‘PYLYPIVKA’ (ADVENT) PASTORAL MESSAGE BY METROPOLITAN .

My , Reverend Clergy, Reverend Sisters, Seminarians, and Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Praise Be Jesus Christ!

You and I are experiencing a remarkable array of changes in communications technology. There are new computer operating systems. We’ve dramatically enhanced our ability to communicate with one another throughout the world.

These are good and helpful advancements. However, I wonder what effect it may have on our relationship with our Creator, with God Himself. Is God becoming more distant to us as we increasingly pre-occupy our leisure and work time with the tools of modern communication? How can you and I preserve some special precious quiet time to hear God’s whisper to us?

“Pylypivka” or Philip’s Fast begins on November 14th. It is a time of preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Christmas). I invite you to reflect on your ‘busyness; in communication with others. Can you re-direct some time and energy to quiet time with Jesus? Create the daily opportunities to hear God’s message to you, His whispers to what He desires of you.

A good period of fasting involves some self-denial of oneself to greater holiness. Search and develop communication modes with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and with His Blessed Mother. Covet still and quiet times with the Lord. Thank God and give praise to Him in individual and community prayer at your . Speak with Jesus as you would with your best friend, sharing joys and difficulties. Lift the needs of others in your holy prayer. Seek forgiveness and healing through the Holy Sacraments. Give the presence of Jesus Christ through regular participation in the Divine Liturgy and in the reception of the Holy Eucharist.

Rejoice in your Ukrainian Catholic faith. Rejoice in your close relationship with Jesus Christ as you grow and develop in you means of communicating with Him. Rejoice in His presence midst us as we prepare during “Pylypivka” for the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (Christmas).

On October 8th-9th, 2010, the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts held a conference commemorating the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO) in Rome, Italy.

Over 400 attendees participated from all corners of the world. The conference was divided into three main areas: the story of the writing of the Code, the particular legislation of each Particular Church and the prospect for Ecumenism.

Of particular concern for the Ukrainian Church was the presentation by Rev. Teodor Taras Martynyuk and the progress made by the Ukrainian Church in enacting its own particular law. In comparison to the other Churches, much has been done to ensure the life of our Church. November 14, 2010 12 CANTORS WORKSHOP: Lansdale

Submitted by Rev. Archpriest Daniel Troyan

Professor Joseph Roll, and 15 participants, joined together the weekend of November 5-7, 2010 to study the Requiem Services for our Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Professor Roll began the introduction by saying:” Do we need a whole weekend to learn to sing “Panachyda??” The truth of the weekend spoke volumes more of the richness and beauty of our Services for the Deceased in our Ukrainian Catholic tradition. In recent history the Divine Liturgy alone has sometimes replaced the proper services for the deceased: the Parastas (front row: left to right): Margaret Klos, Edward Patch Sr, Bernadette or Great Panachyda , Nush, Lesia Leskiw, Nancy Claflin,Jerome Mykietyn, Lesia Penkalskyj, Theresa The Hymns of St. Filipi, (back row: left to right): Bohdana Yaroshevych, Eugenia Korlatowych, John Damascene, the Peter Nush, Archpriest Daniel Troyan, Professor Joseph Roll, Lisa Oprysk, 40th Day Peter Letenauchyn, Arni Filipi, (missing from photo): Ihor Mirchuk. Commemoration.

Professor Roll started the workshop, as he does all his Liturgical Music workshops, with a history of the service being studied: it’s origins, the structure of the service, it’s relation to the gospel & the community; it’s musical roots and it’s proper place in our Liturgical life. Many times for the sake of brevity, services are shortened, and the power and beauty of our church traditions are diminished. The message of the service becomes obscured by not being allowed to fulfill it’s proper intent: it’s like removing parts of symphony or a gospel passage and expecting to obtain the same inspiration and benefit. Sadly we often hear that people feel that the deceased are not properly honored when the Divine Liturgy is not celebrated at a funeral; for example, during the time of the Great Fast, when daily Divine Liturgies are not celebrated. However we truly don’t honor their memory or the memory of our ancestors, when we allow our Ukrainian Catholic traditions to disappear.

The Requiem services at a funeral, when properly celebrated, address our human grieving & loss, they speak of our relationship with God, they speak of our hope and our joy in the midst of our sorrow and comfort us by allowing us time to mourn but always holding our faith up for us see as our journey from God to God.

November 14, 2010 13 CANTORS WORKSHOP: Lansdale (continued from previous page)

The workshop participants were able to study the eight Samohlasny Tones, the Three Stasis (Stations), The Canon, the Hymns of John Damascene & the Hymns of Final Farewell, as well as alternate music for Requiem Divine Liturgies taken with Parastas.

The weekend workshop becomes a retreat experience, with the spiritual needs of the attendees and the instructors supported through mutual conversation, prayer and personal interaction. On Sunday, the Divine Liturgy and a formal Parastas was celebrated in Ukrainian and English, at the parish church of the Presentation of our Lord, who hosted the weekend in their church facility.

