FA Vase Winners: 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011 WHITLEY BAY FC BW3 Welcome to Hillheads WHITLEY BAY v CELTIC NATION

EBAC NORTHERN LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION Tuesday 12th February 2013

Good evening and welcome to Hillheads Park for tonight’s Ebac Northern League game against Celtic Nation. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all Celtic Nation players, officials and supporters who have made the journey from and I hope they enjoy their evening with us. Under their former name of Gillford Park, tonight’s visitors gained promotion to the Northern League First Division this season. They are establishing themselves well and are sitting comfortably in mid table. This is only the second time our clubs have met, the previous occasion being in a League Cup tie here at Hillheads three years ago. Following two hard fought away games, at Ashington and Bedlington, we returned to Hillheads on Sunday evening for a very special friendly against Newcastle United’s Europa League opponents Metalist Kharkiv from Ukraine. Despite the wind and rain it was a great evening and a fantastic experience for our team to compete against some of the very best players in Europe. No doubt at some point in the future there will be a quiz question asking who scored Whitley’s first ever goal in a European fixture at Hillheads. It was of course LeePaul Scroggins, whose 11th minute goal gave us the lead against a side ranked 29th in Europe and although Metalist soon equalised, we gave them a really good game and thoroughly deserved the draw. Even though it was only a friendly, hastily arranged to give the Ukrainians match practice ahead of their Europa League tie, organising a game against such prestigious opponents involved a huge amount of work behind the scenes for club officials, toge ther with invaluable help from Supporters Club members on the day. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed to what was a historic and memorable day for Whitley Bay Football Club. Paul McIlduff Chairman HOWAY THE BAY! As Ian Chandler said after the game ‘We played well but it just wasn’t our day. Their goalkeeper saved everything we threw at him.’
