The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. Anderson led the Huskies to their first- ever NCAA playoff tournament in 2004, and his 1999 and 2004 squads both completed the season rated among the Top 10 teams in NCAA Division II rankings. “I was very happy during my tenure at Michigan Tech, but rebuilding the NMU pro- gram holds a special appeal for me as an alum and as a native of [nearby] Ishpeming,” said Anderson. “Michigan Tech was great to me, but I feel that if I was ever going to make a career change… The NMU position was one of few that would motivate me to leave Tech.” As a prep player, Anderson was a standout in football, track and wrestling at Ishpeming High School. In wrestling, he was a three-time Upper Peninsula champion who compiled a 78-5-1 record. He was also a two- time all-conference football player. As an NMU collegian, Anderson earned NCAA All-America honors as a Wildcat wrestler in the 132-pound weight division in 1976. He was 72-30-2 during his four-year career. He graduated from Northern in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary educa- tion. In 1984, he completed a master’s degree at NMU. Following his undergraduate years, Wildcat Coach Bernie Anderson has directed the team for five seasons. Anderson began a teaching career at his prep alma mater where he served as defensive coordinator for a football program that went

Physical Education Instructional Facility The PEIF, as it is more commonly called, was opened in 1976 and houses the PEIF Pool, home of NMU swimming and div- ing team, and Vandament Arena, where the Wildcat volleyball team plays. The PEIF pool features eight lanes and a diving tank with one- and three-meter springboards, as well as a 20-meter platform. Vandament Arena, opened in 1995, is a 1,500-seat volleyball-only facility, one of the finest in Division II. The facility houses an auxiliary gymnasium that the Wild- cat men’s and women’s basketball teams use for practice. The PEIF also houses a two-level Recreation Center, which was opened in December 1999. It is complete with a climbing wall, weight room, cardiovascular area, two basket- ball courts, a tennis court, two lounge areas and a conference room.
