4 Scoop It Forward: A Sweet Success!

On Friday, April 20th over 100 people ranging from tiny tots to seniors entered a balloon-filled hall to begin our volunteer appreciation event with Phase 1: Create the Sundae of Your Choice. Some of our smallest members were the most delighted with take-home balloons, the chance to win a draw, and some serious decisions: Vanilla, chocolate or both? How do I get over a dozen toppings into my bowl without spilling them? Our hall was brimming with loud noises of excitement, except for 10 minutes of quiet while we proceeded to Phase 2: The Volunteer Salute – a video presentation of photos from our various events of 2011. More than one person remarked, “Gee, I keep forgetting how much we actually do!” An apt comment since in 2011 there were 277 different tasks performed at the League by some 70 volunteers. By half-past eight the kids had left and the event morphed into Phase 3: Pub Night. Some 55 people enjoyed drinks, games, and complimentary hot and cold hors d’oeuvres while visiting with friends and neighbours.

6 We are grateful for donations from Jim Brennan who crafted an exquisite belt as a prize in our volunteer draw, Bill MacDonald who gave us a book of photographs for that draw, and Safeway (Westmount) for a gift certificate. Thanks also to Praxair for a steal-of-a-deal discount on helium for the balloons, and to the continued support of Sherbrooke Liquor for Pub Night. This is a new way of celebrating volunteers while responding to the times. Our challenges: rising costs, the inclusion of families, a greener approach and stretching our resources so we can do more with less. Scoop It Forward fit the bill! And that’s not all. Our leftover cake, ice cream and coffee were sold at the Candidates Forum the following day. Remaining creamers and a bucket of ice cream have been set aside for the 45+ Potluck (April 27). Candy toppings will be re- packaged for sale, along with the rest of the juice boxes, at the Garage Sale Concession (May 5). David had a lot of help doing door prizes

8 The North Glen Pub Nite

The Volunteer Celebration worked well with some of the Ice Cream Social participants staying on into pub night. A steady stream of snacks kept appearing from the kitchen as the league provided snacks kept everyone munching.

The pub night started on time by closing the partition wall between the pub area and the rest of the hall. That was opened once all the underage children had left the premises.

A good evening of chat with some enjoying some of the games brought to the event. All enjoyed themselves and we even wrapped up on time. Though some with babysitters stayed a little longer as one must get good value from a night out and to be honest they wrangled the kids most of the evening with the ice cream social and so deserved the break. Pity the babysitters though...

Next month’s is Mead. So Bee there.. and we’ve decided on a name as all good pubs have a name. The salty dog, the Red Lion, Crown, and others could of been chosen but as we’re North Glenora and Glenora is of Scottish Origin and means golden valley we thought The North Glen would fit. Most of what we serve has a golden tinge and glens have a quiet restful image. So the pub nite is now the North Glen Pub Nite. Any artistic types want to do up a pub sign?
