NEATH PORT TALBOT COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL Children, Young People and Education Cabinet Board 26th January, 2017 Report of the Head of Transformation – Andrew Thomas Matter for Decision Wards Affected: Margam, Taibach, Port Talbot, Bryn & Cwmafan, Pelenna APPOINTMENT OF LA GOVERNOR REPRESENTATIVES FOR THE TEMPORARY GOVERNING BODY FOR THE PROPOSED NEW ALL THROUGH SCHOOL YSGOL NEWYDD MARGAM (REPLACING DYFFRYN SCHOOL AND GROES PRIMARY SCHOOL). Purpose of the Report 1. To appoint 5 LA Governor representatives to the temporary governing body of the new (3-16 age-range) 'all through' school Ysgol Newydd Margam (replacing Dyffryn School (Upper & Lower) and Groes Primary School). Background 2. Members will be aware that on 5th January, 2017, Cabinet agreed to establish a temporary governing body for Ysgol Newydd Margam, a new all through school (3-16 age range ) (replacing Dyffryn School (Upper & Lower) and Groes Primary School). 3. Members will also be aware that in addition to creating the temporary governing body Members were asked to consider the appointment of suitable LA Governor representatives to sit on the temporary governing body. As there were more nominations than positions available Members determined to defer a decision pending the receipt of further information. An extract from the minutes of that meeting is reproduced below for ease of reference: Decision 5 - "That the appointment of LA Governor representatives be deferred to enable a request to be made to the candidates of which there are more than vacancies, to provide written information/submissions not exceeding 500 words by the 16th January 2017 to enable the Cabinet Board at a future meeting to decide, as required by the Council’s policy of December 2012 who in the opinion of the Cabinet Board will make the most significant contribution to the management of the school." 4. -

FOREWORD Acorn was set up by a group of volunteers in August 2011 to promote positive mental health and improve the emotional health and wellbeing of individuals experiencing mental health issues in Neath Port Talbot. This directory has been produced because members of Acorn identified the need for information about services and support organisations to be easily available and in one place. It is estimated that one in four people will experience mental ill health at some point in their lifetime, so mental illness will, at one time or another impact on many of our lives, either directly or through family, friends or colleagues. It is important to be able to find the right help, support and guidance easily so we hope this directory will help to achieve this. We have tried to focus on local services, but where these don’t exist we have put together a section on national organisations, websites and help lines. Aberaman, Godreaman, Cwmaman and Abercwmboi
Community Profile – Aberaman, Godreaman, Cwmaman and Abercwmboi Aberaman is a village near Aberdare in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf. It was heavily dependent on the coal industry and the population, as a result, grew rapidly in the late nineteenth century. Most of the industry has now disappeared and a substantial proportion of the working population travel to work in Cardiff. Within the area of Aberaman lies three smaller villages Godreaman, Cwmaman and Abercwmboi. The border of Aberaman runs down the Cynon River. Cwmaman sandstone for climbing sports Cwmaman is a former coal mining village near Aberdare. The name is Welsh for Aman Valley and the River Aman flows through the village. It lies in the valley of several mountains. Within the village, there are two children's playgrounds and playing fields. At the top of the village there are several reservoirs accessible from several footpaths along the river. Cwmaman Working Men’s club was the first venue the band the Stereophonics played from, the band were all from the area. Cwmaman is the venue for an annual music festival which has been held Abercwmboi RFC a community every year since 2008 on the last weekend of September. venue for functions. Abercwmboi has retained its identity and not been developed as have many other Cynon Valley villages. As a result, is a very close and friendly community. Many families continue to remain within the community and have a great sense of belonging. Abercwmboi RFC offer a venue for community functions and have teams supporting junior rugby, senior rugby and women’s rugby. -

Cymmer & Croeserw
Community Profile – Cymmer & Croeserw Version 5 – will be updated and reviewed next on 29.05.20 The Villages of Cymmer, Croeserw, Abercregan, Dyffryn Rhondda and Cynonville make up the rural ward of Cymmer. They are situated in the east of the Afan Valley, the villages lying approximately 9 miles from the Towns of Port Talbot and Neath. The area is closer to Maesteg and people often travel there for shopping and services as it is easier to get to than Neath or Port Talbot. The villages are located very close to each other – about three quarters of a mile. The local landscape is wooded hills and some farmland. This breaks down as 0 – 17 20.8%, 18 - 64 59.5%, 65 and above 19.7%. 988 working age people are economically inactive, this figure, 47.8% been higher than both the NPT average, (29.4%) and Wales (23.0%). 9.7% of the population holds qualifications of Level 4 and above, with the NPT average been 20.8% and Wales as a whole 29.7%. 36.2% of housing is socially rented which is significantly higher than the welsh average of 16.5%. The majority of NPTCBC run facilities are now run and managed by the community. The local comprehensive school closed in July 2019 this has had a devastating impact on the whole valley. Natural Resources Wales manages the forestry in areas of the ward that houses lots of walking and cycling trails. -
