Dr ROD McGEE, ESM FIEAust CPEng 13 December 1954 to 1 February 2002 Rod McGee was born on 13 December 1954 and spent his early life in the Lenah Valley area, with early schooling at Haig Street Kindergarten and Lenah Valley Primary School. He was successful in scholarship examinations for the Friends' School, perhaps to the early chagrin but certainly to the financial detriment of his parents, and started high school there in 1967. Rod completed his secondary schooling at Friends', winning some additional scholarships to aid with payment of fees as well as some academic awards including the Palman Qui honour board for Dux of School in his final year. Photography was an important interest at school with Rod taking many pictures for the school newspaper 'Focus' and magazine 'Echoes'. His final year academic results enabled him to choose between a Commonwealth tertiary scholarship and a Department of Public Works cadetship. They also saw him awarded the Richard Dry University Exhibition for Statewide mathematics results. Rod accepted the Public Works Department cadetship, and thus commenced his career in civil engineering. He graduated from the University of Tasmania in March 1977 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honours degree and commenced work in the Department's Launceston offices on road and bridge construction projects. Over the next two to three years, he worked in most of the engineering related sections of the Department, gaining valuable experience to complement his university studies and vacation employment that would assist him with his career of about 25 years in public roles associated with the State's roads and bridges.

TASMANIANHERITAGE Festival 2016 DISCOVERy DISCOVERIES RE 1st - 31st May Minister’s Message It gives me great pleasure to provide an introduction to the 2016 program for the Tasmanian Heritage Festival. The Tasmanian Heritage Festival is a great way in which all Tasmanians and visitors to our island State can connect with our history, our heritage and our stories. Our island home is increasingly recognised as a destination of choice, and the rich combination of our Aboriginal, historic and natural features adds to our appeal. The Heritage Festival is a brilliant way in which we can take the time to explore our heritage places and precincts, and learn more about the stories that make Tasmania so unique. It is also a great way in which we can show our appreciation and pride in the work of countless volunteers to recognise, protect and present our heritage places, precincts, stories and features. I commend the program to you. I encourage you to look through the schedule of events, see what appeals, and tell your friends, family and colleagues about specific events on offer that might appeal to them too. The National Trust and all of the volunteers, organisations, businesses and government entities involved are to be congratulated for pulling together such an interesting and compelling series of events right across the State. I hope that you enjoy what the Tasmanian Heritage Festival 2016 has to offer: a Festival that is proudly supported by the Tasmanian Government and delivered by the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) for all of us to enjoy. Matthew Groom MP Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage Painting by Alan Young, exhibitor, The Sound of Art with a few Bachs, p6 1 National Trust Messages Chair of the Board The 2016 Tasmanian Heritage Festival promises to be a great opportunity to appreciate - and celebrate - this State’s wonderful heritage.

97 CHANGES AND CONTINUATIONS : THE POST-PENAL SETTLEMENT OF TASMAN PENINSULA, 1877-1914 by Peter MacFie Port Arthur Conservation Project The history of Tasman Peninsula during the initial post-penal period from 1877-1914 is presented and discussed. Settlement of the peninsula after the closure of Port Arthur prison resulted in two distinct communities - one providing recreation facilities and services to tourists and the other dependent on farming, orcharding, logging and fishing. During this period Tasmanians began to come to terms with the convict history represented by Port Arthur, with Eaglehawk Neck and Port Arthur becoming foci for the developing tourism industry. Key Words: Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania, Port Arthur, post-penal settlement, free settlers. From SMITH, S.J. (Ed.), 1989: IS HISTORY ENOUGH?
