With all that has happened in the world Jewish Experience Center 6 recently, it was timely. Please know that while we will continue our open, loving culture at KI, we also take security very seriously. Our B'nai Mitzvah 7 Bi-Annual Israel Trip 8 Our emphasis is to use best practices to create an airtight security envelope Calendars 9-11 outside and around the building, so we all feel relaxed inside the building. Our Building Kehillah 12 review included studying our building’s exterior access, evaluating our security proto- cols and technology, consulting recognized experts in Jewish/synagogue security, and 65th Anniversary Yearbook 13 surveying best practices at other synagogues and similarly situated local facilities. KI Prom 14 Enrichment 15 We also made every effort to hear from our Members on this important issue. Our Senior Rabbi, Executive Director, and I met with several concerned Members Tikkun Olam 16 individually and in small groups. We publicized and conducted a very well attended Purim Extravaganza 17 “Town Hall” style open meeting on KI security with Members, Trustees, and Staff. As with all important issues, a variety of viewpoints were Do You Know? 21 expressed on how to approach this sensitive and important issue. I am pleased Tributes/Contributions 22-23 and proud to report that our professional staff, led by our Executive Director Matt Davidson, jumped into high gear immediately and put a number of new protocols and technology into place immediately upon learning of Members’ concerns. Special thanks to our wonderful school directors, Julie Dubron (ECC) and Rabbi Carrie Vogel (JEC) for working with parents to understand what we do, and how seriously we take their children’s safety. I also am grateful to our Board of Trustees, for making security a top priority issue, and taking a very thoughtful, balanced approach, leaving nothing off the table for discussion and consideration.

Changes and upgrades include, among other things, purchase of new access controls for the building, reconstruction of some perimeter fences and gates, hiring a new security consultant, new written protocols for staff and consultants, increasing the number of security guards, enhanced training and supervision of staff and consultants, implementation of new Member alert systems, enhanced screening of visitors, and implementation of regular evacuation drills for the children in our schools. We also applied for and were the first to obtain approval to use U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security grant money to help underwrite some of our upgrades. More is planned and underway, and we have another grant application pending with the 2 state of . Please know that we are safe, and we will continue to pray, learn, join together, and participate in our welcoming, inclusive Jewish Community of the Palisades, as we

BY RABBI NICK RENNER rabbi [email protected] The Challenge of Remembrance Hevre,

For eight days this past November, I was in Berlin with the Germany Close-Up program. In conjunction with the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel (where I was both a fellow and on the Alumni Advisory Board), the program takes North American Jewish leaders to Germany to engage with government representatives, as well as leaders from the German Jewish community. Germany Close-Up is funded by the German government as an oppor- tunity to connect with contemporary Germans, as well as the legacy of the Shoah.

One image that speaks to the complexity of the experience involves a memorial we saw at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, outside of Berlin. The main memorial there is a dominating concrete monolith, rising from the center of the camp. It is adorned in large red triangles to memorialize Communist persecution. It reflects the Soviet era, in which the site was administered by East German Communists. There is also content addressing in the Shoah in the form of a movie, along with exhibit descriptions inside the build- ings, but the central Communist monolith remains.

I found this memorial to be deeply unnerving. Something about this tower – set in the middle of the site – felt like an emotional and physical claim on the legacy of the Shoah. It made me question whether this mono- lith still belonged there. However, I also wondered if it wouldn’t just be another layer of revision to take it out and pretend that the memory of the place hadn’t been appropriated by the communists.

This competition of memorial was disturbing to me. That said, I recognize that what disturbs me is the ongoing challenge of uplifting the voices and honoring the memories of all who perished in the Shoah. This challenge of remembrance is one that we will continue to carry in our Jewish communities.

I have many other experiences to share, including perspectives from German Members of Parliament, Muslim refugees, and the Jewish Community. Please be in touch if you’d like to continue the conversation.

The JEC is constantly evolving – researching the newest trends in Jewish education and evaluating what is working and what isn’t. This year, we have made two big changes which bring more project-based learning opportunities to our program.

New 4th Grade Curriculum – During the summer, Rose and Brian wrote a new curriculum, which will give the students the opportunity to study both Hanukah and Passover in-depth. To facilitate this learning, we selected a thematically appropriate value for each semester. When studying Hanukah, students learned about the importance of caring for the elderly. With Passover, students will explore what it means to also have limited freedoms. At the close of the first part of the year, each of our on-site fourth grade classes planned and led a Hanukah party for residents in local nursing homes. In the Spring, students can also look forward to an Exodus from Eygpt simulation (spoiler alert, we’re walking to the ocean!)

Partnership with Theater Dybbuk – Aaron Henne is the founder and creative director of this incredible theater, and we are excited to have him working with the students and staff this year. In December, Aaron led a Hanukah program for our sixth grade Sunday students where they explored the theme of conflict in the Hanukah story and related it to stories of “conflict-then-triumph” in their own lives. The students then had a chance to tell their stories, in both “simple” and “legend” format. In January, Aaron led a session with the entire staff on how we can bring more creativity into our holiday programming. We are excited to roll out these ideas as we celebrate Tu B’ Shevat, Purim and Passover in the JEC. We are looking forward to bringing even more project-based experiences to the students in the upcoming year!

Dr. Gilbert & Patricia Martin

Pat and Gil Martin are long-time members of Kehillat Israel who have been blessed to see their grandchildren Bar Mitzvahed at KI—with Cantor Frenkel officiating. On November 15, 2015, the Martin family and over 200 guests were part of the official renaming of the Family Birth and Newborn Center to the Gilbert and Patricia Martin Family Birth and Newborn Center at the Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, California. The renaming honors Dr. Gilbert’s visionary leadership and tireless commitment to neonatology. This center serves as an area leader in the treatment of critically ill infants. It includes an obstetrical pavilion, and a Level IIIC neonatal intensive 21 care unit; one of the highest distinctions granted by the Perinatal Section of the America Academy of Pediatrics.