We thank Professor Roll who continues to present our Liturgical music with such depth, enthusiasm and professionalism. May God grant him many more healthy happy years in His service!

November 14, 2010 14 METROPOLITAN STEFAN’S REFLECTION ON THE COMBINED CLERGY RETREAT

“Simply ministers through whom you became believers, each of them doing only what the Lord assigned him.” (1 Corinthians 3:5)

One hundred and sixty clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the United States of America gathered in September, 2010 for a retreat. Bishops, priests and deacons of all four eparchies meditated on the inspired messages offered by the Most Rev. Photo: Msgr. Roman Golemba , bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic of Argentina. We prayed together. We socialized together. God’s ministers gathered together so that we might come to recognize the gifts given to us by the Holy spirit. We were called together to , as St. Paul States, to interpret things in spiritual terms. (1 Cor. 3:13)

An annual retreat is gladly anticipated and needed by all bishops and clergy. Its Most Rev. importance is emphasized by an expectation in canon law of all clergy to participate. Sviatoslav This clergy retreat was of particular importance because it gathered clergy and their Shevchuk bishops from the entire Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USA. It allowed for the building of a necessary bond of fraternity and the enhancement of our identity as a Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USA. I offer my heartfelt gratitude to all of the clergy who participated, not allowing for greater personal sacrifices to hinder your attendance. Special gratitude is offered to by brother bishops for your understanding and support for the need of our coming together more often as one mystical body.

Such a combined clergy retreat necessarily involves substantial extra costs, particularly for a facility to accommodate the greater number of clergy. We are indebted to the following for their generous response to our appeal to assist:

Providence Association of Ukrainian Catholics in America ($10,500) Ukrainian Self-Reliance Federal Credit Union of Philadelphia ($6,000) The Heritage Foundation of 1st Security Federal Savings Bank, Inc. Some gifts were sent directly to parishes, also. Know that our special prayers of gratitude were offered for all of our special benefactors. You have generously assisted our clergy to better prepare themselves to do what the Lord assigns them to do. God bless our richly special benefactors in ways only He can!

Please offer your words of support and encouragement to the clergy serving you, as they attempt to minister to your spiritual needs and for your . Each has particular and unique gifts to share. Pray with them and for them.

We especially offer prayers of gratitude for the giftedness and spiritual wisdom shared with our clergy by our retreat master, Bishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk. He is a gift to our Church, energetically fulfilling that which the Lord assigns him. We are grateful for his readiness to provide the retreat and for his personal sacrifices to provide it. God bless him richly in ways only He can!

The bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic eparchies in the USA are committed to the continued building up of our fraternal bonds as clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USA. It is hoped that a clergy conference on relevant themes will be the next gathering of clergy of all four eparchies in three to five years time. Please pray for success in these endeavors.

The Providence Association of America generously donated $10,500 towards the successful combined clergy spiritual retreat for the Ukrainian Catholic clergy of all four eparchies in the USA, held in September, 2010. (Photo: Teresa Siwak)

November 14, 2010 18 METROPOLITAN STEFAN SOROKA’S THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

Thanksgiving is a very special celebration which places great importance on our relationship with God and with our loved ones. It is an opportunity which naturally invites us to focus on the quality of these relationships. At the heart of these relationships is our coming to appreciate the giftedness of our journey with God and with our loved ones. Should we not challenge ourselves to give greater priority to express our heartfelt thanksgiving to God and to loved ones?

How will you and I celebrate this Thanksgiving? For a start, a visit with Jesus Christ in His holy Church would center the meaning of our life and all its daily activities in the author of all creation. Choose to gather with your parish family at your parish for the Thanksgiving Divine Liturgy and thank God for the many gifts bestowed upon you, known and unknown to you. Consider being more generous in sharing your gifts and resources for the benefit of the parish and its programs.

You will gather with family and friends for a Thanksgiving feast. Is there someone you could personally include in your invitation list, or to accompany you to a family gathering? Is there someone with whom you could extend the joy of the holiday? The saintly Mother Teresa of Calcutta often said that we in the western world suffer from much greater poverty than people in the poorest countries – poverty of loneliness.

Challenge yourself to really express gratitude with your loved ones. Get past your natural inclination to avoid expressing the ‘mushy’ sentiments with those closest to you. Don’t assume they should or already know of your feelings for them. A spirit of thanksgiving is not present when it is not expressed. Celebrate it boldly with your heartfelt ‘I love you’! Tell your loved ones that they are special to you, and show how they are important to you! Generously forgive where necessary, and choose to live a grateful and joyful life.

Now that you and I have resolved to go broke with our personalities in celebrating gratitude, know that God loves you and rejoices at your choice to be fully grateful. GOD BLESS YOU and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
