................................................................................. 96 *These clubs are yet to approve their standards BACKGROUND In 1908, the Blue was adopted as the highest recognition for sporting achievement by students of the University of Adelaide. The history of the Blue began in 1836 following a boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, first as a blue ribbon tied to the bow of the Cambridge boat and later as the colour of the stripes worn by the Oxford crew. Over time, any student who represented Oxford against Cambridge was entitled to wear a dark blue jacket. Eventually, Blues were awarded for outstanding achievement in University sport – a tradition adopted at Universities in many parts of the world. Over 4,000 recipients have been awarded a University of Adelaide Blue, Half Blue or Club Letters. Formerly a jacket, today the Blues Award is presented as a certificate and a suitably engraved pin. Previous award winner are listed on the Adelaide University Sport and Fitness (AUSF) website: adelaideunisport.com.au/ausportawards. AWARDS At the University of Adelaide, four levels are awarded in accordance with criteria determined by each University sporting club and approved by the AUSF Blues Committee: A Blue: Is awarded to students, who are full members of an AUSF club and who have participated at a state or national level with distinction. A Half Blue: Is awarded to students, who are full members of an AUSF club, for achievement at a high level. A Half Blue is also presented to Life Members of AUSF. Club Letters (for service and for competition): Is awarded for significant service to a University sporting club (Service) and/or sporting achievement (Competition). Those who are not Adelaide University students, but are AUSF club members, are able to be nominated for these two awards. Additionally, since 2011, a Service to University Sport award, which recognises people who have given an outstanding and highly commendable contribution to AUSF, or to Sport at the University of Adelaide over a significant period of time, has been presented. The Service Award is regarded as a higher award than Club Letters in the case of club-based service. Honorary Life Membership of Adelaide University Sport, however, shall continue to be conferred upon any person who, in the opinion of the AUSF Council following consideration of a recommendation from the AUSF Board, has rendered long and single service to the AUSF. It is regarded as a higher award than a Service Award. P a g e | 1 Other sports awards are presented by AUSF including Patron’s Cup, Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Intervarsity Certificate of Merit. Nominations for these awards are assessed by the AUSF Board and nomination process is outlined on the AUSF website. BLUES AWARDS DINNER Held at the end the year, the Blues Awards dinner is widely acknowledged as the social event of the University sporting calendar, where award recipients, their family and friends, sports officials and University & sport alumni attend in numbers to celebrate the achievements of our sports athletes and administrators. P a g e | 2 THE BLUES COMMITTEE Although each affiliated club is responsible for setting its own standards, which must be achieved before a nomination for a an award can be submitted to the Blues Committee for ratification, it is the role of the Blues Committee to determine if the nominee meets the standard set by the club and to approve the standards set by all clubs in accordance with general guidelines. The Blues Committee shall consist of up to 10 Blues of the Association or other qualified persons, who shall be appointed by the AUSF Council, together with the General Manager, who shall be an ex-officio, non-voting member. A quorum for a Blues Committee meeting shall be five. It meets at least twice a year. A major review of all club standards was conducted to bring into line (where possible) the standards that must be met to achieve a Blue and Half Blue,
