Theme: “SACRIFICE TO GOD WITH THANKSGIVING, PAY YOUR VOW” - Jonah 2:9

Cantor: Revd. Olusegun Lufadeju Responses: John Reading in A

1. Processional Hymn: A&MRW 282 - Come, Ye Thankful People, Come (St. George’s Windor)

1. Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest-home: all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God, our maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied: come to God’s own temple, come; raise the song of harvest-home.

2. All this world is God’s own field, fruit unto his praise to yield; wheat and tares therein are sown, unto joy or sorrow grown; ripening with a wondrous power till the final harvest-hour: grant, O Lord of life, that we holy grain and pure may be.

3. For we know that thou wilt come, and wilt take thy people home; from thy field wilt purge away all that doth offend, that day; and thine angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast, but the fruitful ears to store in thy garner evermore.

4. Come then, Lord of mercy, come, bid us sing thy harvest-home: let thy saints be gathered in, free from sorrow, free from sin: all upon the golden floor praising thee for evermore: come, with all thine angels come, bid us sing thy harvest-home.

Bible Study Outline THEME: COVENANT WITH THE LIVING GOD SUB-THEME: Family and Covenant with the living God (9) TOPIC: The Bane of godly family—Hatred TEXT: Gen. 4:3-8 AIMS: i. to define hatred in the context of godly family, ii. to help us understand the destructive power of hatred in a godly family and iii. to suggest some ways to curb hatred in society

INTRODUCTION: Hatred is a feeling of strong antagonism and dislike. It is the sin that led to many atrocities committed in the world, past and present. Cain, the first child in the first family displayed potent hatred that finally led him to murder his brother Abel. Seeing the potential of hatred in this text, what are the factors responsible for this and how can we as Christians overcome this powerful destroyer of mankind?

STUDY GUIDES:

1. What is hatred and what are its causes in today’s world? (Gen 4:3-8)- Reference: Est 3:5; Dan 3:19; Mark 6:18-19.

2. Carefully explain the destructive power of hatred in the following Bible passages: Est 3:5-6; Dan 3:19; Acts 23:12

3. What virtues can help us overcome hatred in the society? 1Samuel 26:8-9; Pr 17:9; 1Pe 4:8.

4. What are the Biblical injunctions for overcoming hatred? Lev 19:17; 1 John 2:9-11; 3:15;

CONCLUSION: No matter what happens in our families (nuclear or extended), we are to love unconditionally and not hate one another. The practice of humility and forgiveness should be genuine in Christian families in order to produce a society devoid of hatred.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Love builds family and society; hatred destroys them.

MEMORY VERSE: 1John 3:15 “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him”.

SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Luke 6: 38

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Jehovah Jireh, You are the Mighty Provider, thank You for Your provision for me. At the beginning of another harvest season, I receive grace to give without grumbling. As I give let Your good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over be measured back to me. Banish poverty from my territory. Launch me into Your abundance and load my life with bumper harvest of good things and surround me with Your heavenly beauty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE j Jesus and Satan are arguing as to who is the better programmer. They decide to have a contest with God as the judge. They start and type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen but, seconds before the end of the contest, a bolt of lighting strikes the power cable. When the power is restored God announces the contest is over. He asks Satan to show what he’s come up with. Satan says, I’ve got nothing. I lost it all when the power went out.’ God then goes to Jesus’ computer. Jesus enters a command, and the screen comes to life in a vivid display, an angelic chorus pouring from the speakers. Satan is astonished, ‘How did he manage that?’ God replies, ‘You might have lost everything, but Jesus saves.’

Jonah 2:9 “But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’” - Jonah 2:9

All glory to God for yet another Harvest Season on earth. This is a privilege that must not be taken for granted. If the Lord has not been for us, we would have been consumed but for His grace and mercy we are alive to celebrate again. May His name forever be praised in our lives and among us in the Cathedral. May I congratulate the Host Society of this year’s Harvest – the Cathedral Youth Fellowship for this brilliant take off. The Lord will repeat His wonders through you and in you in Jesus’ name.

As we all know Harvest Season is a time of deep reflection on God’s wonderful benevolence towards His creation as evidenced by His unique protection, preservation, and provision, that is targeted at taking appropriate actions to reciprocate His lovingkindness. God is ever faithful in meeting the needs of His people. The Psalmist says: “I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen the righteous abandoned or their children begging for bread.” (Psalm 37:25). For this reason, we cannot but sacrifice to God with thanksgiving and make good our vows to the Lord Most High in this year’s harvest.

In Jonah chapter 2, the Prophet reflected on the seriousness of his situation before and after being swallowed by the whale - in both situations, he was close to death. And yet he felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for God’s provision. Jonah cried out to God, and God answered. Jonah recognised the desperate fate from which he had been rescued. Thrown into the sea with no hope of saving himself, Jonah had been pulled from the brink of certain death by a means both strange and wonderful. He had been saved - and saved in a way only God could accomplish. This applies to us as individuals. We owe God debts of gratitude for His grace which has sustained us in the vicissitudes of daily life particularly in this country which has become infested with crime, wickedness, and incalculable inhumanity. Amid these precarious circumstances, God stepped in for us. He brought about salvation when it seemed like salvation was impossible.

Like Jonah we have an overwhelming sense of gratitude to God, and we are determined to SACRIFICE TO GOD WITH THANKSGIVING AND PAY OUR VOWS. Sacrifice is an act of offering unto God that which cost us something. Sacrifice is not a casual affairs, a sacrifice of thanksgiving means much more than a quick “thank you, God I appreciate it”. A sacrifice of thanksgiving must cost us something because it is the expression of gratitude to God for what He has done, doing and will do.

Throughout the scriptures, giving thanks is described as a sacrifice. When the Old Testament Jews take sacrifices to the temple, it was a sacrifice of something important to them. The sacrifice was willingly presented to the Lord with a heart of joy and gratitude. On the other hand, is Vow, which is a solemn promise made to God to worship Him with a certain offering in the future, motivated by gratitude for God’s grace in the life of the offerer. Perhaps, during our low times we have made promises to God to give Him of our substance in appreciation of His anticipated intervention in our matters. This season will afford us the opportunity to redeem our vows.

I need to say that God relishes our thank offerings and desires that we pay our vows to Him. He does not joke with them and will not overlook them. He says: “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfil your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honour me.” (Psalm 50:12,14&15)

Genesis 4:1-8 talks about two brothers – Cain, a tiller of the ground (Farmer) and Abel, a keeper of the sheep. The bible says in verse 3 that in the process of time both came to offer their sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the Lord, Cain brought of the fruit of the ground because he was a farmer while Abel also brought of the firstlings, of his flocks and of the fat thereof and the Lord accepted the sacrifice of Abel but rejected the one of Cain. Cain became terribly angry, and God said to him why are you angry if you have done well your sacrifice would have been accepted but because you have not done well your sacrifice is rejected.

God who is the ultimate source of all beneficence and blessing in our lives deserves our gratitude. Let us sacrifice our thanks, praises, and substances to Him. Let nothing stop your thanksgiving this Harvest season, prepare your mind towards it do not give grudgingly or by necessity, whatever you are giving let it proceed from your heart, never you beat your chest to take glory for what God has given you, for it is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth but of God that showeth mercy, for by strength shall no man prevail.

As you serve and thank God with your substance during this year’s Harvest events may your sacrifice be acceptable onto God like that of Abel and open doors of Blessings to you in Jesus Name.

Have a Blessed Week!
