a band called The Streets. This group, with former BOA bassist Andy Tanas on lead vocals, showcased at the Starwood in Hollywood and recorded some studio demos, but fell through quickly after passing up on a record deal with Pasha Records. Jim Dandy, Shawn, and drummer Chris Craig then reformed BOA, now featuring Shawn’s highschool buddies Kinley Wolfe on bass and Billy Batte on keys. BOA originally was a rowdy Southern Rock band, but by 1982 the final lineup sounded more like a fusion ensemble in the vein of UK and Return To Forever. Fortunately Jim Dandy had the sense to give his young band mates the freedom to showcase their talents between versions of Hot ‘N’ Nasty and Jim Dandy To The Rescue. However, although several studio demos were recorded over the years, a BOA studio album with Shawn never materialized. At 18, burnt out from touring, Shawn settled down to widen and refine. While refraining from playing gigs, he immersed himself in books, movies, and records. In 1983, while in L.A., he played on a studio demo by former BOA bass player Andy Tanas. After his “sabbatical”, Shawn started playing with various bands round the South. The proliferation of his demos and recordings in underground tape trading networks made him a guitar hero without having released one single record. Mike Varney was the first to capture him on record: the 4th volume of Shrapnel’s U.S. Metal (1985) features a guitar solo by Shawn called Stratosphere II. 1985. The Willys and studio work with others. Shawn’s group The Willys rattles the Memphis scene and by 1987 the group attracts the attention of some labels with their own original material. Shawn does studio work for many artists during the 80’s and led to a deal for his first solo album Powers of Ten by the early 90’s. During the mid 80′s, Shawn rattled the Memphis scene with his own band, the Willys, famed for their Hendrix and ZZ Top covers. By 1987 the group had worked up some original material to play alongside the cover tunes and attracted the attention of some labels. But a combination of botched management decisions and bad timing prevented that from happening. Rock stars like Kirk Hammett and George Lynch, staying at the legendary Memphis Peabody Hotel while on tour, caught The Willys in the act and spread the word about Shawn’s amazing talents. He once mesmerized Billy Gibbons, who literally fell off his chair when hearing Shawn, and blew away Ted Nugent in an on-stage riff duel. During his Willy years, Shawn did studio work for artists like Larry Raspberry, Mark Lindsay, Robert Duvall (yes, the actor!), Jim Jamison (ex- Survivor), DC Talk (Christian rap), Al Kapone (gangsta rap), Joe Walsh, Sam and Dave, Tony Joe White, and Alex Chilton. He was was also invited to join Alice Cooper for a tour, but he declined. In 1987, he played on a never-released Ringo Starr solo album. In 1989, he played on the album featuring Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings. His leads on this record (check out Angels Love Bad Men), and Memphis session guitarist Reggie Young playing Shawn’s demo tape for Warner Bros. boss Jim Ed Norman, led to a deal for his first solo album Powers Of Ten. In 1991, Shawn impressed the world with his sophisticated soloing on Mark Varney’s shred fest Centrifugal Funk. Shawn spent the following two years writing, arranging, and recording POT in his home studio. The album was released in 1992, immediately leading to a Best New Talent award from Guitar Player Magazine and a second place in the Best Keyboard Player category in Keyboard Player Magazine. To support his debut, Shawn toured the U.S. with his POT live band featuring Barry Bays on bass and on drums. This group is captured live on the disc With Powers Of Ten: Live!, released in 2001. 1991. “Powers of Ten Live!” band and instructional videos. In 1992, Shawn releases his studio album after much writing, arranging and recording. He tours the US with his Powers of Ten, Live! band and produces two instructional guitar videos, Power Solos and Power Licks. After that he hooked up with DDT, featuring the sons of Memphis producer Jim Dickinson on drums and guitar and Paul Taylor on bass. They played many Wednesday night gigs in the Memphis area to shape up the material for what was to become Shawn’s second Warner Bros. album. However, it would take another couple of years for Lane/DDT favorites like Minarets and Nine=101 to see the light on CD. During ’92-’94, Shawn also produced records for other artists (e.g. On The Way Home by David Ormonde Thomas and a Steve Harris album), was involved in teaching and developing curricula for conservatories in Europe, and made two instructional guitar videos. As 1994 was drawing to a close, Shawn teamed up with Swedish bassist to record Abstract Logic with drummer Kofi Baker. The duo played a beautiful set on drummer Michael Shrieve’s Two Doors album the following year. 1995. On tour in the US, Europe and China. Shawn extensively tours the US, Europe and China and plays on four more albums. During 1995-1997, Lane extensively toured the U.S. and Europe with drummer (AKA Apt. Q-258), playing a highly sophisticated, all- improvised style of music. Four albums, Temporal Analogues Of Paradise (1996), Time Is The Enemy (1997), the all-acoustic Zenhouse (1999), and Personae (2002), evidence the intense musical chemistry within this trio. In September 1995, Lane, and Swedish drummer Anders Johansson joined Chinese pop singer Wei-Wei’s live band for a tour along mainland China’s largest venues. In 1997, Shawn played on ’s Fission. Shawn’s long-awaited second solo effort, The Tri-Tone Fascination, was finally released in 1999 through the newly established indie label . Not very pleased with the first master, Shawn decided to remaster the album and release a second version of TTF. This instantly turned the first release, with two extra tracks, into a collector’s item that easily outbids both POT releases. After parting with Sipe in the fall of 1997, Shawn ventured more and more into the realms of Eastern music. In late 1999, they were joined by Indian percussionist/vocalist V. Selvaganesh for a European tour. This trio’s latest disc, Good People In Times Of Evil (2000), presents the more ethereal dimensions of Shawn’s playing. Also released in 2000 was Doug Scarborough’s solo album Mood Du Jour, featuring Shawn on three tracks. 1999. Releases “Tri-Tone Fascination” and plays in “Time Bandits” In 1999, Shawn establishes his own indie label, releases another studio album and by early 2000 was gigging with the Time Bandits, a Memphis band. In 2001, several planned releases, including Shawn’s David Lynch tribute Inside A Dream, a Lane/DDT live album, and the long-awaited re- release of POT, were shelved. Shawn also suffered serious health problems during this period but made a quick recovery and soon started gigging with the Time Bandits, a Memphis band. By 2002, things were looking up again for the Memphis Monster: he and the Swede reunited with Jeff Sipe for club tours in the Southeastern U.S. and Europe, playing a mixture of their heyday material and Eastern rags. The latest Bardo release Icon is the first studio recording of Hellborg, Lane and the Vinayakram Brothers (also known as SULUH) and captures the beautiful music that was brought to the European stages in 2001. 2002. India and European tour. Before Shawn’s death on September 26, 2003, one of his long-cherished dreams came true: he traveled to India for a short tour. In every city they played, they were hailed as true rock stars. In February 2003 one of Shawn’s long-cherished dreams came true: he, joined for the occasion by Italian drummer Andrea Marchesini, traveled to the Indian subcontinent for a short tour. In every city they played – including New Delhi, Calcutta, and Shillong – they were hailed as true rock stars. After the hugely successful Indian adventure a short European tour followed. In early September 2003, however, Shawn developed severe breathing problems and had to undergo various medical tests while preparing for a new album with Ginger Baker. He was expected to have to remain on medical oxygen for the remainder of his life, but passed away on September 26, 2003. Another Chance by Shawn Lane.
