TCDSB celebrates excellence in Catholic education

To launch Catholic Education Week, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is once again celebrating the outstanding achievements of staff, students and members of the Catholic community at its annual special awards event on Monday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m. at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Avenue East in North York.

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR THE FOLLOWING AWARDS:

Student Achievement Award: presented to students who have achieved honours in a variety of disciplines. The Student Achievement Award is given to those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement either academically, physically, spiritually or socially at the provincial, national or international level.

Sr. Mary Hamilton Award for Exceptional Students: this award recognizes personal achievement or contribution to the lives of others.

Ashif Jaffer Award for Excellence in Special Education: this award recognizes a TCDSB teacher, education assistant, peer tutor/helper or volunteer who has demonstrated excellence in the support of Special Education.

Student Trustee Award of Excellence in Academics, Leadership and Christian Values: an annual award of $2,000 to an eligible student graduating from a Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary school who has demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership and Christian values, to encourage and support him or her in pursuit of studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Please be advised that the 2008 T4 slips will be delivered by February 20, 2009 to your school/department location. For supply/temporary staff, they will be mailed to your home address. However, if you have not received your T4 slip by the deadline date of February 28, 2009, please contact the Payroll Department at 416-222-8282, ext. 2102.

If you have received your T4 slip, and have misplaced it, please allow 5 to 7 business days for a duplicate copy to be provided. In addition, the Payroll Department will be issuing authorized T2200 forms by February 27, 2009 to those employees who have received mileage reimbursement and/or car allowance in 2008.

Whipper Billy Watson Education Bursary This bursary was founded by employees of the former Canadian Airlines International.

Purpose This bursary has been established to assist students with physical disabilities in full-time study at an Ontario College of Applied Arts & Technology. Two bursaries are granted each year to one male and one female applicant who demonstrate potential for studies at the Community College level. Each successful applicant receives a $2,000 bursary.

Eligibility Requirements Applicants must: • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident • register for September classes and in the first year of an Ontario College of Applied Arts & Technology as a full-time student; • have a physical disability which severely restricts their physical activities; • have a demonstrated commitment to academic study; • have demonstrated leadership and community service; • have demonstrated participation in extra-curricular activities. To commemorate the dedication of Maurice Izzard, principal of the school at Bloorview MacMillan Centre for eighteen years, his family and friends have established an annual award.

General Information In 1985 the Government of Ontario created the Aird Scholarship in honour of the Honourable John Black Aird on his retirement as Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. The scholarship is intended to help students with physical disabilities to study full time at a recognized Ontario postsecondary institution. It is hoped that the award will encourage a special talent or lifelong interest. The scholarship is granted each year to two applicants who demonstrate outstanding scholastic achievement, motivation, and initiative. Each successful applicant receives $2,500.

Each year, Ontario welcomes more than half of all newcomers to Canada. Immigration is vital to Ontario’s growth and newcomers play a key role economically, socially, and culturally in making Ontario strong and prosperous. The Newcomer Champion Awards program is a newly created program designed to recognize Ontarians who have facilitated cultural understanding and diversity or helped newcomers to successfully settle and integrate. Who is eligible? Eligible activities may include, but are not limited to: • Programs implemented to help settle and connect newcomers in communities. • Outreach efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding. • Events celebrating cultural diversity in Ontario. INTERNAL POSTING FOR TEACHING POSITION Section 23 Teacher (ELEMENTARY)

ENTERPHASE CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES ST CLARE CATHOLIC SCHOOL LOCATION

The Enterphase- St Clare program is a Ministry approved care and treatment program for latency aged children with behavioural and emotional needs. Students come into Section 23 programs because their primary need is treatment to deal with their emotional and behavioural needs. Education is a secondary need for Section 23 students. The agency‘s role in this partnership is to provide the treatment and safety components of the program. The teacher’s role is to provide the educational component in the classroom setting and to work cooperatively with the Child and Youth Worker and the clinical staff of the agency which includes a psychiatrist, psychologists, therapists and program managers. Projected PTR is approximately 8:1. This Section 23 classroom is located in St Clare School in the Dufferin/ St Clair area.

Candidates are required to meet the following criteria: ™ Certificate of Registration and Qualification (formerly Ontario Teachers Certificate and Ontario Teachers Qualification Record Card) ™ Minimum of two (2) years of successful qualified teaching experience in regular education ™ Minimum of two (2) years of successful qualified teaching experience in special education or alternative programs as of January 1, 2009 ™ Qualifications in Special Education (minimum of Part 1) ™ Qualifications in Primary and Junior Divisions or Junior and Intermediate Divisions ™ Positive recommendation from current principal
