Research Report

The purpose of this research session was to continue earlier efforts to learn about the cli

ent’s immigrant Heitz ancestors. There were four specific goals of this session. First, the Civil War pension file for Anthony Heitz was to be ordered from the National Archives (NARA) with the goal of learning about his wife and children. Anthony Heitz, who settled in Ohio County, West Virginia after the Civil War, had already been proven to be a member of the ancestral Heitz family.

The second item of interest was the Civil War pension file for Nick Hotz that was obtained in the previous research session. This file was to be reviewed in an effort to prove his connection to the ancestral Heitz family.

Thirdly, vital records for the children of John Peter Edams/Idems and his wife, Josephine were to be sought and obtained in an effort to prove the maiden name of their mother. If one of these records included it could prove her connection to the ancestral Heitz family. Josephine’s maiden name

Lastly, the search for the Heitz family hometown near Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, France was to continue with a search of the following towns: , , Eschau, , , , , , Benfeld, , , , , , , , , , and Lampertheim. If the family could be identified there, the births of Lena Heitz and her siblings were to be obtained, as well as a marriage record for their parents, Anton and Marie.

The file was received very late in this research session. At that time there was not enough time to fully assess the file for any useful information. After briefly skimming the 100-page file, it appeared that there was no information in it about his wife and children. However, there were two items of significant interest in the file. The first was that on pages 81 and 82 they discussed his service record in some detail. The second was that on page 63 of the file Anthony Heitz provided his personal statement of when and where he was born 1835 in

Pension of Nick Hotz

After the above pension file was ordered, the research session began with a detailed review of the Civil War pension file for Nick Hotz of Toledo, Ohio. The goal of this review was to determine whether he was connected to the ancestral Heitz family. The following details summarize the most significant information from this file.

Notes from Pension File of Nicholaus Hotz Soldier: Nicholaus Hotz

Application approved: widow paid $8 per month (14 Sep 1879-19 Mar 1886) paid $2 per child per month (until age 16) starting on 14 Sep 1879.

Neither he nor Maria Jonas Floering (p. 33) Brother in law of widow (married to her sister) Statement mentioned that Nicholas Hotz worked at Lenks Brewery (engineer) Note: Brother of Jonas testified that the farm where Nick Hotz died was in Michigan and that he was only there for his health, having lived the rest of the time in Toledo.

Valentine Brown (p. 37) Stated that Nick Hotz worked at the brewery before the war and then came back after the war.

Christian Zaenger (p. 55) Stated that he met Nick Hotz in fall of 1862 – Co I and Co J sent to reconnoiter, NH fell in the water from which he got a cough. Last saw him in 1864.

Christian Walter (p. 67) Stated in German with translation that in December 6 in West Virginia we had to wade through a creek (Lup (p. 67)/Loopy (p. 94) creek) the water of which reached up to our neck. It was then that I contracted my disability, and after that, N. Hotz suffered continually with a dry cough and difficulty of breathing.

Deposition of Widow (p. 85-88) Q: Did you know his father, or mother or any of his family? A: Only his brother who died a good many years ago of dropsy. His father and mother and sister all lived in the Old Country. His father and mother are both dead a good many years ago.

If this file were for a member of the ancestral family, it would have been wonderful to have all the details provided in the file. It would also lead to finding the family in church records in Ohio. However, the final question and answer shown above regarding the birth family of Nick Hotz indicated that his parents and his only sibling never left Europe. This information did not match any of the known details of the ancestral Heitz family. This strongly suggested that Nick Hotz was not part of the ancestral Heitz family. 6

Josephine Edams

Over the last research sessions it had become well established that the Josephine who married John Peter Edams/Idems was probably Josephine Heitz. However, no records had yet been found to absolutely prove this connection. At this point, the next best option for obtaining such information was to seek out records for the births, marriages, and deaths of the children of John Peter Edams/Idems and his wife, Josephine. It was expected that at least one of these records would likely include Jose connection to the ancestral Heitz family. phine’s maiden name and prove her

In the previous research conducted for this family there were five children identified who were born between 1860 and 1875. Josephine and John Peter Edams were married at some point just prior to 1860, before the time that the county officials began keeping records of these types of events. The births of the children were only inconsistently recorded John

It was possible that Kate died between 1870 and 1875 with — Catherine (born 1875) being given the same name. However, there was no way to prove this hypothesis at this point.

Searching the Toledo area for anyone with a surname similar to Edams/Idems, one entry of interest was located in the 1880 Census. This was a Mary Edems who was 19 years old and born in Ohio.2 She was an excellent match for the oldest of the Edams children. It appeared

She was working as a servant and was single. Whoever reported her information to the census enumerator indicated that both of her parents came from Prussia.

Having identified Mary in the 1880 Census, she was next located in Toledo city directories. She first appeared there in 1878 working as a domestic servant. The following chart demonstrated what was found for this family in the city directories between 1878 and 1883.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation with the daughters Kate and Catherine, we could not tell whether the teacher by that name belonged to the ancestral family group. Likewise, it was not certain whether this Charles was the same one that was being sought. The only one that could be traced forward in confidence was Mary Edems. Thus, for the present, the search focused solely on her.

Since some Lucas County, Ohio marriages were being recorded by the mid-1880s, the indexes of these records were searched for any woman by this name. One was found, but the record proved to be for the marriage of her daughter rather than for her own.13

On 27 December 1915, Edward G. Koehrman and Helen G. May were married in Toledo, Ohio. Helen was reportedly born around 1888 and was the daughter of Mary Edams and Elisha May. This evidence showed that Mary Edams was married before 1888 and that her

husband was Elisha May, but it did not reference Mary’s parents at all.

