Our Theater Company and community are truly alive with the ""Sound ofMime"! The excitement of this heart-warming musical family is palpable, and we welcome you to this wonderful show.

Our board of directors and its Strategic Planning Committee are again considering a change in our name and identity throughout the Capital District. We have been Schcncctady Light Opera Company for a majority of our 86-ycar history. Increasingly we are being misunderstood as an Opera Company rather than a broad based community musical theater and a Center for the Performing Arts and Education in Downtown Schenectady. We are launching a new program called the Community Benefit Program that will enable an organization or business to utilize our theatrical productions to raise funds for a non-profit organization of their choice. The objective will be to generate increased revenues for an organization, and assist us in promoting our shows in the process. For more information contact John Samatulski at 212-641-0740 or [email protected] In May of this year we will publicly announce a new community collaborative project called "Tapping into the Arts" Co-sponsored by Light Opera, Schenectady County Senior Long-Terin Care Services and the ARC of Schenectady, the project will coordinate volunteer recruitment, training and education for youth, seniors and the community-at-large, Community volunteers are more urgently needed now than ever before with the downsizing and cut backs at all levels of government, business and industry. Our Company can be justly proud of the progress we've made since our move downtown. Our three-building facility, at the heart of downtown, is providing quality musical theater to a broad cross-section of the Capital Di.strict, and our outreach in education and training in the arts continues to benefit our community. We appreciate all our supporters, season subscribers, audiences and volunteers.

Thank you for your interest and continued participation.

Tlw Sound ofMusic premiered on Broadway in 1959 and later became the most popular film of all time. It's been revived on stages across the globe, including SLOC in 1968 & 1987. Suggested by the memoirs of a von Trapp child, it recounts life in Austria during the late 1930's -just before its annexation with Nazi Germany. Today, we are aware of the tragic events that took place during World War 11. However, at the time, the world did not yet know the full magnitude of what would unfold. The story of one family's courage and loyalty has stuck wth me over the years. Having reached so many, I think we must all have memories of how this stoiy has touched our lives. As a child, I remember singing its songs with my cousin Gina. I remember the first time 1 saw it with my daughter, Gabrielle.

Those familiar with SLOC's history are aware that the building wo sit in today was once St. John the Baptist Church. My Aunt was a member of St. John's. She loved it here. It was here, 12 years ago, that my family said goodbye to her after her courageous battle with breast cancer. When I was selected to direct this production, 1 couldn't help but feel she had a hand in it. My Aunt Jo was an amazing woman, and this was her favorite musical. As a result, it holds a very special place in my heart. It's because of this that I'd like to dedicate this production to the memory of my Aunt, Josephine Formiehelli.

Having spent the last three months with this cast and crew, I'm reminded that sometimes faiiiily is not only the one you arc born into. Sometimes it's the one you create. This team has become my family. This is a production that 1 am very proud of! I'd like to thank SLOC for this opportunity, it's been an honor! Thank you to all who have supported my family these last few months. To the cast, thank you for taking this show beyond an^lhing 1 could dream it to be. To my entire production team, you're amazing! Thank you for all you've done to iielp make this show what it is. .'Vnd to you, the audience, thank you for coming. 1 hope that your glimpse into the lives of the von Ti-app Family leaves you with a renewed faith in family, love, hope, and survival - the underbing theme of The Sound ofMusic. Enjoy the show!

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is disi)atche(i to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain, Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures llie heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Caj)tain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War il provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular mo\ie musical of ail time.
