Born William and Emma Leonard (Née Dowd)
Ann Leonard Annie was born in Morley in late 1891. She was the eldest daughter of Leeds- born William and Emma Leonard (née Dowd). The couple married in 1890 and, including Annie, they had 10 children. One child died in infancy but Annie’s other siblings included Edward (1894), Alice (1896), Walter (1897), Agnes (1900), Doris (1902), Ethel (1904), Elsie (1906) and Nellie (1908). All but Annie and Edward were baptised at St Mary’s RC Church, Batley. In the 1891 census William and Emma lived at Springfield Lane, Morley. William was a coal miner. In 1901 the couple had five children and were still living at Morley, but their address had changed to New Park Street. William was now a coal miner deputy. This was the official employed in a supervisory capacity at the pit with responsibility for setting props and general safety matters. By 1906 the family had moved to Batley and the 1911 census gives their address as North Bank Road, Cross Bank. This remained the family address when Annie died. At the time of this census William still worked as a coal miner deputy below ground. 19-year-old Annie, in common with many other local women, had employment in a woollen mill working as a cloth weaver. War changed all this. Within weeks of its outbreak Annie’s eldest brother Edward, a former Batley Grammar School pupil with a talent for art, enlisted with the Leeds Rifles. He went to France in April 1915. Around the time Edward went overseas the “shell scandal” debate raged at home, with the shortage of high explosives being cited as the reason for failure in battles and loss of soldiers’ lives. -

Leeds City Council Site Allocations Plan Examination Matter 7: Selection of sites allocated for development – East: Main Issue 1 Main Issue 2 Additional Site Specific Questions Doc No. M7/1c Leeds Local Plan Page 1 of 14 Main Issue 1: For each Housing Market Characteristic Area, are the individual sites selected sound? 1 Are the selected sites justified having regard to the site selection methodology and process, paying particular attention to the deliverability of the allocated sites? 1.1 Yes. The Council’s response to Matter 6 details the overall site assessment and selection process used for allocation of sites in the Plan. The Council considers that this approach is the most appropriate in terms of meeting CS aims and objectives for the MD as a whole and that the selection of sites is justified. This response to Matter 7 sets out how the overall methodology and process has applied in the East HMCA. It highlights the specific characteristics of and evidence relating to East and notes whether there are any specific issues arising. 1.2 Further to paragraph 3.3 of the Submission SAP CD1/1, East has the largest housing target set out within the Core Strategy, a target of 11,400 new dwellings equating to 17% of the overall housing requirement. East is an area of contrasting character areas reflective of its location sandwiched between the Inner area of Leeds and the outer rural areas of the Outer North East, Outer South East and Outer South, most of which is Green Belt. A significant amount of housing within East Leeds is post-war Council-built housing, focused around areas such as Whinmoor, Stanks and Swarcliffe. -

I-IV has occupied the leisure hours of Tthe past five years. Begun on a much more limited scale in response to a· passing remark by the Editor in Volume XXXI, p. 106, it has since been revised, at the request of the Society's Executive Committee, to make it as comprehensive as the limit ations of the compiler and the hard economics of publication allow. It is an entirely new index, the fruit of three successive journeys through the Proceedings; not an amalgam of the indexes to the sep arate volumes (though it has been carefully checked against many of these in the closing stages of the work). It has also been checked against L. T. Daw's "Skeleton" Index to Volumes I-XVI, which it therefore supersedes. A very large proportion of the references given in the volume indexes are too incidental to be of any value: the unconvinced reader is invited to confirm this the hard way. World War I Centenary: Remembrance is not Enough A Collection of liturgical resources for use in the Leeds Diocese around the Centenary of the end of World War I Published by the Justice & Peace Commission of the Leeds Diocese working with the Leeds Pax Christi Group September 2018 FOREWORD This year it is 100 years since the end of the First World War. There has been much focus on the lives of those soldiers, often very young men, who died during this conflict. Remembrance is essential to recognise the loss and sadness of those left behind and the tradition of remembrance has carried on throughout the hundred years even as we remember those killed in subsequent conflicts. In remembering the lives of soldiers who died in the First World War, we can easily forget the many others who suffered and for whom the war had a great impact. These include civilians, both British and German, those who died from accidents in munitions factories (such as the Barnbow factory in Leeds), the effects on the communities decimated by their loss of men and those who were Conscientious Objectors. The necessity of remembering has not always sat well with a commitment to working for peace. In his World Peace Day message for 2007, Pope Benedict said: In remembering wars and conflicts of the past we acknowledge our own responsibility and commitment to work for peace. This is the fiftieth Message for the World Day of Peace. In the first, Blessed Pope Paul VI addressed all peoples, not simply Catholics, with utter clarity. -

