SPRING/SUMMER 2015 Winding Trails Newsletter ostering a ove for the utdoors • eveloping eadership and ife kills • reating a ense of ommunity DIRECTOR’S CHAIR

Dear Friends, I have to laugh. I am sitting at my desk writing this piece for the Spring/Summer newsletter and it is late February, the temperature is -2 degrees and there are several feet of snow on the ground. I have spent the last couple days talking with the staff about Dunning Lake, summer camps, and warm weather special events in the middle of one of the best winters in years and it doesn’t seem right. Notice I said one of the best winters in years. Your personal opinion of this winter season is totally dependent on your frame of mind. Many people are saying “I have had enough of this snow and I can’t wait for winter to end.” Not us! We love it, for several reasons. First, a snowy winter means cross country skiing at Winding Trails. Cross country skiing is the number one aerobic activity for winter sports. It works almost every muscle in your body and is very gentle on your joints. This winter we have had thousands of people join us for skiing. One group of regulars was the New Haven Outing Club that has come up every Wednesday. They are a group of 15-20 seniors ranging from 60 to 80 years old. I certainly hope I am as active as them when I get to that age. It was just awesome. The second reason I love a cold snowy winter is it provides more opportunities for families to spend time together in the outdoors. We have had a great season of ice skating and the Sportsplex Hill has held its snow for some outstanding sledding and sliding. This year will definitely go down as a great winter for Winding Trails. But this is New England, and one of the best parts of its charm is the change of seasons. Spring is coming! The Board of Directors and staff continue to work hard to make Winding Trails the best it can be. Last summer, we sent the membership a satisfaction survey and your response was overwhelmingly positive. There were definitely a few suggestions made that we will be implementing. In terms of major park improvements this year, you will find several items of note. First of all, we paved the gravel lot across from the Dunning Lake bathhouse. This will be a welcome addi- tion for those of you pushing strollers or around without shoes. We are also purchasing additional picnic tables and grills for the beach area. We have allocated a substantial amount of money for the “refurbishing” of many buildings. Much of this will involve “re-facing” the outside of buildings and cedar staining them. The Dunning Lake boathouse was completed this fall and the Dunning Lake bathhouse is scheduled to be done this spring along with some inside improve- ments. We have also purchased a tow behind chip spreader. This is being used to spread wood chips on many of our trails that are in rough shape from years of erosion and usage. The spring and summer seasons are definitely our busiest. To take full advantage of the value of your membership, I encour- age you to read this newsletter and fill your calendar with family fun Winding Trails’ events. The programs are conveniently separated into categories – Family, Youth, Adults, Aquatics, and Camps. Register early for the programs that interest you. We are finding more and more of our programs are gaining popularity and filling up early. Our guiding principles of fostering a love for the outdoors, creating a sense of community, and developing leadership and life skills are at the heart of all we do. I look forward to seeing many familiar faces as well as getting to know our new friends throughout the year. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me..

Sincerely,

OVERNIGHT CAMPING: MOVING TO PACK IN – PACK OUT Years ago, there were very few people using the campsites and our trails. The recent improvements to Walton Pond and the addition of Nature’s Porch has resulted in an influx of families using the campsites and walking the trails more frequently. As a result of the increase in pedestrian traffic, we have changed our car policy at the campsites for this year. Our campsites will be “pack in / pack out” only. NATURE’S OPEN HOUSE Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th 11:00 am – 4:00 pm Spend a beautiful fall day at Winding Trails. This event is for all ages and generations. Come and see over 90 custom built fairy and gnome dwellings set along a half-mile stroll through our wooded trails. It teaches respect for nature. It excites children to explore the natural world and it provides a quiet time to observe and discover. This all happens naturally. Tickets are available at Winding Trails starting in July for $5 per person in advance and $8 day of. Hope to see you there!
