IMPACT arrives “On Course” for First Semester

Wow! Where did the semester go! Impact has had a busy, but interesting semester. Many of you were involved to make it a meaningful semes- ter. Looking back, we provided some interesting opportunities and events to attend. We provide academic opportunities by capable people: Loretta to teach and help students with math and Dianne to teach and help students with writing; but most importantly, these ladies are just good people with whom to visit and obtain needed information. Roxanna is always available to not only help us Impact advisors by listening and offering creative ideas, but also a great resource person who can answer many student questions. She can fill in at a moments notice, if necessary. Jason, our boss and director of Impact, is always ready to listen and offer suggestions to us, the employees, but also to the many stu- dents with whom he visits with during the semester. He provides us the encouragement to plan activities and events that will give you an ad- vantage if you take choose. As coordinator of Impact, it is my privilege to set up transfer visits and cultural events. We were able to plan four transfer visits to , Pittsburgh State University, Emporia State University and Southwestern College in Winfield. We experienced some wonderful activities this fall. In September, we enjoyed our first outing compliments of the Flickingers. Dianne, Mark and family invited us to their unique country home. So much love has gone into building their home with designs made and work done by the fam- ily. To complete the night, Colgan James provided a tour of Whispering Oaks via a large hayrack ride, Todd Shepherd then stimulated our curi- osity as he invited us to view the heavens with his powerful telescope and laser pointing device. Of course, the outdoor barbecue was tasty! Octo- ber was a very busy month for Impact. We had the privilege of touring two museums in the Riverside area of . The Mid- American Indian Center provided much history of the Native American people in which was highlighted by Monument at the confluence of the big and little Arkansas Rivers that flow through Wichita. Lunch was enjoyed at a Lebanese Restaurant followed by touring The Race: Are We So Different? Exhibit at Exploration Place. November was busy setting up Career Previews. The com- ments received from those of you who attended those visits echoed the reason we advocate doing this type of activity. Some of you decided you were on the right track as this is what you want to do, others of you were a little taken aback, finding out the actual job or workplace was not as you had imagined and maybe it is not a good choice for you. Either way, this gave many of you pause for consideration. Some of you are asking for more visits within the same career to see if your first exposure was correct. We continued the month of Nov. with a Walking Tour of Arkansas City. Mrs. Anita Judd Jenkins, provided us with a very interesting historical account of the happenings in this small Kansas town. Even some natives of Arkansas City had no idea of what this town use to be. In its heyday, it boasted several factories, and provided a gathering place for the preparation of the Cherokee Strip Run Land Grab in Oklahoma. Arkansas City had elegant opera houses, grand hotels, a street car, and a tunnel underneath businesses to connect them and keep people out of the sloppy weather. Ever wonder why the city doesn’t sandblast some of the old buildings to make them more attractive? If they are on the historical register, it is against the rules to do so. It destroys the authenticity of the history of the building. As you can see, there are many events and activities provided to you. There will be more transfer visits and cultural events in the spring. We will inform you in the January Newsletter what those activities will be. Have a meaningful Christmas and Happy New Year!
