FROM OURCHAIRMAN This issue of Together contains one of the most moving stories I have heard since I joined Nemours. You will learn about Josie—a young girl whose heart was so severely damaged that she required a heart transplant at Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Although her transplant was one of seven performed by the Nemours Cardiac Center in 2011, Josie’s was unusual in that she had to wait an entire year before receiving this gift of life.

Her story is a perfect example of the kind of comprehensive, compassionate care children with highly complex conditions receive from Nemours. Josie and her family received superb care not only from the entire cardiac team, but from a host of other Hospital departments and services throughout her illness. This is Nemours: doing whatever it takes to restore and improve health.

I hope your heart will be touched by Josie’s story. She is one of many, many children coping with highly complex diseases that Nemours is uniquely equipped to treat. We cannot do it alone, though. Your generous gift makes it possible for us to do more for children, especially when the stakes are high.

Remember that, because of the generosity of our founder, Alfred I. duPont, 100 percent of your gift goes directly to help children.

Sincerely,

John S. Lord Chairman of the Board

The Softer Side of Construction

As the “big dig” at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children continues in preparation for its expansion into a new building, SKANSKA construction workers are taking time to reach out to young patients. As workers blasted through rock to make way for a new underground parking garage, children could push a plunger to “detonate” the explosives from the safety of the Hospital. The workers also visited the Child Life center and patient rooms to distribute special coloring pages featuring construction vehicles. Children had fun connecting to workers by walkie-talkie so that they could give “commands” to have the heavy equipment back up, go forward or travel in a circle. Gaby made all of the logistical arrangements at her school and publicized the tournament with flyers. She obtained a gift basket for a raffle from the local Starbucks, and got local restaurants to donate pizzas, pretzels and sandwiches. Kids Runway for Research COMMUNITY PARTNER Sandi Patterson, owner of a boutique in Newark, Delaware, was proud to put on fashion shows featuring cancer survivors.

She was particularly touched by seeing four teenagers who appeared in the shows. “I thought, ‘These kids should be going to proms, not to chemo,’” she recalls. Sandi reached out to someone she had met at one of the shows, Patricia Ajizadeh, then a hematology/oncology social worker at Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

“We talked for hours and hours. Then it became clear: we knew what we had to do,” says Sandi. Thus, Kids Runway for Research was born. “We wanted any money that we raised to go to pediatric cancer research,” says Patricia. “And the Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research is right here.”

Patricia helped to recruit children who had been treated for cancer. “I had seen these kids firsthand while they were at their lowest point physically and emotionally. I wanted them to feel good about themselves again.” Sandi went to work coaxing fellow boutique owners, especially those who owned children’s boutiques, to provide fashion-forward clothing for the kids to model.
