Southport celebrates its Halloween Parade and Party

Zombies, monsters, princesses and animals walked the streets of South- port on Oct. 24. The city hosted its annual Halloween Parade and Party with more events than ever before. The parade, grand marshalled by the Shrine Clowns, started at Southport Elementary and traveled to the Southport Community Center where hundreds of guests joined dressed in costume for the party. Celebrations consisted of live music, food sold by the Lions Club of Southport Inc., free trick-or-treating, a walk through a zombie village and a zombie race for the children. Captain Spaulding awaited eagerly for visitors to walk through his cave, startling them as they did. Other ghouls roamed through the park as children took a haunted hay ride. 8 Week of October 29 – November 4, 2015 • ss-times.com SOUTHSIDE The Southside Times

By Nicole Davis It was the city’s goal to make their Halloween celebration bigger and better, and they did just that according to youth programming coordinator Nick Schwab. With more than 2,000 people in atten- dance, that’s nearly 500 more than last year. “Social media for the event was unbelievable,” Schwab said. “The weather was another big part. It was 70 degrees. You can’t beat that for late October. With the weather being nice last week, people were saying we should get out. I think we keep it relatively cheap. It’s an event that everyone can at- tend.” Greenwood’s next community-wide event is Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 12, 9 a.m. at the com- munity center.