Appendix 7 Gipton and Stanks Fire Station Business Case At a Glance - the Key Points for this Proposal Proposal: The construction of a new fire station to replace Gipton and Stanks fire stations and removal of 24 fulltime posts from the establishment by way of planned retirements. Key Points: Gipton is classed as a very high risk area and Stanks as medium risk area. Stanks fire station is poorly located at the outer edge of the local community and access/egress from the site is problematic. In the 5 year period between 2004/5 and 2009/10 operational demand in these areas reduced by 28% (there has been a reduction of 61% of serious fires) . 2 WYFRS has piloted a new type of vehicle (Fire Response Unit) to deal with smaller fires and incidents to free up fire appliances to respond to more serious emergencies. The pilot has been successful and it is believed that a District based Fire Response Unit will handle in the region of 3,000 calls per year. The new fire station would have lower running costs. The two Killingbeck fire appliances would be supplemented by a Resilience Pump for use during spate conditions. Targeted community safety and risk reduction work would continue. 2 1. Foreword 1.1 This proposal forms one of a number of similar initiatives developed by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) as part of its plans for the future provision of a highly effective and professional Fire and Rescue Service. 1.2 Each proposal is based on sound and comprehensive research, using real data from past performance and predictions of future demand and risk. -

To bring to members’ attention an update of the work which the Communities Team is engaged in, based on priorities identified by the Community Committee. It also provides opportunities for further questioning, or to request a more detailed report on a particular issue. 2. This report provides regular updates on some of the key activities between Community Committee meetings and functions delegated to Community Committees, Community Champions roles, community engagement, partnership and locality working. Main issues Updates by theme: Children and Families: Champion - TBC 3. Outer East Community Committee have approved Youth Activity Applications that had been received. A large number had been received for 2019/20 to previous years. Environment & Community Safety: Champion TBC 4. A sub group meeting took place on the 9 April 2019. Grit Bins will be simplified, information will be distributed to all ward members in the next few weeks. LASBT At the last round of Community Committee meetings, a briefing was provided outlining the service review for the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team (LASBT). A number of questions were raised by committee members and responses to these can be found at Appendix 1. Cross Gates and Whinmoor and Temple Newsam wards Enforcement are looking into the process of doing duty of care visits to all businesses, this includes staff working late to capture take-away out lets. -

NEWSLETTER NO. 70 LATE SPRING 2007 EDITORIAL Welcome to another Newsletter and apologies for the slight delay to the production. I like to wait until we have held the AGM so that a brief report can be included for members unable to attend and this year, due to the Lecture Room bookings, we had to hold the AGM a couple of weeks later than before. At the AGM on 21 April, the previous Officers were re-elected en bloc so we carry on for another year – contact details are given at the end of the Newsletter. There were no surprises and a useful discussion was held concerning the management of the main society; members may recall that at last year’s AGM, the meeting expressed dissatisfaction with the governance arrangements for nominating members for the Council and Management Board. Nothing has changed, but it was pointed out that with only four paid staff and the need to rely on volunteers who are getting increasingly older it was difficult to run the Society as effectively as it once had been. The income from subscriptions was decreasing and it was vital to find someone to act as publicity officer. The meeting proposed that more work should be invested in developing the Society’s website as a key source of information about the Society, including the Section’s activities. On a more positive note, thanks were extended to Jane Ellis for arranging a successful lecture programme. Average attendances have remained constant at around 20 per lecture in spite of a fall in the overall Section membership and Jane has a full programme for 2007-2008 starting on 6 October.
