John Ball’s 1965 novel, In the Heat of the Night, takes place in Alabama as the whole country grappled with integration and an evolving acceptance of the Civil Rights movement. This was the era of sit-ins and tear gas, of marches and assassinations. This was the era of Martin Luther King Jr., the Kennedys, and LBJ and an America finally, deliberately, moving toward a future of equality regardless of skin color. Nearly 50 years later, have we arrived? Perhaps not. Just as Ball’s white, southern police Chief Bill Gillespie’s personal prejudices are tested by working with African-American detective Virgil Tibbs, America continues to confront prejudice, stereotyping and fear. Playwright and screenwriter Matt Pelfrey sets his riveting stage adaptation of this classic American thriller in the environment of gradual change, rebellion, anger, frustration, and stubborn clinging to old ways of life. -

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact: Lucy Pollak [email protected] (818) 887-1499 (for media only) On the radio and streaming free this weekend in support of Black Lives Matter: L.A. Theatre Works’ ‘In the Heat of the Night’ LOS ANGELES (June 10, 2020) — Beginning this Saturday, June 13, the L.A. Theatre Works audio theater recording of John Ball’s In the Heat of the Night, adapted for the stage by Matt Pelfrey, will air on radio stations across the country and be available to stream free on the L.A. Theatre Works website at latw.org/broadcasts. Ball’s novel was published in 1965, a time when America was grappling with integration and an evolving acceptance of the Civil Rights movement. The sizzling, Edgar Award-winning noir thriller inspired both an Academy Award-winning film starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger and a long- running (1988-1994) television series starring Howard Rollins and Carroll O’Connor. In 1962, a white man has been murdered on a hot August night in a small town in the deep South, and the local police arrest a black stranger named Virgil Tibbs. The police soon discover that their prime suspect is in fact an expert homicide detective from Pasadena. The staunchly racist members of this rural Southern community must come to terms with the fact that Tibbs may be their only hope to help solve the brutal murder that, until now, has turned up no witnesses, no motives and no clues. The L.A. Theatre Works production, which stars Ryan Vincent Anderson, Michael Hammond, Kalen Harriman, James Morrison, Travis Johns, Darren Richardson and Tom Virtue and was directed by Brian Kite, was recorded during a series of live performances at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater before the cast headed out on a national tour. -
The Past Lives of Betty Eisner: Examining the Spiritual Psyche Of
THE PAST LIVES OF BETTY EISNER: EXAMINING THE SPIRITUAL PSYCHE OF EARLY PSYCHEDELIC THERAPY THROUGH THE STORY OF AN OUTSIDER, A PIONEER, AND A VILLAIN TAL DAVIDSON A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2017 © Tal Davidson, 2017 ii Abstract In this thesis, I argue that early LSD research was imbued with a sense of mysticism that was constructed to be commensurable with concurrent scientific epistemology. I demonstrate how mysticism entered psychedelic research and therapy through the history of a pioneer LSD psychotherapist named Betty Eisner. Since the late 1940s, Eisner was a key member of a bible study group that emphasized the psychological foundation of mystical experiences. When she entered psychology in the 1950s, she imported this influence into her research and therapy. As an active member of the small international LSD research community of the ‘50s and ‘60s, she participated in ongoing discussions about the place of mysticism in LSD psychotherapy. However, following malpractice accusations in the 1970s, Eisner lost her clinical license. Using records from her license revocation hearings, I will contextualize her work within the larger psychology profession’s attitudes toward mystically inspired therapy. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract………………………………………………………………………………….ii Table of Contents……………………………………………………………………….iii Introduction………………………………………………………………………………1 Chapter -
