BGOV BIOGRAPHY

By Erik Wasson, Bloomberg News David Perdue's expertise is as a corporate turnaround artist. He was the chief executive officer of shoemaker Reebok and retailer Dollar General. The 2014 Senate race was his first foray into politics. He campaigned as an outsider, complaining about career politicians and decision-makers without business experience. ``If you're as outraged as I am by the size and scope of our government, by the amount of money they take from our pockets and by the inexcusable childish behavior exhibited in Washington right now, then I hope you'll give this outsider from a chance,'' Perdue said in a campaign radio ad. ``Fixing big problems like this is what I've done all my life. It's what I do.'' According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he told a campaign rally, ``I'm not going (to Washington) to be invited to the best cocktail parties in Georgetown. I'm going to get in a dog fight.'' Perdue said that he favors repealing the 2010 health-care law and replacing it with a free-market system designed to reduce rates. He opposes any immigration bill that creates a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and says the federal government has been ``overtly hostile towards domestic energy producers.'' ``We have to eliminate the billions of dollars in failed government programs and redundant agencies,'' Perdue said on his campaign website, where he argued for passage of a balanced budget amendment. He said House members should be allowed to serve only three terms. He favors an overhaul of the tax code, replacing it with a flat tax. He doesn't shy away from references to his wealth, for which he makes no apologies. His tax returns show he's made $55 million over the past 10 years. ``You've seen nice guys like me before, without a voting record, go up to Washington and lose themselves,'' Perdue said at one campaign stop. ``Here's why it's not going to happen to me: I've been there. They're not going to offer me anything I haven't seen before.'' Early Years Perdue was born in Macon, Georgia, to two school teachers. His wife, Bonnie, whom he met in first grade, is a teacher, and he points to his long-standing support of the Head Start program and his two-year service from 2006 as the chairman of the National Commission on Literacy and Workforce Development. He has two degrees from . While in graduate school, he began working for an international management consulting firm, Kurt Salmon Associates. He lived a globetrotting business career, spending time in Asia, Europe and the United States. He held executive positions with Sara Lee and Haggar before joining Reebok, where he eventually became president and CEO. During his tenure, Reebok negotiated a contract with the that ultimately made Reebok the exclusive uniform and sideline apparel provider for the league from 2001 until 2012. He left Reebok for Pillowtex, a financially troubled textile company. He stayed seven months, leaving shortly before the company shut down and threw 4,000 North Carolinians out of work. He blamed an inability to raise sufficient capital in a short time. Then, he moved to Dollar General, where as CEO he led a period of explosive growth to 8,500 stores from 5,900 nationwide. After leaving Dollar General in 2007, Perdue served as a Georgia Ports Authority board member. Along with his cousin, former two-term Governor and others, he co-founded an international trading firm, Perdue Partners. Georgia's two-term senator, , announced early in 2013 that he wouldn't seek re-election in 2014, and Perdue a few months later decided to enter the race, joining an already crowded Republican primary field that eventually numbered seven, including three members of the House and a former Georgia secretary of State. Perdue pointed out that his four principal foes had a combined 63 years' experience in elective office. He finished first in the primary. No candidate received a majority of the vote, so a runoff election was conducted between Perdue and the second-place finisher, Representative . Perdue spent about $3 million of his own money in the primary battle. His outsider status, and the statewide name recognition afforded by his cousin helped counter the fact that the Chamber of Commerce endorsed Kingston, rather than businessman Perdue. Perdue won by 5 percentage points. During the primary campaign Perdue said he wouldn't support Mitch McConnell as Senate Republican leader. After winning the nomination, Perdue and McConnell met privately. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Chambliss as saying Perdue was very clear in the meeting that ``he's going to be a team player.'' Published Sept. 24, 2014
