Summer Learning Challenge 2020

It’s really important that we all become lifelong learners – not stopping just because there’s a break!

In the media, you will have read and seen comments to say that children are ‘falling behind’, have ‘missed so much content’, or have ‘lost the learning habit’. You should not worry about this – this is a new situation for all of us and we will make sure you have plenty of opportunities to consolidate your learning. #FocusOnYourFuture

Did you know that over 70,000 species of animals, plants, fungi and single celled organisms can be found in the UK? Our challenge for you over the summer is to see how many different species you can spot and record your observations. Tier 1: Wildlife diary Create a list of all of the different species of animals and plants that you see. Add to it each time you see a new species by recording the name, date and place you saw it. Tier 2: Wildlife survey As well as the tier 1 wildlife diary you would keep a tally of each time you encounter the same species again. Try to identify if any populations change throughout July and August. Tier 3: Wildlife guide Present your observations in more detail. For each species you see, or a selection of your favourites, you could describe the appearance of the species, produce a scientific drawing or take a photograph. Details that you could research and include: habitat, diet, lifespan, survival adaptations, migration patterns. Be ready to share with your science teacher.