Mary (Edems) May was mother to two children Howard and Helen. These censuses placed their births in the mid-1880s. A brief search— in Ohio birth records revealed the all births of both children and reported Mary’s maiden name as Edams/Edens/Edoms— consistent with known variations of the family surname.ed as twoHoward’s different birth years was on5 March May 1886 inor Toledo.1887. It Helen’s seemed birth likely was that found she was twice born report in 1887, but the earlier date —was still possible. Thus, both dates were recorded for accuracy.

Now that the 1885 birth date of their first child was proven, a second and more in-depth attempt was made to locate a marriage record for Elisha May and Mary Edams between 1882 and 1885. After carefully combing each marriage collection for this part of Ohio, it became certain that their marriage was simply not recorded by the county. If their marriage could be found it would require searching Roman Catholic parish records in Toledo, Ohio. For the sake of time this church record search was not begun in this session, but rather included as a recommendation for the next research session.

Area Search around Strasbourg

The final goal of this research session was to continue searching the towns around Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, France in order to establish the exact hometown of the ancestral Heitz family. The births of Lena Heitz and her siblings (circa 1834-1850) were sought in the civil records from these towns, all within about 10 miles of Strasbourg:

Lingolsheim, Entzheim, Eschau, Plobsheim, Dorlisheim, Nordhouse, Erstein, Osthouse, Benfeld, Huttenheim, Sermersheim, Krautergersheim, Ittenheim, Schiltigheim, Offendorf, Schirrhein, Westhoffen, Landersheim, and Lampertheim.

11

This town was about 40 kilometers northwest of Strasbourg. The only connection between Steinbourg and the city of Strasbourg was that Strasbourg was the capital city of the region

12

in which both were situated. If this were the correct hometown it could have taken many more hours of searching in the area before the town would have been identified solely due to its distance from the capital city. It was also of interest that Steinbourg also did not appear at all on the list of towns with Heitz residents that had previously been found on Geopatronyme.com for the years 1885-1915.

Having established these facts, the search moved forward into the civil records from Steinbourg. As before, the search focused first on the 10-year indexes for the years 1833- 1842 and 1843-1852. During this time period there were 22 births recorded there for children with the Heitz surname.17 A careful review of the index revealed that many of them could fit the ancestral family group. With only one exception where he was reported as a laborer (1838 birth of son, Jean), all of the other entries indicated that Antoine Heitz was a weaver. The family residence was also consistently reported as Steinbourg. There was an unexpected child found in this family group Marie Anne, who was born in 1835. Since she did not immigrate with her family in

1852, —the death records were searched between 1835 and 1852. No record was found for her death. Thus it appeared that she probably married prior to the family leaving for America. A search for her marriage record has been included in the recommendations for the next research session.

The son, Ignace, who was born in 1843 was immediately followed by another son with the same name. It was common practice to reuse a name if the child died young. Therefore, a search immediately ensued to confirm the death of the older Ignace. As expected, his death was found on 3 March 1844, about two weeks after his first birthday. It was also noted that in addition to his father, Antoine Heitz, the second witness for his death was a Francois Christ, who was a 36-year-old weaver. It was extremely likely that this was an uncle of the deceased child, and brother to Marie Anne Christ.

Since the family emigrated in 1852 it was not necessary to search for any younger children. However, it was advisable to search for any older children. The births were searched in 1829-1832, but no older children were found for this family group. Having searched five years prior to the birth of Charles (the oldest child) it was clear that this was the complete family group. This demonstrated with some authority that there was no child in the family named Nicholaus Heitz (or Hotz) and that Henry J. Heitz was also not an immediate family member. Henry may have been a cousin or some other relation, but without extensive research this would be extremely difficult to prove. With the exception of these two men, the remaining seven children that were previously identified had all been found in these birth records.

The final record to be obtained during this research session was the marriage record for the parents, Antoine Heitz and Marie Anne Christ. They were married on 14 April 1834, also in Steinbourg.28

Bride: Marie Anne Christ, 22 years old, landowner, legitimate, resident of Steinbourg Bride’s Birth: 15 February 1812 in Steinbourg Bride’s Parents: Francois Christ, 59 years old, weaver, and Madeline Esets[?], 56 years old, residents of Steinbourg Note: Francois Christ, 26 years old, weaver is also a witness for this marriage. He is almost certainly Marie’s brother.

This marriage record provided several vital pieces of information. It included the exact birth dates for the bride and groom, as well as the names, ages, occupations and residences

ofas their parents. As with their son’s death record, the name Francois Christ showed up here a witness. His age and importance strongly suggested that he was Marie’s older brother. Conclusion

This research session was extremely fruitful and productive. Using the details from Nick s Civil War pension file it was concluded that he was not a member of the ancestral

Hotz’Heitz family. Further research in France confirmed this fact as well. Furthermore, Henry J. Heitz was also disqualified as a member of this family. Time was spent attempting to prove this will require further research in the thatnext Josephinesession. Edems’ maiden name was Heitz, but

The Civil War pension file for Anthony Heitz of Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia was sent for early in this session and arrived shortly before this report was prepared. The entire file is included as an Appendix on the project web page. While the file did not appear to include details about his wife and children, it did state that he was born in Steinburg (aka Steinbourg), France. The vital records from this town were searched and the ancestral Heitz family was finally found! In the short time that remained we were able to organize the complete family group as well as locate the marriage of their parents. The stage is now set to extend the family another generation or more in the records from Steinbourg, Alsace- Lorraine, France.

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to assist you in learning about these ancestors. We are thrilled to finally have the correct hometown and we look forward to continuing to research this family in France and the United States again very soon!
